Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison was made of two methods of displaying reference maps for the use of image interpreters in a tactical image interpretation facility (TIIF). Image interpreters were required to perform two tasks -- to match imagery to a reference map and then to estimate the coordinates of a point on the image. Time taken to reach correct solutions was compared when reference maps were displayed from simulated slide chips (map sections projected onto a fixed screen) and when hard-copy map chips (standard presentation) were used. Measures of performance with both display modes were obtained under experimental conditions where the image would appear on one or two chips. Two conditions of imagery orientation for each map display mode were also imposed: one in which position of the imagery was fixed and one in which the imagery could be freely oriented to the map display. Separate analyses of variance were conducted on time scores from the matching and locating tasks. The following major conclusions were derived: (1) Display of map information upon a screen instead of by hard copy increased time taken by an interpreter to match imagery and to determine map coordinates of an object on an image; the longer time required when the interpreters used map chips was attributable to need to study two slides when the imaged area lay on the boundary of one or both chips. (2) Freedom to orient an image relative to a map display did not affect time taken to complete either the matching or the locating task. (Author).

Book excerpt: The model, the task analysis results, and a survey of equipment for reference displays were all used to evaluate design alternatives for indexing, storage forms, storage media, and displays, as well as requirements and displays for auxiliary data. Three modes of TIIF operation-manual, semi-automated, and automated-were considered. Reference storage forms, media, and displays should be selected in the context of a manual or automated TIIF system. For a manual system, references should be in their original form and stored in file cabinets. For an automated system, references should be standardized according to interpreter needs and controlled by a computer processing unit. Reference indexes should be designed for each type of reference, utilizing existing indexes as far as possible. Collection and processing of auxiliary information should be automated for ease of subsequent processing. The code matrix block should be used whenever possible. The displays of auxiliary information should relate to whether the system is manual or automated. For the manual system, auxiliary displays should be viewed in hard copy or in the original format. For the automated system, displays, if needed, should be under computer control. Additional information for a code matrix block should include aircraft stabilization data. (Author).

Book excerpt: Under ongoing research objectives of the COMPONENT INTEGRATION Task, the present exploratory study was conducted to determine if the use of team consensus feedback leads to improvement of individual interpreter performance. Fifty-four relatively inexperienced enlisted interpreters (recent USAIS graduates) were subjects in the experiment. Pre-treatment and post-treatment tests were given to evaluate individual performance, and a practice phase was provided in which various types of feedback were introduced. Six experimental proficiency maintenance methods were used--three were based on consensus feedback and two on precise feedback (identifications made by experts); and one (control) simulated normal everyday operations with no feedback. Performance was evaluated in terms of amount of gain in target detection and identification scores. Results were in the expected direction; namely, there was greater overall improvement in performance of individuals working in teams with consensus feedback than in performance of individuals working alone with no feedback. Average gain in proficiency was greater under consensus feedback methods in which interpreters checked teammates' reports after each of three stereo pairs than after interpretation of all three stereo pairs. The precise feedback methods, which require ground truth as basis for feedback, resulted in the greatest average gain in interpreter proficiency. Differences among the experimental methods were attributable to improvement in target identification rather than to improvement in target detection. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite using them every day, most software engineers know little about how programming languages are designed and implemented. For many, their only experience with that corner of computer science was a terrifying "compilers" class that they suffered through in undergrad and tried to blot from their memory as soon as they had scribbled their last NFA to DFA conversion on the final exam. That fearsome reputation belies a field that is rich with useful techniques and not so difficult as some of its practitioners might have you believe. A better understanding of how programming languages are built will make you a stronger software engineer and teach you concepts and data structures you'll use the rest of your coding days. You might even have fun. This book teaches you everything you need to know to implement a full-featured, efficient scripting language. You'll learn both high-level concepts around parsing and semantics and gritty details like bytecode representation and garbage collection. Your brain will light up with new ideas, and your hands will get dirty and calloused. Starting from main(), you will build a language that features rich syntax, dynamic typing, garbage collection, lexical scope, first-class functions, closures, classes, and inheritance. All packed into a few thousand lines of clean, fast code that you thoroughly understand because you wrote each one yourself.

Book excerpt: Under monitorship of the MAN-COMPUTER FUNCTIONS Task, personnel of the System Development Corporation and the U.S. Army Behavioral Science Research Laboratory jointly conducted a study to evaluate three computer-compatible methods of identifying the image interpretation reference keys most pertinent to a given identification problem. Thirty-two enlisted image interpreters having training experience with imagery showing foreign terrain and targets were subjects for the study. Simulated computer procedures were devised in which the interpreters selected target signatures appearing on checklists as a means of designating the target category and finally the key or keys desired. Results of the experiment showed: (1) Target identification by means of a reference key was as fast and as accurate with computer-compatible procedures of key selection as with the manual procedure; (2) Interpreters tended to base selection of a key on only one or two signatures even when use of additional signatures would have increased probability of valid key selection; (3) Interpreters preferred viewing more than one key before final identification of a target; (4) No significant differences in speed and accuracy of identification were found under any of the procedures when using the two levels of imagery quality.

Book excerpt: "The second edition of Image Interpretation in Geology has been fully rewritten to take account of recent advances in geographic information systems (GIS) and digital image processing. The basic physical principles of remote sensing and how they are applied in acquiring image data from aircraft and satellites are described in detail and are then related to the relevant physiology and psychology of human vision. From here, images from different climate zones of minerals, the rocks and soils that they make up, common geological structures and geologically controlled vegetation are analysed using the basic mathematical principles of digital processing and GIS." "In particular, the second edition covers all aspects of remote sensing in geology without requiring sophisticated use of mathematics; includes a new chapter on applications; gives guidelines for the use of remote sensing and GIS; and is illustrated by a comprehensive selection of outstanding half-tones, stereoscopic and colour images." "This comprehensive text will serve the needs of intermediate and advanced geology and environmental science undergraduates on aerial photograph interpretation and remote sensing courses. It is also suitable for postgraduates and professional geologists involved in digital image processing, GIS and geological mapping."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In extracting information from aerial reconnaissance/sensor products, the image interpreter must often work with imagery of less than ideal quality. The Surveillance Systems research program of the Army Research Institute is designed to identify factors of photo quality that can help measure the interpretability of operational imagery. In the present experiment, image scale, atmospheric haze, and image motion were judged to be key factors in operational interpretability of imagery. Laboratory manipulation of representative operational images produced experimental images with controlled degradation of these three factors, separately and in combination. Image interpreters were asked to detect and identify military targets on this degraded imagery. Their scores were used to assess interpretability as a function of scale, haze, and image motion. In a parallel experiment, geometric shapes were positioned on background panels of black, white, and grey. Photographs of this array were degraded with respect to scale, haze, and image motion to the same levels as the first experimental imagery, and similar tests were conducted.
