Download or read book Falnama written by Massumeh Farhad and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Praised by the New York Times as "a highly important exhibition book," this lavishly produced catalog reproduces illustrated texts from the groundbreaking exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Called "fabulous" by the Washington Post, Falnama was the first show of its kind dedicated to the art of divination in the Islamic world. The Falnama were brilliantly painted compositions created in Safavid Iran and Ottoman Turkey in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Falnama: The Book of Omens combines rare images with scholarly texts on the deeper meaning of dreams, omens, and divination. Featured in this first publication ever devoted to the Falnama as a genre are intact volumes as well as text folios and illustrations now dispersed among international public and private collections. Essays by scholars of Safavid, Ottoman, and Byzantine history and language, complemented by full-color illustrations, offer detailed analysis of the form, content, and meaning of these rarely seen works of art. The first-ever translations of three of the four monumental copies provide insight into a vivid and enduring aspect of human concern--the unknown."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis The Prophet's Heir by : Hassan Abbas
Download or read book The Prophet's Heir written by Hassan Abbas and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and legacy of one of Mohammad’s closest confidants and Islam’s patron saint: Ali ibn Abi Talib Ali ibn Abi Talib is arguably the single most important spiritual and intellectual authority in Islam after prophet Mohammad. Through his teachings and leadership as fourth caliph, Ali nourished Islam. But Muslims are divided on whether he was supposed to be Mohammad’s political successor—and he continues to be a polarizing figure in Islamic history. Hassan Abbas provides a nuanced, compelling portrait of this towering yet divisive figure and the origins of sectarian division within Islam. Abbas reveals how, after Mohammad, Ali assumed the spiritual mantle of Islam to spearhead the movement that the prophet had led. While Ali’s teachings about wisdom, justice, and selflessness continue to be cherished by both Shia and Sunni Muslims, his pluralist ideas have been buried under sectarian agendas and power politics. Today, Abbas argues, Ali’s legacy and message stands against that of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Taliban.
Download or read book Imam 'Ali written by Reza Shah-Kazemi and published by I.I.S. Occasional Papers. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ali ibn Abi Talib is unparalleled in Islam. He was the Prophet Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, the first Shi'i Imam and the fourth of the Rashidun Caliphs. Sunni and Shi'i Muslims alike hold 'Ali in the highest regard owing to his status as a spiritual teacher and his strength as a warrior. According to the mystical tradition of Islam, 'Ali is the embodiment of 'the perfect human being' (al-insan al-kamil). Reza Shah-Kazemi here draws on the insights of the Sufi masters Ibn 'Arabi and Rumi to look beyond the biographical details of 'Ali's life to reflect on the spiritual significance of his actions and teachings. In the spirit of ta'wil or esoteric interpretation, the author identifies how 'Ali's inner spiritual principles can be regarded as transcending the boundaries of time, space, religion and culture. For Shah-Kazemi, it is this mystical interpretation of 'Ali that invites a new, much deeper understanding of his personality and contemporary relevance, outside the confines of history. The book offers vivid examples of 'Ali's conduct and persona--on the battlefield, from the pulpit of the mosque, and in his private teachings to the mystics--exploring the ways in which his actions embodied his principles. An accessible and concise guide, this book is relevant to all those with an interest in the life of 'Ali, Islamic spirituality, religious practice, and the philosophy of religion.

Download or read book Opposing the Imam written by Nebil Husayn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam's fourth caliph, Ali, can be considered one of the most revered figures in Islamic history. His nearly universal portrayal in Muslim literature as a pious authority obscures centuries of contestation and the eventual rehabilitation of his character. In this book, Nebil Husayn examines the enduring legacy of the nawasib, early Muslims who disliked Ali and his descendants. The nawasib participated in politics and scholarly discussions on religion at least until the ninth century. However, their virtual disappearance in Muslim societies has led many to ignore their existence and the subtle ways in which their views subsequently affected Islamic historiography and theology. By surveying medieval Muslim literature across multiple genres and traditions including the Sunni, Mu'tazili, and Ibadi, Husayn reconstructs the claims and arguments of the nawasib and illuminates the methods that Sunni scholars employed to gradually rehabilitate the image of Ali from a villainous character to a righteous one.

Book Synopsis Sahifa E Sajjadiya by : Ali Ibn Hussain Zayn Al Abidin
Download or read book Sahifa E Sajjadiya written by Ali Ibn Hussain Zayn Al Abidin and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebrated collection of supplication and whispered prayers attributed to Imam Zain Al Abedin, the great grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) and son of Imam Husayn Ibn Ali (A.S). Al Sahifa Al Sajjadiyya is an example of the highest form of eloquence. According to Shia narrations, the book is said to have been composed after the Battle of Karbala (680 AD) and describes the relationship between man and God. Shia tradition considers this book with great respect, ranking it behind the Quran and Ali's Nahj al-Balagha. Sahifa-e-Sajjadiya comprises of heart touching supplications given to us as a gift from our beloved Imam Ali Ibn Al Hussain. To be honest, I would read Sahifa-e-Sajjadia rarely; only if it would be mentioned to read a particular supplication in some salat to be read on special holy days. This was mainly because of its inaccessibility as an easy read. Most books that I would find are in Arabic. English is a language most easily understood by many. Hence the thought of compiling these beautiful supplications in a commonly used, global language arose. It's amazing how when Allah decides to bless you, he will cause situations to come together in your favour. This is compilation in the form of a beautifully coloured and designed book is a humble step towards reaching out to people who can make these supplications a part of their routine read and put them to good use in their daily lives. We wish our readers a happy read! "Be thankful for the unknown blessings already on their way"

His writings and speeches, especially during his time as Caliph (656 - 661 A.D), speak volumes about his progressive political vision. A just order founded on rational thinking, tolerance and equality was his ultimate goal. Special emphasis on the need for education was another critical pillar of his philosophy. He was looking much beyond his age and hence he built the intellectual foundations of a model government for future. The emphasis was on nurturing leaders, humane and accountable, who would establish institutions and focus primarily on the wellbeing of the ordinary people. In that sense his teachings are valuable for any student of politics and government anywhere in the world.
