Onur Unutulmaz. This book is the first comprehensive account of migrants from Turkey in Britain. It covers the details of demographics based on official statistics as well as offering insights into integration, identity, employment and political participation issues drawing on eight different field research carried out recently by 8 competent academics and their teams. Not all but many things you want to know about the Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot communities in the UK are covered. LITTLE TURKEY IN GREAT BRITAIN is the outcome of a collaborative writing exercise drawing upon a dozen of research projects carried out by authors independently and collaboratively from 2011 to 2015. This book is expected to be the authoritative resource for anybody interested in the contemporary Turkish and Kurdish speaking immigrant community in the UK. Rich material covers official statistics as well as a wealth of narratives built upon hundreds of face-to-face interviews carried out in London and elsewhere in Britain. From the back cover: “Turkish migration to British Isles has a long history but sizeable diaspora communities and enclaves of Turkish origin have emerged only in the last four to five decades. Earlier groups arrived were Cypriots fleeing the troubled island in the Eastern Mediterranean whilst Turks and Kurds of the mainland were not even considering the UK as a destination. This book is about these contemporary movers from Turkey, their movement trajectories, practices, and integration in Britain. Eight researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds and methodological schools came together to do the ground work for the students of this emerging subfield of human mobility studies. Turkey is now at the forefront of accommodating large scale inward mobility mostly due to the crisis in Syria and Iraq. This also brings some attention to Turkey’s own diasporic populations.” CONTENT Introduction Chapter 1. The Numbers about Turks, Kurds and Turkish Cypriots Chapter 2. Book Synopsis Enchanted Maidens by : James M. Taggart
Download or read book Enchanted Maidens written by James M. Taggart and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish villagers tell many folktales that describe in metaphorical language the struggles of young men and women as they emerge from their parental families and join in love. In this book James Taggart presents dozens of orally transmitted tales, including "Snow White," "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast," "Blancaflor," and dragonslayer stories, collected from seven villages in the region of CNBceres, and analyzes the differences in male and female approaches to telling them. His study shows how men and women use the tales to grapple with some of the contradictions found in gender relations in their culture, which conditions men to be sexually assertive and to marry virgins and which teaches women to fear the men who court them. Taggart interprets the male-female dialogue voiced through storytelling by linking the content of specific tales to the life experiences and gender of the storyteller. Men and women, he finds, carry out an exchange of ideas by retelling the same stories and altering the plots and characters to express their respective views of courtship. This indirect narrative dialogue conveys an understanding of the opposite sex and establishes a common model of marriage that permits men and women to overcome their fear of each other and bond in heterosexual love.
Book Synopsis I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie by : Pamela Des Barres
Download or read book I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie written by Pamela Des Barres and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, New York Times bestseller, I’m With The Band has been reprinted throughout the years, all over the world. This is the stylish, exuberant and sweetly innocent tale of one of the most famous groupies of the 1960s and 70s. Beginning with Pamela Des Barres’ early obsession with Elvis, her own Beatlemania madness, and her fierce determination to meet the musicians who rocked her world, I’m With The Band illuminates the glory days of scintillating encounters with musical gods including Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger and Keith Moon. A girl just wanting to have fun, Des Barres immersed herself in the drugs, danger and ecstasy of the freewheeling 1960s. As a member of The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously), an all-female group masterminded by Frank Zappa, Des Barres was in the thick of the most revolutionary renaissance in the history of modern popular music. She travelled with Led Zeppelin; lived in sin with Don Johnson; turned down a date with Elvis Presley; and was close friends with Robert Plant, Gram Parsons and Ray Davies. She had affairs with Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Waylon Jennings, Chris Hillman, Noel Redding, and Jim Morrison, among others. A woman in possession of her own destiny, Des Barres blazed a trail for women’s life-writing, standing up for female voices and experience everywhere. From original diaries, told with great warmth, chutzpah and joie de vivre, this is a frank memoir that wears its heart on its sleeve, and recalls one of rock ’n’ roll’s most thrilling eras. This edition contains new material from the author, including her response to the vitriolic shaming of groupies, and a foreword by Roisin O’Connor, rock journalist and music correspondent for the Independent.
