Download or read book Godsends written by William Desmond and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godsends is William Desmond’s newest addition to his masterwork on the borderlines between philosophy and theology. For many years, William Desmond has been patiently constructing a philosophical project—replete with its own terminology, idiom, grammar, dialectic, and its metaxological transformation—in an attempt to reopen certain boundaries: between metaphysics and phenomenology, between philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, between the apocalyptic and the speculative, and between religious passion and systematic reasoning. In Godsends, Desmond’s newest addition to his ambitious masterwork, he presents an original reflection on what he calls the “companioning” of philosophy and religion. Throughout the book, he follows an itinerary that has something of an Augustinian likeness: from the exterior to the interior, from the inferior to the superior. The stations along the way include a grappling with the default atheism prevalent in contemporary intellectual culture; an exploration of the middle space, the metaxu between the finite and the infinite; a dwelling with solitudes as thresholds between selving and the sacred; a meditation on idiot wisdom and transcendence in an East-West perspective; an exploration of the different stresses in the mysticisms of Aurobindo and the Arnhem Mystical Sermons; a dream monologue of autonomy, a suite of Kantian and post-Kantian variations on the story of the prodigal son; a meditation on the beatitudes as exceeding virtue, in light of Aquinas’s understanding; and culminating in an exploration of Godsends as telling us something significant about the surprise of revelation in word, idea, and story. Godsends is written for thoughtful persons and scholars perplexed about the place of religion in our time and hopeful for some illuminating companionship from relevant philosophers. It will also interest students of philosophy and religion, especially philosophical theology and philosophical metaphysics.

Book Synopsis People to Be Loved by : Preston Sprinkle
Download or read book People to Be Loved written by Preston Sprinkle and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians who are confused by the homosexuality debate raging in the US are looking for resources that are based solidly on a deep study of what Scripture says about the issue. In People to Be Loved, Preston Sprinkle challenges those on all sides of the debate to consider what the Bible says and how we should approach the topic of homosexuality in light of it. In a manner that appeals to a scholarly and lay-audience alike, Preston takes on difficult questions such as how should the church treat people struggling with same-sex attraction? Is same-sex attraction a product of biological or societal factors or both? How should the church think about larger cultural issues, such as gay marriage, gay pride, and whether intolerance over LGBT amounts to racism? How (or if) Christians should do business with LGBT persons and supportive companies? Simply saying that the Bible condemns homosexuality is not accurate, nor is it enough to end the debate. Those holding a traditional view still struggle to reconcile the Bible’s prohibition of same-sex attraction with the message of radical, unconditional grace. This book meets that need.
Book Synopsis Divine Freedom and the Doctrine of the Immanent Trinity by : Paul D. Molnar
Download or read book Divine Freedom and the Doctrine of the Immanent Trinity written by Paul D. Molnar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine Freedom and the Doctrine of the Immanent Trinity is widely acclaimed by scholars in the field of Christian systematic theology. Molnar's quest to place the doctrine of the immanent Trinity on the agenda of the Christian doctrine of God has proven to be a signal contribution to the debate in contemporary Christian theology. The material in this second edition has been thoroughly updated: it contains a new preface and a new introduction, as well as a revised bibliography. The book includes a brand new chapter titled 'Divine Freedom Revisited' which addresses those questions that have arisen in connection with Molnar's original presentation of the divine freedom. Molnar re-visits here his discussion of the Logos Asarkos, the theologies of Karl Rahner and Wolfhart Pannenberg. He sheds new light on Rahner's and Torrance's discussions of the Resurrection; and incorporates modern discussions by contemporary theologians to offer new insights into Eberhard Jüngel's thinking.

This book was released on 2005-11-21 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Molnar analyzes and compares Karl Barth's view of the relationship between the immanent and economic Trinity with the views of many contemporary theologians. He holds that while God is and remains incomprehensible even in his revelation, he can be knownas a very definite object in faith and by grace. Here is the true mystery of the triune God. God is not an object we can control but he is still Emmanuel, God with us. A sound doctrine of the immanent Trinity recognizes the freedom of God as the basis ofour own human freedom and upholds God's distinction from his creation, thus avoiding the theological pitfalls of agnosticism, monism and dualism."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis The Image of the Immanent Trinity by : Fred R. Sanders
Download or read book The Image of the Immanent Trinity written by Fred R. Sanders and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the economic Trinity is the immanent Trinity , as Karl Rahner said, then what difference does it make for how we read the Bible? This book takes up the discussion that has dominated the last several decades of Trinitarian theology - that of Rahner's Rule - and brings it into dialogue with the longer history of the doctrine, particularly with the history of interpretation of scripture. The history of Trinitarianism is the history of complex interpretive moves, a long conversation in which the Christian church has sought to learn how to ask the right questions of scripture. Surveying recent theological projects and learning from their successes and failures, The Image of the Immanent Trinity argues that the eternally perfect fellowship of Father, Son, and Spirit is truly present for our salvation in Christ who, as the image of the invisible God, secures God's presence in the economy of salvation as the image of the immanent Trinity.
Book Synopsis Philosophy of Revelation by : Herman Bavinck
Download or read book Philosophy of Revelation written by Herman Bavinck and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2018 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck (1854-1921) is widely celebrated as one of the top theologians in the Reformed tradition, and through the ongoing labor of translation teams, editors, and publishers, his vast writings are being offered anew to English-only readers. This book brings the groundbreaking framework of Bavinck's "organic motif" to the fore in one of Bavinck's most influential works. In the best sense of the title, the modern, yet orthodox Bavinck offers readers here both a philosophy of revelation and a philosophy of revelation. Philosophy of Revelation was originally presented by Bavinck at the Stone Lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1908, that by itself deserves being published. This classic text is updated and annotated and may function as a supreme entry into the mind of Bavinck. Bavinck saw theology as the task of "thinking God's thoughts after him and tracing their unity." This project can be seen as "thinking Bavinck's thoughts after him and tracing their unity." Chapters include: - The Idea of a Philosophy of Revelation - Revelation and Philosophy - Revelation and Nature - Revelation and History - Revelation and Religion - Revelation and Christianity - Revelation and Religious Experience - Revelation and Culture - Revelation and the Future Author Bio Cory Brock is the assistant Pastor at First Presbyterian in Jackson, Mississippi. Cory holds a PhD in Systematic Theology from the University of Edinburgh. Editor currently resides in Jackson, Mississippi. Nathaniel Gray Sutanto (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is an elder and theologian at Covenant City Church (Jakarta, Indonesia), and an adjunct lecturer at Westminster Theological Seminary (PA). His recent writings have appeared in the Harvard Theological Review and the Scottish Journal of Theology. Editor currently resides in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Book Synopsis Alain Badiou and the Book of Revelation by : Bruce Worthington
Download or read book Alain Badiou and the Book of Revelation written by Bruce Worthington and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using many key philosophical concepts based on the work of Alain Badiou, this book outlines the relationship between an event and the emergence of a “truth,” which serves as a helpful organizing principle from which to study the origins of Christianity. Alain Badiou and the Book of Revelation argues that despite what postmodern philosophy says, truths still appear, and their immanent character can be known in the world through a militant subject, one who is willing to declare the consequences of an event that has happened. The second half of the book applies Badiou’s theory of the event to the book of Revelation, a book that draws out radical, even terrifying, consequences from an event “the victory of the Lamb,” particularly in the logic of a new world, and a political body that is to come. Based on several new insights following the completion of Badiou’s “The Immanence of Truths,” the book is a full-length treatment of Badiou’s philosophy to the study of Christian origins and the book of Revelation.
Book Synopsis The Enigma of Divine Revelation by : Jean-Luc Marion
Download or read book The Enigma of Divine Revelation written by Jean-Luc Marion and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the possibilities and pressures of the language of revelation on human understanding. How can we critically account for divine self-disclosure in the linguistically mediated world of human concerns? Does the structure of interpretation limit the language of revelation? Does revelation open up new horizons of critical interpretation? The volume brings together theologians who approach the interactions of revelation and hermeneutics with different perspectives, including various forms of phenomenology and comparative theology. It approaches the theme of revelation – central as it is to the theological endeavour – from several angles rather than a single methodological program. Dealing as it does with revelation and understanding, the volume addresses the foundational issues at stake in the challenges around change, identity, and faithfulness currently facing the church.
