Book excerpt: "This work proposes a Multibody Structure from Motion (MSfM) algorithm for moving object reconstruction that incorporates instance-aware semantic segmentation and multiple view geometry methods. The MSfM pipeline tracks two-dimensional object shapes on pixel level to determine object specific feature correspondences, in order to reconstruct 3D object shapes as well as 3D object motion trajectories" -- Publicaciones de Arquitectura y Arte.

Book excerpt: This book proposes a novel deep learning based detection method, focusing on vehicle detection in aerial imagery recorded in top view. The base detection framework is extended by two novel components to improve the detection accuracy by enhancing the contextual and semantical content of the employed feature representation. To reduce the inference time, a lightweight CNN architecture is proposed as base architecture and a novel module that restricts the search area is introduced.

Book excerpt: The understanding and interpretation of complex 3D environments is a key challenge of autonomous driving. Lidar sensors and their recorded point clouds are particularly interesting for this challenge since they provide accurate 3D information about the environment. This work presents a multimodal approach based on deep learning for panoptic segmentation of 3D point clouds. It builds upon and combines the three key aspects multi view architecture, temporal feature fusion, and deep sensor fusion.

Book excerpt: This work proposes a probabilistic extension to Bézier curves as a basis for effectively modeling stochastic processes with a bounded index set. The proposed stochastic process model is based on Mixture Density Networks and Bézier curves with Gaussian random variables as control points. A key advantage of this model is given by the ability to generate multi-mode predictions in a single inference step, thus avoiding the need for Monte Carlo simulation.

- Most production processes are rigid not only by way of the physical layout of machines and their integration, but also by the custom programming of the control logic for the integration of components to a production systems. Changes are time- and resource-expensive. This makes the production of small lot sizes of customized products economically challenging. This work develops solutions for the automated adaptation of production systems based on self-organisation and distributed planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the latest advances in the mathematical theory and computational tools for modeling high-dimensional data drawn from one or multiple low-dimensional subspaces (or manifolds) and potentially corrupted by noise, gross errors, or outliers. This challenging task requires the development of new algebraic, geometric, statistical, and computational methods for efficient and robust estimation and segmentation of one or multiple subspaces. The book also presents interesting real-world applications of these new methods in image processing, image and video segmentation, face recognition and clustering, and hybrid system identification etc. This book is intended to serve as a textbook for graduate students and beginning researchers in data science, machine learning, computer vision, image and signal processing, and systems theory. It contains ample illustrations, examples, and exercises and is made largely self-contained with three Appendices which survey basic concepts and principles from statistics, optimization, and algebraic-geometry used in this book. René Vidal is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Vision Dynamics and Learning Lab at The Johns Hopkins University. Yi Ma is Executive Dean and Professor at the School of Information Science and Technology at ShanghaiTech University. S. Shankar Sastry is Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Professor of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the ?nal version of the papers originally presented at the second SMILE workshop 3D Structure from Multiple Images of Large-scale Environments, which was held on 1-2 July 2000 in conjunction with the Sixth European Conference in Computer Vision at Trinity College Dublin. The subject of the workshop was the visual acquisition of models of the 3D world from images and their application to virtual and augmented reality. Over the last few years tremendous progress has been made in this area. On the one hand important new insightshavebeenobtainedresultinginmore exibilityandnewrepresentations.Onthe other hand a number of techniques have come to maturity, yielding robust algorithms delivering good results on real image data. Moreover supporting technologies – such as digital cameras, computers, disk storage, and visualization devices – have made things possible that were infeasible just a few years ago. Opening the workshop was Paul Debevec s invited presentation on image-based modeling, rendering, andlighting.Hepresentedanumberoftechniquesforusingdigital images of real scenes to create 3D models, virtual camera moves, and realistic computer animations.Theremainderoftheworkshopwasdividedintothreesessions:Computation and Algorithms, Visual Scene Representations, and Extended Environments. After each session there was a panel discussion that included all speakers. These panel discussions were organized by Bill Triggs, Marc Pollefeys, and Tomas Pajdla respectively, who introduced the topics and moderated the discussion. These discussions were of very high quality and were an integral part of the workshop.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author's phD thesis, which won the 1996 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. The author proposes and develops an artificial life paradigm for computer graphics animation by systematically constructing artificial animals controlled by self-animating autonomous agents. The animation agents emulate the realistic appearance, movement, and behavior of individual animals, as well as the patterns of social behavior evident in groups of animals. The paradigm is based on a computational model capturing the essential characteristics common to all biological creatures: biomechanics, locomotion, perception, and behavior. The approach is validated through the implementation of a virtual marine world inhabited by a variety of lifelike artificial fish, where each fish is a functional autonomous agent.
