Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annette Gershon’s odyssey from depression-era Winnipeg to Stalinist Russia and back to Canada in the 1950s is both the seldom-told story of those who actually made that hopeful, doomed, journey, and a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit. Ten-year old Annette Gershon is content enough growing up in her father’s delicatessen on Main Street Winnipeg, but for immigrant families scratching out a living in the Dirty Thirties, even subsistence is a delicate balance, easily upset. Everything changes when her parents decide to take the family "home" to the Soviet Union to escape the devastation of the collapsing capitalist economy. Annette struggles to maintain her sense of who she is, first adapting to her life in Stalinist Odessa, then fleeing to Moscow, ahead of the Nazi occupation. But it is in the post-war years that her identity, and her very life, are threatened by the anti-Semitism of Stalinism’s final years. The Knife Sharpener's Bell is the story of a girl who tried to stop a train, but finds herself on the runaway train of historical events. It is a story about loyalty and betrayal, heroism and fear. What is most memorable about it is the empathy we feel for these characters, who must make their way through some of the twentieth century's most tumultuous events. The writing is infused with a poet's sensitivities to rhythm, image, and linguistic energy, yet it is also beautifully restrained – each image and each gorgeous observation is there for a very particular reason; the entire story hums with the tension that arises from the taut, athletic language.

They allow peer pressure, raging hormones, or other things to drive a wedge between them and the people who love them the most. On the other hand, many children and teenagers have become victims of abuse by their parents or their families. Through the early years of my life, my mother and other family members tried to destroy me as I was growing up. This is a gripping true story of abuse, hatred, rejection, and near-death experiences.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Limit by : Drucilla Cornell
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Limit written by Drucilla Cornell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Philosophy of the Limit Drucilla Cornell examines the relationship of deconstruction to questions of ethics, justice and legal interpretation. She argues that renaming deconstruction "the philosophy of the limit" will allow us to be more precise about what deconstruction actually is philosophically and hence to articulate more clearly its significance for law. Cornell's focus on the importance of the limit and the centrality of the gender hierarchy allows her to offer a view of jurisprudence different from both the critical social theory and analytic jurisprudence.

Book Synopsis Sex Working and the Bible by : Avaren Ipsen
Download or read book Sex Working and the Bible written by Avaren Ipsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible contains many stories of prostitution. Feminist and liberation readings of these biblical narratives have often made sex workers invisible. 'Sex Working and the Bible' examines stories of biblical prostitution through the experiences and understanding of sex workers today. The Bible narratives - ranging across Rahab in the Book of Joshua, the story of Solomon and the two prostitutes, the anointing women traditions, and the apocalyptic vision of the whore of Babylon in Revelation - are set within both a practical and theoretical framework. This radical book offers a new, more inclusive way of approaching issues of gender, sexuality and prostitution in the Bible.
