Book excerpt: The history of law enforcement in the Lone Star State goes back well before photography, dating to Texas's days as part of the Spanish empire. After that Texas became a province of Mexico and for nearly a decade stood among the nations as an independent republic before becoming the 28th state in the Union in 1845. Beyond the contribution to law and order made by constables, sheriffs, town marshals, city police officers, and federal lawmen, Texas is the birthplace of a law enforcement institution unique in the world, the legendary Texas Rangers. Historic Photos of Texas Lawmen features close to 200 images of Texas lawmen, bad men (and a few bad women), assorted characters with a law enforcement connection like the legendary Judge Roy Bean, and shots of the places they did their work--for good or bad. Each photograph has a story to tell. Some of the images in this volume, coming from the author's personal collection, are published here for the first time. But all of the images command attention, many as attention-getting as the business end of a Texas Ranger's .45.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Byrd Williams Collection at the University of North Texas contains more than 10,000 prints and 300,000 negatives, accumulated by four generations of Texas photographers, all named Byrd Moore Williams. Beginning in the 1880s in Gainesville, the four Byrds photographed customers in their studios, urban landscapes, crime scenes, Pancho Villa’s soldiers, televangelists, and whatever aroused their unpredictable and wide-ranging curiosity. When Byrd IV sat down to choose a selection from this dizzying array, he came face to face with the nature of mortality and memory, his own and his family’s. In some cases these photos are the only evidence remaining that someone lived and breathed on this earth. The 193 photos selected here are organized into thematic sections such as “Landscapes,” “Violence and Religion,” and “Darkness.” They are significant not just for the range of subjects, but for the inclusion of a variety of examples of the evolving photographic technology from the 1880s to the present. This book is an unprecedented portrait of both photographic history and the history of Texas, as well as a record of one unique family. Roy Flukinger’s Foreword places the photographs in a historical context, and Anne Wilkes Tucker’s Afterword discusses the ethics of memory and preservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of America: Texas Gunslingers presents the concept of Texas as the Gunfighter Capital of the West. Indeed, after the cowboy--a Texas creation--the most colorful and romanticized frontier figure is the gunfighter. Nothing is more dramatic than life and death conflict, and the image of men in big hats and boots brandishing six-shooters and Winchesters has been portrayed in countless Western novels, movies, and television shows. Texas made an enormous contribution to gunfighter lore. Texas Rangers were responsible for the evolution of Sam Colt's revolving pistol, key weapon of gunfighters. More shoot-outs occurred in Texas than in any other state or territory. More gunfighters were from Texas, including kill-crazy Wes Hardin and Killin' Jim Miller, the West's premier assassin. There were more blood feuds in Texas than in any other state. Frequently, gunplay erupted in towns such as Tascosa, El Paso, Fort Worth, and Lampasas, where four lawmen were killed in an 1873 saloon battle.

This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Amberg-Weiden, language: English, abstract: I will examine three movies which certainly changed the public and common image of Texas. In my term paper I will pursue the following questions: Which different views and pictures of Texas are explained in the three films? How are these images transmitted? Which images are found in all three movies, are there different or even conflicting images in the movies? Do the different images connect with historical changes, or just with the different, artistic perspectives of the directors? What does make Texas unique amongst the fifty United States? Of course, every State has its own characteristic feature. Louisiana is known for its Cajun culture, while in Florida everybody is wearing Bermuda shorts. But almost everyone seems to have some idea about Texas. When hearing the word Texas many people are thinking of: the dry and dusty desert, the hot sun and a cloudless, blue sky, blunt and backward people, lonely cowboys with their harmonica sitting near the bonfire, the Texan slang, great oil spills, or Tex-Mex fast-food, steaks, and big cars - in the Lone Star State everything seems to be bigger. But where do these partly very vague, partly very specific and appropriate views and images of Texas come from? Of course, one cannot name perfectly the sources of a general awareness. Nevertheless, great movies do have the power to change and reshape people’s views, and this surely has happened with Texas’ image.
