Book excerpt: "Mel Martinez, the United States’ first Cuban-American senator, came to Florida in 1962 as part of Operation Pedro Pan. His rags-to-riches climb through county, state, and national politics has the character of a storybook saga. In this evenhanded, inspiring, and deeply satisfying biography, Richard Foglesong demonstrates that Martinez became a politician not from an ego-driven desire to exercise power and capture attention, but from a morally driven desire to return the favor for all that he and his family received from their adopted country. His personal story is here seamlessly tied to contemporary political, historical, and social forces, including the role of religion in politics, increasing Latino power, and the contemporary debate over immigration policy. From counting chads to Terri Schiavo to the confirmation of America’s first Latino Supreme Court justice, Martinez has had a role in many recent political controversies. Foglesong explores that aspect of his character, his significance to the larger Latino voting population, and the reason behind his sudden resignation from office. Drawing from Machiavelli, Foglesong describes Martinez as an "Immigrant Prince," a genuine leader who has escaped his own history and shown others the way forward. As a U.S. senator Martinez was respected in both parties for his forthrightness in addressing the problem of America’s undocumented workers and other issues affecting U.S. Latinos"--

Book excerpt: Exploring what it means to be human through the Korean diaspora, Caroline Kim’s stories feature many voices. From a teenage girl in 1980’s America, to a boy growing up in the middle of the Korean War, to an immigrant father struggling to be closer to his adult daughter, or to a suburban housewife whose equilibrium depends upon a therapy robot, each character must face their less-than-ideal circumstances and find a way to overcome them without losing themselves. Language often acts as a barrier as characters try, fail, and momentarily succeed in connecting with each other. With humor, insight, and curiosity, Kim’s wide-ranging stories explore themes of culture, communication, travel, and family. Ultimately, what unites these characters across time and distance is their longing for human connection and a search for the place—or people—that will feel like home.

Book excerpt: “In this timeless book, President Kennedy shows how the United States has always been enriched by the steady flow of men, women, and families to our shores. It is a reminder that America’s best leaders have embraced, not feared, the diversity which makes America great.” —Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright Throughout his presidency, John F. Kennedy was passionate about the issue of immigration reform. He believed that America is a nation of people who value both tradition and the exploration of new frontiers, deserving the freedom to build better lives for themselves in their adopted homeland. This 60th anniversary edition of his posthumously published, timeless work—with a foreword by Jonathan Greenblatt, the National Director and CEO of the ADL, formerly known as the Anti-Defamation League, and an introduction from Congressman Joe Kennedy III—offers President Kennedy’s inspiring words and observations on the diversity of America’s origins and the influence of immigrants on the foundation of the United States. The debate on immigration persists. Complete with updated resources on current policy, this new edition of A Nation of Immigrants emphasizes the importance of the collective thought and contributions to the prominence and success of the country.

Book excerpt: “This immigration story is universal.” —School Library Journal, Starred Dan Yaccarino’s great-grandfather arrived at Ellis Island with a small shovel and his parents’ good advice: “Work hard, but remember to enjoy life, and never forget your family.” With simple text and warm, colorful illustrations, Yaccarino recounts how the little shovel was passed down through four generations of this Italian-American family—along with the good advice. It’s a story that will have kids asking their parents and grandparents: Where did we come from? How did our family make the journey all the way to America? “A shovel is just a shovel, but in Dan Yaccarino’s hands it becomes a way to dig deep into the past and honor all those who helped make us who we are.” —Eric Rohmann, winner of the Caldecott Medal for My Friend Rabbit “All the Way to America is a charmer. Yaccarino’s heartwarming story rings clearly with truth, good cheer, and love.” —Tomie dePaola, winner of a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona

Book excerpt: Since 1965 the foreign-born population of the United States has swelled from 9.6 million or 5 percent of the population to 45 million or 14 percent in 2015. Today, about one-quarter of the U.S. population consists of immigrants or the children of immigrants. Given the sizable representation of immigrants in the U.S. population, their health is a major influence on the health of the population as a whole. On average, immigrants are healthier than native-born Americans. Yet, immigrants also are subject to the systematic marginalization and discrimination that often lead to the creation of health disparities. To explore the link between immigration and health disparities, the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity held a workshop in Oakland, California, on November 28, 2017. This summary of that workshop highlights the presentations and discussions of the workshop.

Book excerpt: Astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin commended the author citing his proposal to transform the Space Shuttle fleet, before retiring it, into a space tourism fleet, which would generate profits for NASA. Dr. Donald Brownlee Director of NASA’s “STARDUST” Mission that flew to comet “Wild 2” said this about the author: “One of Dr. Misconi most significant publications was his 1979 Nature paper on streaming of interstellar grains into the solar system. The paper predicted that interstellar dust should stream into the solar system from the direction, the then detectable interstellar gas and it also described the interaction of the extrasolar particles with the solar wind and the IP (Interplanetary) magnetic field. The paper was timely and highly prophetic as the stream of interstellar dust was detected just a few years later by instruments on the Ulysses and Galeleo spacecraft.” Dr. Seung Soo Hong, former chair of the Astronomy Department at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea, said this about the author: “I still remember in one of those brain storming sessions he suggested to fire a “big gun” from a satellite to a nearby asteroid and to observe the scattered light of the Sun and man-made source by the dust excavated from the asteroid surface. The Space Astronomy Laboratory team couldn’t materialize the idea then. But to think back, this was a brilliant idea, with which one can characterize the nature of ligorith particles for a reasonable price”.
