Book Synopsis Greek Slave Systems in their Eastern Mediterranean Context, c.800-146 BC by : David M. Lewis
Download or read book Greek Slave Systems in their Eastern Mediterranean Context, c.800-146 BC written by David M. Lewis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orthodox view of slavery in the ancient Mediterranean holds that Greece and Rome were its only 'genuine slave societies', that is, societies in which slave labour contributed significantly to the economy and underpinned the wealth of elites. Other societies, traditionally labelled 'societies with slaves', are thought to have made little use of slave labour and therefore have been largely ignored in recent scholarship. This volume presents a radically different view of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean world, showing that elite exploitation of slave labour in Greece and the Near East shared some fundamental similarities, although the degree of elite dependence on slaves varied from region to region. Whilst slavery was indeed particularly highly developed in Greece and Rome, it was also economically entrenched in Carthage, and played a not insignificant role in the affairs of elites in Israel, Assyria, Babylonia, and Persia. The differing degrees to which Eastern Mediterranean elites exploited slave labour represents the outcome of a complex interplay between cultural, economic, political, geographical, and demographic factors. Proceeding on a regional basis, this book tracks the ways in which local conditions shaped a wide variety of Greek and Near Eastern slave systems, and how the legal architecture of slavery in individual regions was altered and adapted to accommodate these needs. The result is a nuanced exploration of the economic underpinnings of Greek elite culture that sets its reliance on slavery within a broader historical context and sheds light on the complex circumstances from which it emerged.
Book Synopsis The Making of the Ancient Greek Economy by : Alain Bresson
Download or read book The Making of the Ancient Greek Economy written by Alain Bresson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary account of the ancient Greek economy This comprehensive introduction to the ancient Greek economy revolutionizes our understanding of the subject and its possibilities. Alain Bresson is one of the world's leading authorities in the field, and he is helping to redefine it. Here he combines a thorough knowledge of ancient sources with innovative new approaches grounded in recent economic historiography to provide a detailed picture of the Greek economy between the last century of the Archaic Age and the closing of the Hellenistic period. Focusing on the city-state, which he sees as the most important economic institution in the Greek world, Bresson addresses all of the city-states rather than only Athens. An expanded and updated English edition of an acclaimed work originally published in French, the book offers a groundbreaking new theoretical framework for studying the economy of ancient Greece; presents a masterful survey and analysis of the most important economic institutions, resources, and other factors; and addresses some major historiographical debates. Among the many topics covered are climate, demography, transportation, agricultural production, market institutions, money and credit, taxes, exchange, long-distance trade, and economic growth. The result is an unparalleled demonstration that, unlike just a generation ago, it is possible today to study the ancient Greek economy as an economy and not merely as a secondary aspect of social or political history. This is essential reading for students, historians of antiquity, and economic historians of all periods.
Book Synopsis Among Women by : Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz
Download or read book Among Women written by Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's and men's worlds were largely separate in ancient Mediterranean societies, and, in consequence, many women's deepest personal relationships were with other women. Yet relatively little scholarly or popular attention has focused on women's relationships in antiquity, in contrast to recent interest in the relationships between men in ancient Greece and Rome. The essays in this book seek to close this gap by exploring a wide variety of textual and archaeological evidence for women's homosocial and homoerotic relationships from prehistoric Greece to fifth-century CE Egypt. Drawing on developments in feminist theory, gay and lesbian studies, and queer theory, as well as traditional textual and art historical methods, the contributors to this volume examine representations of women's lives with other women, their friendships, and sexual subjectivity. They present new interpretations of the evidence offered by the literary works of Sappho, Ovid, and Lucian; Bronze Age frescoes and Greek vase painting, funerary reliefs, and other artistic representations; and Egyptian legal documents.
Book Synopsis Shoes, Slippers, and Sandals by : Sadie Pickup
Download or read book Shoes, Slippers, and Sandals written by Sadie Pickup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume groups research on the significance of ancient feet and footwear, much of which was presented, discussed and reviewed at the conference: Shoes, Slippers and Sandals: Feet and Footwear in Antiquity, held at Newcastle University and the Great North Museum from 29 June–1 July 2015. Ancient dress and adornment have received significant consideration in recent scholarship, though, strikingly, feet and footwear have featured relatively little in this discussion. This volume aims to rectify this imbalance through its fifteen chapters covering a wide range of aspects associated with feet and footwear in classical antiquity. Contributions are grouped under four headings: ‘Envisaging footwear’, ‘Following footprints’, ‘One from a pair’ and ‘Between representation and reality’, reflecting the broad range and interdisciplinary nature of the approaches undertaken.

Book Synopsis The Cauldron of Ariantas by : Pia Guldager Bilde
Download or read book The Cauldron of Ariantas written by Pia Guldager Bilde and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, 23 scholars from Ukraine, France, Great Britain, Russia, and Denmark celebrate the 70th birthday of the archaeologist, A.N. Sceglov. Sceglov is one of the pioneers in the investigation and history of ancient Crimea, as well as a widely recognized authority in the studies of northern Black Sea antiquities. The Tarchankut expedition established by Sceglov in 1959 explored a number of sites of the remote chora of Tauric Chersonesos. Panskoe I ranks among the most prominent of them, and Sceglov has devoted more than 30 years of his life to this unique and exceptionally well-preserved Greek settlement. The contributions to this publication shed new light on a vast range of Black Sea issues: from the earliest settlements and their functions to the formation of a Russian science of classical antiquities. In focus are the important Greek cities Histira, Olbia, Chersonesos, and Herakleia Pontike, the cities' material culture and their relationship to their own rural territory and to their non-Greek neighbors. Until now most research in this area has been conducted solely by Russians and published in Russian, but now the rest of the world is able to get a glimpse of the Black Sea area during antiquity. Pia Guldager Bilde is the director of the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Black Sea Studies, in Aarhus. Jakob Munk Hte and Vladimir F. Stolba are both researchers at the same center.
