Book excerpt: Late in the 15th century the discovery of the New World revealed to the Europeans the existence of peoples and cultures whose forms of artistic and intellectual expression were totally different to their own but of immense appeal. While at that time the white Conquistadores had no interest in and were perhaps incapable of appreciating and respecting this cultural heritage, for some considerable time now the so-called "pre-Columbian civilisations" have been rediscovered and archaeologists are attempting to reconstruct their marvellous cultural mosaic, the roots of which lie in an historical substrata predating the Christian era by some thousands of years. The aim of this book is to trace the development of some of the civilisations that emerged in the Mesoamerican region and gave rise to surprisingly advanced and sophisticated cities. The Olmecs, Maya, Aztecs and other less well known groups have in fact left extraordinary evidence of their passing in the form of great architectural complexes, monumental sculptures, ceramics, jewellery and surprising written records that have only recently given up their secrets. This volume also intends to underline the importance of the so-called minor cultures that have until now been unknown to the public at large but which nonetheless contributed to the economic and cultural development of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The work is characterised by a dual scientific and generalist approach to provide all readers with in-depth information - that is both stimulating and comprehensible - concerning a world that is still far from contemporary models. Concise but exhaustive captions, comprehensive iconographical references, numerous colour plates, line drawings and black and white maps complement the text and contextualise the cultural parallels and ideologies of the various civilisations in question within the chronological sequence in the most reliable and attractive manner possible.

Book Synopsis The Ancient Kingdoms of Mexico by : Nigel Davies
Download or read book The Ancient Kingdoms of Mexico written by Nigel Davies and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 1983 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This outstanding study spans four rich civilizations in ancient Mexico, from 1500 B.C. to the Spanish conquest soon after A.D.1500: The "Olmecs," hunters and farmers who worshipped the man-jaguar and became the first great carvers in stone and jade. The culture of "Teotihuacan," with its sumptuous palaces and gigantic Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. The "Toltec" dynasty, whose temples, wreathed with carvings of predatory beasts, serpents and warriors, testify to a new militaristic phase in Mexican history. The "Aztecs," fierce empire-builders whose gods demanded complex rituals and the blood of human sacrifice. Writing for students, travellers and non-specialists, Nigel Davies puts these fascinating cultures into historical context. Drawing on the latest research, he discusses their arts, beliefs and customs, and their changing economic and political conditions, to build up a vivid picture of life in the kingdoms of ancient Mexico." --provided by Goodreads.

Book excerpt: This authoritative volume has been revised throughout and expanded, with stunning new images and accounts of the major discoveries of recent years. Recent findings have been added to expand our understanding of the Olmecs outside of their heartland, and new research on the legacy of the Maya offers a wider and more cohesive narrative of Mexicos history. New co-author Javier Urcid has added greater coverage of Oaxaca and of Monté Alban, one of the earliest cities in Mesoamerica and the center of the Zapotec civilization, and a fully revised Epilogue discusses the survival of indigenous populations in Mexico from the Conquest up to the present. This longstanding classic now features full-colour photos of the vibrant art and architecture of ancient Mesoamerica throughout.
Book Synopsis Ancient Mexico in the British Museum by : British Museum
Download or read book Ancient Mexico in the British Museum written by British Museum and published by British Museum Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of independent civilization in Mesoamerica can be traced back at least 3000 years. A rich and varied geography helped shape an extraordinarily diverse array of cultures on the Gulf coast and in the Maya lowlands and the Mexican highlands. Based on the Mexican collections of the British Museum, this illustrated title introduces the prehispanic art of Mesoamerica. Among the masterpieces illustrated are Olmec ceremonial jade objects, Maya lintels, and Aztec turquoise mosaics. Not only is there remarkable continuity within the distinctive regional cultures, there is also evidence for widely-shared beliefs in powerful nature gods and for practices such as the Mesoamerica ball game. This book points to the most important of these connections and to recent advances in our understanding of a complex and largely unwritten story.
