Book excerpt: Imi Knoebel is one of the most important European representatives of non-representational art, and he has devoted a lifetime to developing it. Around 1966, his first work was influenced by Kazimir Malevich's paintings and by Joseph Beuys, who taught him.Layering, sequencing, and stacking became his trademark techniques once he discovered masonite and its potential for creating large three-dimensional work. However, Knoebel also adopted a constrasting approach by producing extremely pared-down images which have no material form, to represent the immaterial. This catalogue of the exhibition (Imi Knoebel: Kernstücke (Key Works), at Kunstmuseum Krefeld, Museum Haus Esters, 22 March - 23 August 2015) provides a concentrated review of his early years; a newly-created complex of his works provides an insight into the essence of his multi-form work.English and German text.
Download or read book Imi Knoebel written by Imi Knoebel and published by Kerber Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imi Knoebel, one of the most important contemporary abstract painters, has concentrated for over 15 years on the primary colours of blue, yellow and red; these have a similar architectural function to that of foundation stones. Based on the artist's proposal – an abstract composition of these colours – in 2008 Knoebel received a commission to design six church windows for the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Reims. These have been inaugurated in June 2011 in this high Gothic cathedral where the French kings were crowned. This opulent volume provides both a richly colourful documentation and an in-depth description of the entire project, which, following the tradition of Marc Chagall and Brigitte Simon who both designed church windows, creates a fascinating symbiosis between the old and the new.
Book Synopsis Art of the 20th Century by : Karl Ruhrberg
Download or read book Art of the 20th Century written by Karl Ruhrberg and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2000 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original edition of this ambitious reference was published in hardcover in 1998, in two oversize volumes (10x13"). This edition combines the two volumes into one; it's paperbound ("flexi-cover"--the paper has a plastic coating), smaller (8x10", and affordable for art book buyers with shallower pockets--none of whom should pass it by. The scope is encyclopedic: half the work (originally the first volume) is devoted to painting; the other half to sculpture, new media, and photography. Chapters are arranged thematically, and each page displays several examples (in color) of work under discussion. The final section, a lexicon of artists, includes a small bandw photo of each artist, as well as biographical information and details of work, writings, and exhibitions. Ruhrberg and the three other authors are veteran art historians, curators, and writers, as is editor Walther. c. Book News Inc.

Book Synopsis The Last Picture Show by : Douglas Fogle
Download or read book The Last Picture Show written by Douglas Fogle and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of works examining a range of issues: performativity and photographic practice; portraiture and cultural identity; the formal and social architectonics of the built environment; societal and individual interventions in the landscape; photography's relationship to sculpture and painting; the visual mediation of meaning in popular culture; and the poetic and conceptual investigation of visual non-sequiturs, disjunctions and humorous absurdities. Bringing together a newly commissioned body of scholarship with reprints of important historical texts, The Last Picture Show seeks to define the legacy that has produced a rich body of photographic practice in the art world today.
Download or read book Michael Landy written by Colin Wiggins and published by National Gallery London. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British artist Michael Landy (b. 1963) is known primarily as an installation artist. His work, along with others associated with the Young British Artists (YBAs), was first catapulted to the world spotlight when it was featured in the notorious Sensation exhibition (1997). His sculptural installations and performances explore political and social themes, such as the nature of consumerism and commodity. In 2009, Landy began a three-year artist residency at the National Gallery, London. He chose to focus his project on representations of saints and their accompanying stories, often gruesome, which were once part of common culture but are now largely unknown. Landy's preoccupation with recycling narratives and repurposing imagery results in Saints Alive, the subject of this book, conceived to include drawings, collages, and a series of kinetic, interactive sculptures with moving parts and sounds. Book Synopsis Remaking the Readymade by : Adina Kamien-Kazhdan
Download or read book Remaking the Readymade written by Adina Kamien-Kazhdan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replication and originality are central concepts in the artistic oeuvres of Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. Remaking the Readymade reveals the underlying and previously unexplored processes and rationales for the collaboration between Duchamp, Man Ray, and Arturo Schwarz on the replication of readymades and objects. The 1964 editioned replicas of the readymades sent shock waves through the art world. Even though the replicas undermined ideas of authorship and problematized the notion of identity and the artist, they paradoxically shared in the aura of the originals, becoming stand-ins for the readymades. Scholar-poet-dealer Arturo Schwarz played a crucial role, opening the door to joint or alternate authorship—an outstanding relationship between artist and dealer. By unearthing previously unpublished correspondence and documentary materials and combining this material with newly conducted exclusive interviews with key participants, Remaking the Readymade details heretofore unrevealed aspects of the technical processes involved in the (re)creation of iconic, long-lost Dada objects. Launched on the heels of the centenary of Duchamp’s Fountain, this new analysis intensifies and complicates our understanding of Duchamp and Man Ray’ initial conceptions, and raises questions about replication and authorship that will stimulate significant debate about the legacy of the artists, the continuing significance of their works, and the meaning of terms such as creativity, originality, and value in the formation of art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The point of departure for the present publication is the strikingly innovative artistic spirit of the Russian avant-garde, along with the "Socialist Realism" that became established after the revolution. It addresses the radical conceptions of the revolutionary artistic movements of the early 20th century and their significance for the breakthroughs to abstraction and Constructivism. It also traces the implications and the traces of "Socialist Realism" as an ideologically motivated pictorial formula up to the present day. Also investigated is the actuality and viability of revolutionary ideas and art with reference to numerous examples of both abstract and representational art. For those interested in the works and ideas of these movements, and in the artistic consequences of the October Revolution in general, this sumptuous publication offers fascinating insights and a comprehensive overview.
Book Synopsis Albert Oehlen Boxed Edition by : Klaus Kertess
Download or read book Albert Oehlen Boxed Edition written by Klaus Kertess and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited to 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist, each signed by the artist. Often wryly funny and just as smart, Albert Oehlen's paintings play the medium for all it's worth. After an early realization that the so-called death of painting actually freed his enthusiasm as to the number of aspects through which one could expand painting, Oehlen, got to work on a wide variety of figurative and non-objective offerings, in what he has called his post-non-representational art. In his most recent work group Oehlen expands painting through the use of blatant advertising posters whose in-your-face aesthetics he transforms with subtle brushwork. Never without a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor, his work seems to be winking at us as it dares us to change the way we look at an image. Klaus Kertess throws a light on the years from 1988 onwards, when Oehlen saw himself self-consciously as a painter and started his first abstract works, then continued to probe the limits of the medium.
