Book excerpt: "A must read for anyone concerned about teenage mental health." -- Maia Szalavitz, NYT bestselilng author of Unbroken Brain co-author of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog A survivor of the Troubled Teen Industry exposes the truth about the dark side of a billion-dollar industry's institutionalized abuse—and shares the story of her own fight for justice. Liz Ianelli, known around the world as Survivor993, spent years at the Family Foundation—labeled an “institution for troubled teens.” The children who went through The Family School like her were good people. They had potential and dreams, but they came out with lifelong trauma: anxious, angry, paranoid, self-hating and in pain. Most of them have suffered lives of hardship, unable to integrate back into society. Hundreds have died, mostly by overdose and suicide. I See You, Survivor is about what really happened at The Family and what continues to happen at thousands of facilities like it. Beyond the trauma, this book is about triumph, resilience, and an effort to help others, and it conveys Liz’s critical message for every survivor she sees: “You are not broken. You are not unlovable. And you are not alone. There are millions of us. And I come with a message, for you, for them, for everyone: They act strong, but we are stronger. We are worthy. We are not alone. Speak, and we will be there for you. Speak, because there is power in your testimony. Speak, and we will win.” This is a book first and foremost for survivors who can find support and community in these stories. It is also for parents, counselors, law makers and others to expose this industry for what it is: child abuse. And how that abuse has consequences for all of us.

Book excerpt: It is early 1912 when teenage newlyweds Ian and Glynnis McLean decide to immigrate from Ireland to San Francisco. Slated to depart as first-class passengers on an American-owned ship, their plans suddenly change when that voyage is canceled due to a coal strike. After the McLeans trade in their tickets for second-class accommodations aboard the Titanic, they unknowingly transform the course of their lives forever. Only one of them survives that frigid April night. In her possession is her beloved diariesthe only things she saves besides herself. In diary entries that begin in 1903, Glynnis details a childhood filled with cooking and sewing lessons, and a secret admiration for the neighbor boy, Ian. Glynnis records their journey together as Ian first rejects her advances and then eventually proposes marriage. As life leads them to step aboard the Titanic, fate intervenes, leaving Glynnis the survivor of one of the greatest tragedies ever known. But what she does not know is that when she provides testimony after the event, it is never entered into the record. Fifty years later, the truth is finally revealed through a lost deposition and excerpts from her cherished diaries. In this historical novel based on true events, a widowed survivor of the Titanic disaster reveals her history as a young girl in Ireland and how love led her onto a ship destined for tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hey, yo, Jim . . . This is Sylvester Stallone. Give me a call . . ." It was these words that would set Jim Peterik on the road to rock 'n' roll immortality. After he and his Survivor bandmates recorded "Eye of the Tiger" for the Rocky III soundtrack, the song would go on to earn a Grammy, an Oscar nomination, reach triple platinum status—and become one of the most recognizable tunes in music history. But there's much more to the story of Survivor and its founding member, Jim Peterik, than meets the eye. As one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, Peterik has cowritten songs with some of the most famous bands and artists of our time, including 38 Special ("Caught Up in You," "Hold on Loosely"), Sammy Hagar ("Heavy Metal"), The Beach Boys, The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, and many more. Now, for the first time, Peterik is sharing his stories. Filled with tales from Peterik's life in rock 'n' roll, Through the Eye of the Tiger documents his early days of success with The Ides of March ("Vehicle"), through the often torturous power struggles within Survivor, and the giddy highs that accompany a trail of worldwide hits. From going to a party in Led Zeppelin's hotel room (and turning right back out the door) to escorting a disoriented Janis Joplin back to her hotel room after opening her show in Calgary, Peterik's accounts will surprise and delight. Through the Eye of the Tiger is more than just a memoir of a songwriting legend; it's a classic rock 'n' roll story told through the eyes of someone who has lived through it all—and through the Eye of the Tiger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist and Jezebel staff writer Kylie Cheung exposes the insidious--and often unseen--connections among domestic abuse, state-based violence, political disenfranchisement, and the carceral state. "An astonishingly original, powerfully honest vision for true survivor justice." —Kirkus, starred review For readers of The Revolution Starts at Home, Feminism for the 99%, and Good and Mad. Incisive, urgent, and written exactly for our post-Roe times, Survivor Injustice is the feminist frame-changing read we need now--for each of us, and for all that’s at stake. With an abolitionist lens, journalist and Jezebel staff writer Kylie Cheung shows how domestic abuse and state violence are systemic and interconnected. She shatters the harmful and convenient narrative that abuse is a “private matter” perpetrated by individual bad actors--and situates popular understandings of domestic abuse in an indictment of the racism, misogyny, and carcerality baked into U.S. culture and politics. Cheung explores: The links between capitalism and domestic abuse: how late-stage capitalism colludes with the state to incentivize forced birth and reproductive coercion Intimate partner violence as a tool of political silence and social control America’s tacit acceptance of sexual assault, from the home to the White House The interplay of race, power, gender, and sexuality in state-based violence How the United States runs on carcerality, and what that means for victims The way we view survival crimes, and our complicity in defining which acts are “violent” and whose actions are “criminal” How white feminism and carceral feminism fail us all Cheung plainly names all that goes unsaid when we, as a culture, talk about abuse: How state and society criminalize women, girls, and gender-oppressed people of color. That what happens behind closed doors affects whose voices we hear at the ballot box. What it means when we put predators--from every party--up for vote. That sex workers are more likely to be victimized by law enforcement than “saved” by them. That this is all by design. And that ultimately--with organizing, abolition, and beyond-the-ballot action--we can change it all for good.

Here's the hitch to get you to buy my semi-autobiographical book. My book is in two parts. "Episode I," the fun game, contains short entertaining and serious stories and poems. Because of the controversial subject matter, the shortness of my book, and the little-known fact that I'm not famous you go through unique "Episode I" hunting for hidden movie and song titles. There are approximately 775 movie, television, and documentary programs. Then there are the 341 songs, and an added "downright fun," to the game, by using 31 clues you go through finding an Oscar nominated actor for the Sherlock in all of us. Play on your smartphone, computer, or tablet at airports, coffee houses, appointments, and basically anywhere you have to wait. Play with family and friends to see who can find the most titles. Who is the actor? You'd be surprised. A lot of fun for the trivia and entertainment sleuth. Are you entertainment savvy enough to play the game? Just to let you know titles, names, short phrases, expressions, and ideas are not protected by copyright laws. "Episode II," the second part, is the more serious part. "Communication in a non-confrontational manner promotes learning." This sentence is in my book. Communication, what is it? How can I get information to you in a non-confrontational manner that concern you and me? "Episode II," is a memoir containing journal entries, emails, and letters coping with a possible situation that could have ended in a mass shooting, the ups and downs of mental illness, postpartum depression, suicide, and my air traffic control experiences. All topics of conversation in today's society. My book is a collectible and the only one of its kind in the world. A little something extra-I have included some of my favorite easy recipes. Enjoy.

The result was this book - a collection of true short stories, and rants and raves, that led to his emotional instability. Read it with caution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Friedman was robbed of his adolescence by the monstrous evil that annihilated millions of European Jews and changed forever the lives of those who survived. When the Nazis overran their home town near the Polish-Ukrainian border, the Friedman family was saved by Ukrainian Christians who had worked at their farm. Henry, his mother, his younger brother, and a young schoolteacher—who had been hired by his father when Jews were forbidden to attend school—were hidden in a loft over the animal stalls at a neighbor’s farm; his father hid in another hayloft half a mile away. When the family was liberated by the Russians after eighteen months in hiding, Henry, at age fifteen, was emaciated and too weak to walk. The Friedmans eventually made their way to a displaced persons camp in Austria where Henry learned quickly to wheel and deal, seducing women of various ages and nationalities and mastering the intricacies of dealing in the black market. In I’m No Hero, he confronts with unblinking honesty the pain, the shame, and the bizarre comedy of his passage to adulthood. The family came to Seattle in 1949, where Henry Friedman has made his home ever since. In 1988 he returned with his wife to Brody and Suchowola, where he succeeded in finding Julia Symchuk, who, as a young girl, had warned his father that the Gestapo was looking for him, and whose family had hidden the Friedmans in their loft. The following year he was able to bring Julia to Seattle for a triumphal visit, where she was honored in many ways, although, as Friedman writes, “in her own country she had never been honored with anything except hard work.” Like many other survivors, Henry Friedman has found it difficult to confront his past. Like others, too, he has felt the obligation to bear witness. Now retired, he devotes much of his time to telling his story, which he believes is a message of hope, to thousands of schoolchildren throughout the Pacific Northwest. He has received national recognition for his role in establishing the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and as a founder of the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center.

Book excerpt: Cherie White shares her own story of what were the worst six years of her life, during which she was relentlessly bullied after moving to a small Tennessee town. She describes the heartache, loneliness and despair she felt as a victim of school bullying and how her cries for help went ignored. She is brutally honest about how she viewed her bullies and the bystanders who watched but did nothing to help. She is also candid about how she too became a bully and the torment she inflicted on her own victims, whom she herself viewed as inferior, as a means to preserve what little self-esteem she had left and feel better about herself. Finally, she tells of how she was able to escape her tormentors by changing schools, make several new friends out of her new classmates, and go from victim to victor! "From Victim to Victor" is a story of survival, trial, heartache, self-discovery, reflection, growth and the eventual escape and triumph.

The death of millionaire businessman Charles Parsons seems like a straightforward suicide. There's no sign of forced entry or struggle in his lavish New Jersey mansion - just a single gunshot wound from his own weapon. But days later, a different story emerges. Computer techs pick up a voice recording that incriminates Parsons' adoptive daughter, Ann, who duly confesses and pleads guilty. After the case is brought to her attention by an unlikely source, Erin McCabe and her law partner, Duane Swisher, soon realise that pieces of Ann's story don't fit together. Ann clearly knows more than she\'s willing to share, even if it means a life sentence. Who is she protecting, and why? As their investigation deepens, Erin and Swish find themselves caught in a web of human exploitation, unchecked greed, and murder - before learning the horrifying truth...
