Book excerpt: Fans of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and The Mysterious Benedict Society will race through this exciting adventure about an orphan, his unusual friends, and the power of imagination. What if everything you imagined could become real? It all starts when Professor Eisenstone, scientist and inventor, creates a box that’s supposed to turn whatever you imagine into reality. There’s only one problem: he can’t get it to work. Until Tim shows up. An orphan with an especially keen imagination, Tim brings to life Phil, an eloquent finger monkey with a dry sense of humor. Tim and Professor Eisenstone work in secret to make the box more powerful. But when Eisenstone is kidnapped along with his contraption, Tim, Phil, and the professor’s granddaughter, Dee, must find the criminals before they use the box to turn their imagined evil into something all too real. Creating a miniature monkey is all well and good. But in order to rescue his friend, Tim will have to face his darkest fears and unleash the true potential of his own mind. “A splendid adventure, hilarious and harrowing in turn and so strongly cast that even the precocious pocket primate doesn't steal the show.” —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review "With a solid mystery, fantastic device, warm friendships, a funny monkey, and heartening conclusion, this has a heaping serving of middle-grade antics."-Booklist “The Imagination Box is children’s fiction in the classic mode, with double-crosses, deceitful adults and narrow escapes all meshing into a solid mystery plot…and a timeless be-careful-what-you-wish-for message.”—Financial Times (UK)

Book excerpt: Red beans and rice, trad jazz, and second lines are the Big Easy's calling cards, but beyond where the carriage rides take you is a city brimming with genre-defying music, transnational cuisine, and pockets of wild, artistic locals that challenge preconceived notions of what it means to be New Orleans. With a respectful nod to the traditional and a full embrace of the obscure, New Orleans: The Underground Guide is a resource for discovering the city as it really is -- as much brass bands and boas as it is bounce and bicycle tours. From a speakeasy in the Bywater neighborhood to the delightfully sketchy vibe of St. Roch Tavern, lead author Michael Patrick Welch uncovers an unexpected tableau of musicians, venues, and novel ways to pass the bon temps. Contents include but are not limited to: where to get naked, how to make the most of Mardi Gras according to banjo player Geoff Douville, what to order from the delicious Slavic menu at Siberia, where to find the New Orleans Giant Puppet Festival, how to catch a performance by the New Movement comedy troupe, where to rent a kayak, and how to get in on the "bed and beverage" experience at the Royal Street Inn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When twenty-one-year-old Michael Dell asked E. Lee Walker to be the president of his fledgling computer company, PC’s Limited, Walker, in his mid-forties, immediately thought about all the people who had helped him through life—as an undergraduate at Texas A&M (class of ’63), a graduate student at Harvard, and a once-young entrepreneur himself. As he and Dell created the foundation of what would become one of the most successful companies in the world, Walker was guided by the lessons of his past business ventures, by his belief in the power of imagination, and by his relationships with people who had provided encouragement when he most needed it. When he left Dell Computer Corporation to teach, Walker discovered that the stories he took with him—of his aspirations, of his failures and triumphs, and of his friends and mentors—were the key to engaging and inspiring his students. Here, Walker records those stories in a memoir that spans five decades and reveals a man whose curiosity, resourcefulness, and luck led him out of South Texas and into corporate boardrooms, university lecture halls, and community activism. In fast-paced tales about life as a high-tech entrepreneur, adjunct professor, civic leader, and environmental advocate, Walker manages to convey the importance of creative thinking and communal effort in all his endeavors. Originally offered to a small group of college students in Italy for study abroad, this affecting memoir will introduce to a wider audience not only a seasoned executive and philanthropist but also a wise and delightful storyteller.

Book excerpt: It has been a joy to write this memoir as a legacy for my son Dennis and my daughter Susan and my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I have fantastic family and friends. I retired after 54 years as a public school teacher. I loved teaching eighthgraders. I feel that my students have given me more than I gave them. I have spent my years searching and growing and always trying to be a responsible person. I am living a charmed life. In my journey I have dealt with negatives such as alcoholism, divorce, death, codependency, and Alzheimer's. I am a child of an alcoholic; I married and divorced an alcoholic; I was a codependent. Alzheimer's is one of the cruelest diseases there is. The disease erased all that made my mom a unique human being. I hope my story can inspire. Sports have given me much pleasure. I love football, basketball, IRL racing, and NASCAR. My favorites are the Green Bay Packers, the Illini Dan Wheldon, Danica Patrick, Brett Favre, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson. Traveling has been the most invigorating experience for me as I have traveled the US and the world. It was so neat to walk the Great Wall of China. I am living a very passionate, positive, and fulfilling life. It is not my age that defines me; it is what I do with my life. With love; my name is Arcelia.
