Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Iliad of the Iraq war" (Tim Weiner)--a gut-wrenching, beautiful memoir of the consequences of war on the psyche of a young man. Eat the Apple is a daring, twisted, and darkly hilarious story of American youth and masculinity in an age of continuous war. Matt Young joined the Marine Corps at age eighteen after a drunken night culminating in wrapping his car around a fire hydrant. The teenage wasteland he fled followed him to the training bases charged with making him a Marine. Matt survived the training and then not one, not two, but three deployments to Iraq, where the testosterone, danger, and stakes for him and his fellow grunts were dialed up a dozen decibels. With its kaleidoscopic array of literary forms, from interior dialogues to infographics to prose passages that read like poetry, Young's narrative powerfully mirrors the multifaceted nature of his experience. Visceral, ironic, self-lacerating, and ultimately redemptive, Young's story drops us unarmed into Marine Corps culture and lays bare the absurdism of 21st-century war, the manned-up vulnerability of those on the front lines, and the true, if often misguided, motivations that drove a young man to a life at war. Searing in its honesty, tender in its vulnerability, and brilliantly written, Eat the Apple is a modern war classic in the making and a powerful coming-of-age story that maps the insane geography of our times.

Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP), is designed for Marines to review and study techniques after receiving initial naming from a certified Marine Corps martial arts instructor or martial arts instructor trainer. It is not designed as a self-study or independent course. The true value of Marine Corps Martial Arts Program is enhancement to unit training. A frilly implemented program can help instill unit esprit de corps and help foster the mental, character, and physical development of the individual Marine in the unit. This publication guides individual Marines, u leaders, and martial arts instructors/instructor trainers in the proper tactics, techniques, and procedures for martial arts training. MCRP 3-02B is not intended to replace supervision by appropriate unit leaders and martial arts instruction by qualified instructors. Its role is to ensure standardized execution of tactics, techniques, and procedures throughout the Marine Corps. Although not directive, this publication is intended for use as a reference by all Marines in developing individual and unit martial arts programs. For policy on conducting martial arts training, refer to Marine Corps Order 1500.59, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP). WARNING Techniques described in this manual can cause serious injury or death. Practical application in the training of these techniques will be conducted in strict adherence with training procedures outlined in this manual as well as by conducting a thorough operational risk assessment for all training.

After a chain of events prompts Franz to murder three men, he is forced to flee from the police in Asheville to Chicago, where he soon agrees to switch places with a disgruntled marine. When his decision causes him to land in the midst of the Chinese revolution and the Japanese occupation, Franz quickly gains a reputation for his skills in hand-fighting and killing his enemies. But just as Franz becomes a decorated marine, his past catches up with him. Book excerpt: The author, a highly decorated sailor, relates the history of his thirteen-month tour of duty in wartime Vietnam in 19661967. He, embedded within the Marine Corps, tells about treating the wounded while exposed to live-fire conditions on everything from squad-size patrols to company-size missions. The author also relates how he fulfilled his responsibility for the marines health in camp; he was often the only medical person within miles. He describes the procedures for getting the wounded aboard a helicopter and transferred to a field hospital. Added to his responsibilities was caring for civilians as the United States tried to win the hearts of the Vietnamese people. He even had to treat a wounded Vietnamese who was still wearing the bandage he got from a prior skirmish with the Americans. Of equal interest to the author are the effects of battle not only on the warrior at the time but also in his life after military service. PTSD even affected this corpsman, and he suffers from itboth inpatient and outpatient experiences. Nineteen years old at the time of the war, he describes how quickly youth and social behavior are lost in combat. The author tells his story in fresh, readable prose and does not lose the reader in the actions of higher authority. He gives personal statements in a short reflection at the end of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marine Corps covered itself in glory in World War II with victories over the Japanese in hard-fought battles such as Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Iwo Jima. While these battles are well known, those who led the Marines into them have remained obscure until now. In Commanding the Pacific: Marine Corps Generals in World War II, Stephen R. Taaffe analyzes the fifteen high-level Marine generals who led the Corps' six combat divisions and two corps in the conflict. He concludes that these leaders played an indispensable and unheralded role in organizing, training, and leading their men to victory. Taaffe insists there was nothing inevitable about the Marine Corps' success in World War II. The small pre-war size of the Corps meant that its commandant had to draw his combat leaders from a small pool of officers who often lacked the education of their Army and Navy counterparts. Indeed, there were fewer than one hundred Marine officers with the necessary rank, background, character, and skills for its high-level combat assignments. Moreover, the Army and Navy froze the Marines out of high-level strategic decisions and frequently impinged on Marine prerogatives. There were no Marines in the Joint Chiefs of Staff or at the head of the Pacific War's geographic theaters, so the Marines usually had little influence over the island targets selected for them. In addition to bureaucratic obstacles, constricted geography and vicious Japanese opposition limited opportunities for Marine generals to earn the kind of renown that Army and Navy commanders achieved elsewhere. In most of its battles on small Pacific War islands, Marine generals had neither the option nor inclination to engage in sophisticated tactics, but they instead relied in direct frontal assaults that resulted in heavy casualties. Such losses against targets of often questionable strategic value sometimes called into question the Marine Corps' doctrine, mission, and the quality of its combat generals. Despite these difficulties, Marine combat commanders repeatedly overcame challenges and fulfilled their missions. Their ability to do so does credit to the Corps and demonstrates that these generals deserve more attention from historians than they have so far received.
