Download or read book Imagen y Palabra written by Eliezer Oyola and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Art of Law by : Stefan Huygebaert
Download or read book The Art of Law written by Stefan Huygebaert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume were written by historians, legal historians and art historians, each using his or her own methods and sources, but all concentrating on topics from the broad subject of historical legal iconography. How have the concepts of law and justice been represented in (public) art from the Late Middle Ages onwards? Justices and rulers had their courtrooms, but also churches, decorated with inspiring images. At first, the religious influence was enormous, but starting with the Early Modern Era, new symbols and allegories began appearing. Throughout history, art has been used to legitimise the act of judging, but artists have also satirised the law and the lawyers; architects and artisans have engaged in juridical and judicial projects and, in some criminal cases, convicts have even been sentenced to produce works of art. The book illustrates and contextualises the various interactions between law and justice on the one hand, and their artistic representations in paintings, statues, drawings, tapestries, prints and books on the other.
Book Synopsis La desilusión de la imagen by : Víctor Silva Echeto
Download or read book La desilusión de la imagen written by Víctor Silva Echeto and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2016-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. JENARO TALENS (escritor).

Book Synopsis Law and violence by : Christoph Menke
Download or read book Law and violence written by Christoph Menke and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christoph Menke is a third-generation Frankfurt School theorist, and widely acknowledged as one of the most interesting philosophers in Germany today. His lead essay focuses on the fundamental question for legal and political philosophy: the relationship between law and violence. The first part of the essay shows why and in what precise sense the law is irreducibly violent; the second part establishes the possibility of the law becoming self-reflectively aware of its own violence. The volume contains responses by María del Rosario Acosta López, Daniel Loick, Alessandro Ferrara, Ben Morgan, Andreas Fischer-Lescano and Alexander García Düttmann. It concludes with Menke's reply to his critics.
Book Synopsis Enciclopedia Akal de Emblemas Españoles Ilustrados by : Antonio Bernat Vistarini
Download or read book Enciclopedia Akal de Emblemas Españoles Ilustrados written by Antonio Bernat Vistarini and published by Ediciones AKAL. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis New Mexico's Moses by : Ramón A. Gutiérrez
Download or read book New Mexico's Moses written by Ramón A. Gutiérrez and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In New Mexico's Moses, Ramón A. Gutiérrez dives deeply into Reies López Tijerina's religious formation during the 1940s and 1950s, illustrating how his Pentecostal foundation remained an integral part of his psyche even as he migrated toward social-movement politics. An Assemblies of God evangelist turned Pentecostal itinerant preacher, Tijerina used his secularized apocalyptic theology to inspire the dispossessed heirs of Spanish and Mexican land grants fighting to recuperate ancestral lands throughout northern New Mexico and the Southwest. Using Tijerina's collected sermons, Gutiérrez demonstrates the ways in which biblical prophecy influenced Tijerina throughout his life from his early days as a preacher to his leadership of the Alianza Federal de Mercedes. Tijerina sought justice for those who had lost their lands and was determined to eradicate the most egregious forms of racism and to valorize the language and culture of mexicanos. Translated into English for the first time here, Tijerina's sermons serve as a blueprint for the religious origins of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement.

Download or read book Images at War written by Serge Gruzinski and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV“If colonial America was the melting pot of modernity, it was because it was also a fabulous laboratory of images. . . . Just as much as speech and writing, the image can be a vehicle for all sorts of power and resistance.” So writes Serge Gruzinski in the introduction to Images at War, his striking reinterpretation of the Spanish colonization of Mexico. Concentrating on the political meaning of the baroque image and its function within a multicultural society, Gruzinski compares its ubiquity in Mexico to our modern fascination with images and their meaning. Although the baroque image played a decisive role in many arenas, especially that of conquest and New World colonization, its powerful resonance in the sphere of religion is a focal point of Gruzinski’s study. In his analysis of how images conveyed meaning across linguistic barriers, he uncovers recurring themes of false images, less-than-perfect replicas, the uprooting of peoples and cultural memories, and the violence of iconoclastic destruction. He shows how various ethnic groups—Indians, blacks, Europeans—left their distinct marks on images of colonialism and religion, coopting them into expressions of identity or instruments of rebellion. As Gruzinski’s story unfolds, he tells of Aztec idols, the cult of the Virgin of Guadalupe, conquistadors, Franciscans, and neoclassical attempts to repress the baroque. In the final chapter he discusses the political and religious implications of contemporary imagery—such as that in Mexican soap operas—and speculates about the future of images in Latin America. Originally written in French, this work makes available to an English audience a seminal study of Mexico and the role of the image in the New World. /div

Book Synopsis Royal Divine Coronation Iconography in the Medieval Euro-Mediterranean Area by : Mirko Vagnoni
Download or read book Royal Divine Coronation Iconography in the Medieval Euro-Mediterranean Area written by Mirko Vagnoni and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, historians and art historians have created an active historiographical debate about one of the most fascinating and studied iconographic themes of the Middle Ages: the royal divine coronation. Indeed, in the specific case of some Ottonian and Salian illuminations, it has been proposed that their function was not only political or to legitimize power, as traditionally suggested (Herrscherbilder), but also liturgical and religious (Memorialbilder). This has led to a complete rethinking of the meaning of this iconographic theme: the divine coronation of the king would not symbolically allude to his earthly power but to the wholly devotional hope of receiving the crown of eternal life in the afterlife. If this academic debate has been concentrated, above all, on Ottonian and Salian royal images, this Special Issue of Arts would like to deal with this topic by stimulating the analysis of royal divine coronation and blessing scenes in religious and liturgical context (mosaics, frescos, or paintings placed in cathedrals or monastic churches and illuminations of liturgical texts) with a wider geographical and temporal setting; that is, the European and Mediterranean kingdoms in the period from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
