Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Book excerpt: Plasma neutralization of an intense ion beam pulse is of interest for many applications, including plasma lenses, heavy ion fusion, high energy physics, etc. Comprehensive analytical, numerical, and experimental studies are underway to investigate the complex interaction of a fast ion beam with a background plasma. The positively charged ion beam attracts plasma electrons, and as a result the plasma electrons have a tendency to neutralize the beam charge and current. A suite of particle-in-cell codes has been developed to study the propagation of an ion beam pulse through the background plasma. For quasi-steady-state propagation of the ion beam pulse, an analytical theory has been developed using the assumption of long charge bunches and conservation of generalized vorticity. The analytical results agree well with the results of the numerical simulations. The visualization of the data obtained in the numerical simulations shows complex collective phenomena during beam entry into and ex it from the plasma.

Book excerpt: Plasma neutralization of an intense ion pulse is of interest for many applications, including plasma lenses, heavy ion fusion, cosmic ray propagation, etc. An analytical electron fluid model has been developed to describe the plasma response to a propagating ion beam. The model predicts very good charge neutralization during quasi-steady-state propagation, provided the beam pulse duration [tau]{sub b} is much longer than the electron plasma period 2[pi]/[omega]{sub p}, where [omega]{sub p} = (4[pi]e2n{sub p}/m)12 is the electron plasma frequency and n{sub p} is the background plasma density. In the opposite limit, the beam pulse excites large-amplitude plasma waves. If the beam density is larger than the background plasma density, the plasma waves break. Theoretical predictions are compared with the results of calculations utilizing a particle-in-cell (PIC) code. The cold electron fluid results agree well with the PIC simulations for ion beam propagation through a background plasma. The reduced fluid description derived in this paper can provide an important benchmark for numerical codes and yield scaling relations for different beam and plasma parameters. The visualization of numerical simulation data shows complex collective phenomena during beam entry and exit from the plasma.

Book excerpt: An exploratory experiment has been performed on the propagation of intense relativistic electron beams through an ionized medium. The beam was produced on the Cornell facility and consisted of a 50 kAmp stream of 350 keV electrons. The initial plasma was produced by a conical theta pinch gun located 1.5 m downstream of the diode and it is estimated that the initial electron density at beam injection was about 10(exp 13) cu cm. Beam propagation was observed photographically, on an X-ray diode at the end of the tube, and on magnetic loops along the tube. Results suggest that the bulk of the beam propagates down the tube at speeds of 1.8 x 10(exp 8) m/sec. The magnetic probe signals indicate that there is appreciable counter streaming current within the plasma volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to one of the most active domains of atomic physic- atomic physics of heavy positive ions. During the last 30 years, this terrain has attracted enormous attention from both experimentalists and theoreti cians. On the one hand, this interest is stimulated by rapid progress in the development of laboratory ion sources, storage rings, ion traps and methods for ion cooling. In many laboratories, a considerable number of complex and accurate experiments have been initiated, challenging new frontiers. Highly charged ions are used for investigations related to fundamental research and to more applied fields such as controlled nuclear fusion driven by heavy ions and its diagnostics, ion-surface interaction, physics of hollow atoms, x-ray lasers, x-ray spectroscopy, spectrometry of ions in storage rings and ion traps, biology, and medical therapy. On the other hand, the new technologies have stimulated elaborate theo retical investigations, especially in developing QED theory, relativistic many body techniques, plasma-kinetic modeling based on the Coulomb interactions of highly charged ions with photons and various atomic particles - electrons, atoms, molecules and ions. The idea of assembling this book matured while the editors were writ ing another book, X-Ray Radiation of Highly Charged Ions by H. F. Beyer, H. -J. Kluge and V. P. Shevelko (Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg 1997) covering a broad range of x-ray and other radiative phenomena central to atomic physics with heavy ions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutralization and focusing of intense charged particle beam pulses by electrons forms the basis for a wide range of applications to high energy accelerators and colliders, heavy ion fusion, and astrophysics. For example, for ballistic propagation of intense ion beam pulses, background plasma can be used to effectively neutralize the beam charge and current, so that the self-electric and self- magnetic fields do not affect the ballistic propagation of the beam. From the practical perspective of designing advanced plasma sources for beam neutralization, a robust theory should be able to predict the self-electric and self-magnetic fields during beam propagation through the background plasma. The major scaling relations for the self-electric and self-magnetic fields of intense ion charge bunches propagating through background plasma have been determined taking into account the effects of transients during beam entry into the plasma, the excitation of collective plasma waves, the effects of gas ionization, finite electron temperature, and applied solenoidal and dipole magnetic fields. Accounting for plasma production by gas ionization yields a larger self-magnetic field of the ion beam compared to the case without ionization, and a wake of current density and self-magnetic field perturbations is generated behind the beam pulse. A solenoidal magnetic field can be applied for controlling the beam propagation. Making use of theoretical models and advanced numerical simulations, it is shown that even a small applied magnetic field of about 100G can strongly affect the beam neutralization. It has also been demonstrated that in the presence of an applied magnetic field the ion beam pulse can excite large-amplitude whistler waves, thereby producing a complex structure of self-electric and self-magnetic fields. The presence of an applied solenoidal magnetic field may also cause a strong enhancement of the radial self-electric field of the beam pulse propagating through the background plasma. If controlled, this physical effect can be used for optimized beam transport over long distances.

Book excerpt: A study has been initiated to investigate interactions between an intense proton beam and a background hydrogen plasma. The magnetic and electric neutralization of the ion beam by the plasma as well as collective interactions between the beam and the plasma are objects of this study. The plasma is produced by a conical theta-pinch gun and injected into a 2 kG solenoidal guide field. Plasma densities in the neighborhood of 10(10)/cc and electron temperatures of a 1-3 eV can be produced by careful operation of the plasma gun. The plasma column is 60 cm long and 2 cm in diameter. A 20 A/sq. cm proton beam is emitted from a magnetically insulated diode at 400 keV and injected axially into the plasma column. This paper presents a description of the experiment and some initial experimental results. (jhd).

Book excerpt: Multi-dimensional electrostatic and electromagnetic particle simulations are used to investigate the nature of beam-plasma interactions and radiation generation during the injection of dense electron beams into the ionosphere from spacecraft. The nature of the injection process is determined primarily by the relative value of two characteristic time scales: the beam stagnation time t (s) and the plasma response time t(rp). When ts trp, spacecraft charging is significant and most of the beam electrons are drawn back into the spacecraft. When tstrp, vehicle charging is reduced and the beam propagates away from the source. In this latter case there is strong beam-plasma turbulence which destroys the coherence of the beam within one or two gyroperiods. The spatial distribution of the beam has the form of a hollow cylinder near the source. As the beam propagates away from the source, the cylinder becomes increasingly filled. Return currents are associated with the field-aligned flow of ambient electrons, while current closure is provided primarily by the cross-field motion of the ions. The beam-plasma interaction leads to the formation of coherent current structures. Whistler waves with a peak in the frequency range 0.5 - 0.7 omega e are produced by these structures via a coherent Cerenkov interaction. The Whistler waves propagate at angles substantially away from the resonance cone are are predominantly electromagnetic in nature.

Book excerpt: Experimental results are presented for the heating of a 4 m long plasma confined by a uniform magnetic field of 4-5 kG by an intense relativistic electron beam. The initial plasma density ranged from approximately 5 x 10 to the 13th power cu cm to approximately 3 x 10 to the 15th power cu cm, the lower density cases being partially ionized and the higher density cases highly ionized. In all cases, the energy coupled from the beam to the plasma is greater than can be explained by binary collisions between beam electrons and the plasma particles. Over most of the density range tested, 5 x 10 to the 13th power cu cm to 1.5 x 10 to the 15th power cu cm the plasma heating cannot be explained by classical processes. These results are found to be explained quantitatively by the use of a full nonlinear treatment of the electron-electron two stream instability in the kinetic regime. A review of beam plasma interaction theory and previous experiments is presented to facilitate comparison with the present results.
