Book Synopsis Imaginary Citizens by : Courtney Weikle-Mills
Download or read book Imaginary Citizens written by Courtney Weikle-Mills and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Ichabod Crane and other characters from children’s literature shape the ideal of American citizenship? 2015 Honor Book Award, Children's Literature Association From the colonial period to the end of the Civil War, children’s books taught young Americans how to be good citizens and gave them the freedom, autonomy, and possibility to imagine themselves as such, despite the actual limitations of the law concerning child citizenship. Imaginary Citizens argues that the origin and evolution of the concept of citizenship in the United States centrally involved struggles over the meaning and boundaries of childhood. Children were thought of as more than witnesses to American history and governance—they were representatives of “the people” in general. Early on, the parent-child relationship was used as an analogy for the relationship between England and America, and later, the president was equated to a father and the people to his children. There was a backlash, however. In order to contest the patriarchal idea that all individuals owed childlike submission to their rulers, Americans looked to new theories of human development that limited political responsibility to those with a mature ability to reason. Yet Americans also based their concept of citizenship on the idea that all people are free and accountable at every age. Courtney Weikle-Mills discusses such characters as Goody Two-Shoes, Ichabod Crane, and Tom Sawyer in terms of how they reflect these conflicting ideals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flexible Imagination: At Work in the Transnational CorporateOffices of Jakarta, Indonesia is a behind-the-scenes ethnography examining the social interactions between individuals from different cultural and national backgrounds who work together in the halls of some of the most notorious Fortune 500 corporations out of Southeast Asia. In the transnational corporate spaces of Jakarta, Indonesia, there is a frustrating struggle for coherence and meaning by expatriate and national populations still new to the morphing and “flexible” world of global capitalism. Many of those newly engaged in the machinations of our global economy struggle to make sense of their unfamiliar surroundings. In this situation, where localities and social constellations are in a state of constant flux, people rely on their imagination in the construction of a social reality that makes sense—provides enough social stability—to get through the routine activities of a typical work day. The imaginary put to use by those discussed in this book ties together bodies of knowledge—historic and current, academic and popular, economic and cultural—in an attempt to create a transnational working reality that makes sense. Thus, the term “flexible imagination” encapsulates the variable and shifting nature of these imaginary processes.

Book Synopsis Romanticism at the End of History by : Jerome Christensen
Download or read book Romanticism at the End of History written by Jerome Christensen and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2003-05-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A refreshingly new discussion of Romanticism . . . provides new insights into the connection between the lives and works of Wordsworth and Coleridge.” —Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature The Romantics lived through a turn of the century that, like our own, seemed to mark an end to history as it had long been understood. They faced accelerated change, including unprecedented state power, armies capable of mass destruction, a polyglot imperial system, and a market economy driven by speculation. In Romanticism at the End of History, Jerome Christensen challenges the prevailing belief that the Romantics were reluctant to respond to social injustice. Through provocative and searching readings of the poetry of Wordsworth; the poems, criticism, and journalism of Coleridge; the Confessions of De Quincey; and Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley, Christensen concludes that during complicated times of war and revolution English Romantic writers were forced to redefine their role as artists. “The most brilliant, comprehensive, and humanizing discussion of Romanticism I’ve encountered in a long time: criticism that unabashedly loves its subject.” —Frank McConnell, University of California, Santa Barbara “How, asks Christensen, can one resist commercialist hegemony in the posthistorical world? . . . This book bravely and passionately asserts the contemporary relevance of the utopian impulse in ‘Romantic’ writing without falling prey to its ideological posturing.” —Modern Language Review “[Christensen’s] formulation of the Romantics is fascinating, bound up with the future of poetry as well as the way in which we should think about their historical significance.” —This Year’s Work in English Studies

Book Synopsis Concentrationary Imaginaries by : Griselda Pollock
Download or read book Concentrationary Imaginaries written by Griselda Pollock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945, French political prisoners returning from the concentration camps of Germany coined the phrase 'the concentrationary universe' to describe the camps as a terrible political experiment in the destruction of the human. This book shows how the unacknowledged legacy of a totalitarian mentality has seeped into the deepest recesses of everyday popular culture. It asks if the concentrationary now infests our cultural imaginary, normalizing what was once considered horrific and exceptional by transforming into entertainment violations of human life. Drawing on the political philosophy of Hannah Arendt and the analyses of violence by Agamben, Virilio, Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy, it also offers close readings of films by Cavani and Haneke that identify and critically expose such an imaginary and, hence, contest its lingering force.
