Book excerpt: The Big Bang isn't just a theory. I felt it the moment I laid eyes on her. Her ruby red lips and lush curves called to me on a primal level, and I instantly knew I would do anything for her to be mine. And then she walked into my College AP Chemistry class and introduced herself as the teacher. Never one to back down from a challenge, I decide to get creative. Looks like I’m going to need some extra tutoring after class. Now it's just a waiting game on how long it will take to get her out from behind the desk and into my bed.

Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But the closer Alex and Brittany get to each other the more they realise that sometimes appearances can be deceptive and that you have to look beneath the surface to discover the truth. 'Compelling and addictive… I've still got that "wow" feeling you get after reading a great book' Wondrousreads.com 'Perfect Chemistry is a novel to obsess about. It is a book that you should drop everything for...the most romantic love story that I have ever read.' Raised in different environments both had suffered tragic losses. Their compatibility was untested, but the chemistry between them was electric from the first moment they met. “Catherine Hunter?” Her name, whispered so close she could feel the breath of the speaker. Startled, she spun around and found herself caught in his arms. The scent of his cologne invaded her nostrils as she looked up at him warily. With a gentle smile, he introduced himself, “Gabe Faraday. Welcome to Casper, Catherine.” The Cougar had never thought of the kitchen as a play area until Cat showed him how. Bending to put dishes in the washer, wriggling back against him, and stretching to reach the top shelves to reveal skin that invited kissing. Then there were her unfettered breasts brushing against him each time they passed. Then tragedy again strikes. The lOVEchemistry is tested, with love and emotions being stretched further than the thousands of miles the separate their homes and families.

Book excerpt: When I started this, I was sitting quietly in my private room--my man cave, if you will. I was thinking about my life event that brought me to this place in my life. I had just finished the last of my chemo preventive treatments for lymphoma. Two years of it. Before that, a year of chemo and radiation. That was a huge part of my life. My thoughts led me to write down a story or memoir of my experiences that happened in the military and what I thought I contracted the cancer from. I did this as therapy for my mind and soul. Life was starting to become unbearable, and I needed to vent. As I began to write, I drifted into a fantasy world. I've always been fascinated with comic books and imagining worlds. I always wanted to discover new characters, something different. But what? It's like the old saying "Nothing new under the sun." Speed, strength, flight, etc. While I was writing about myself, the strangest thing started happening: it was like my mind exploded with imaginary thoughts! I felt like I was being pulled into an imaginary world. I was so lost I couldn't keep up with my thoughts! I had to stop for a moment; whoa, whoa! This is too much to compute! The words started to scramble like they all wanted to be next. I told myself, "One word at a time." I'm getting confused! I was pulled into a strange place that kept recurring where I left off from my last thought. The characters I created were different from the usual and any similarities and their own distinct ways of taking action. I've enjoyed these stories and hope you do as well as those I shared them with. I'm working on new stories as I speak. Maybe create new characters. Who knows? The mind is a complicated thing. 70 70

Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders is a book that has no real predecessor in the dissociative disorders field. It reports the most recent scientific findings and conceptualizations about dissociation; defines and establishes the boundaries of current knowledge in the dissociative disorders field; identifies and carefully articulates the field’s current points of confusion, gaps in knowledge, and conjectures; clarifies the different aspects and implications of dissociation; and sets forth a research agenda for the next decade. In many respects, Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders both defines and redefines the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was the directive of President Clinton's 1993 military policy regarding gay and lesbian soldiers. This official silence continued a collective amnesia about the patriotic service and courageous sacrifices of homosexual troops. Ask and Tell recovers these lost voices, offering a rich chronicle of the history of gay and lesbian service in the U.S. military from World War II to the Iraq War. Drawing on more than 50 interviews with gay and lesbian veterans, Steve Estes charts the evolution of policy toward homosexuals in the military over the past 65 years, uncovering the ways that silence about sexuality and military service has affected the identities of gay veterans. These veteran voices--harrowing, heroic, and on the record--reveal the extraordinary stories of ordinary Americans, men and women who simply did their duty and served their country in the face of homophobia, prejudice, and enemy fire. Far from undermining national security, unit cohesion, or troop morale, Estes demonstrates, these veterans strengthened the U.S. military in times of war and peace. He also examines challenges to the ban on homosexual service, placing them in the context of the wider movement for gay rights and gay liberation. Ask and Tell is an important compilation of unheard voices, offering Americans a new understanding of the value of all the men and women who serve and protect them.

Book excerpt: The five heartbreaking and radiant stories in John Fulton's The Animal Girl explore the awkwardness of situations in which grief and erotic love collide. Here are people in extremis, struggling mightily, and often failing, to keep it together. In the Pushcart Prize--winning "Hunters," Fulton contrasts the humorous clumsiness of dating with the grim realities of death in the tale of a middle-aged woman who keeps her cancer a secret when she starts a relationship with an avid hunter. In the novella-length title story, a lonely adolescent girl deals with the recent loss of her mother and the alien presence of her father's new girlfriend by taking out her aggression on her boss and on the animals she cares for in her summer job at a research laboratory. The final story in the collection, "The Sleeping Woman," delves into the inner life of Evelyn, a divorced professional woman who falls in love with Russell, a man whose wife is permanently brain damaged and has been unresponsive for years. The ghostly presence of Russell's wife haunts Evelyn as she discovers how her lover has been scarred by his misfortune and searches for ways they might build a long-term relationship in the wake of personal tragedy. These powerful stories approach the often sentimentalized subject of romance with tenderness and insight into the heart-worn perspective of characters who have failed at love in the past. In lucid, revelatory prose, Fulton navigates the complexity of both mid-life courtship and adolescent rage with humor and intelligence.

Book excerpt: Charming and vividly evocative... I feel as if I have got to know these islands, and almost to have been there.' Helena Drysdale, author of Strangerland Ah, to be an embryo again. Christopher Vanier's story begins where we all do, conception. Set in 1940s and 1950s on the Caribbean island of St Kitts and beset by a troubled colonial legacy, both Christopher and his island yearn for independence. Vanier recalls the mischief of an island childhood: giving his baby brother to an ungrateful monkey, sneaking out to the cinema after school hours, hair-raising jaunts on a volcano, disastrous experiments involving a rocket... Is this boy lost in the plain sailing of childhood or can he turn his curiosity into Caribbean Chemistry? This is a story of self-discovery, told candidly in language rich enough to eat: Breadfruit, breadnut, bamboo, lignum vitae, marouba, weedee, and calabash. Funny and engaging, a story about breaking the barriers of identity and finding them again. A rare view of the emigrant's tale.

Born on Mars to Ag farmer parents, she was adopted as a baby by a high-ranking Royal family after her parents were killed. As an “Ag,” by rights Molly should have exceptional skill with plants, so the fact that she instead has a “brown thumb” is a big source of embarrassment. Because she’s not truly Royal, she also has none of the prestige that goes with that group, except for that of being appointed official Handmaid to Sovereign Emileia, leader of all Martian people on Mars and Earth. Though holding such a position is a great honor for a lowly Ag, now that she and Emileia, better known as M, are back on Earth, there is little for Molly to do in that capacity. That is, until a new boy shows up at Jewel High. Tristan, another Royal, is absurdly handsome but also totally obnoxious—and seems to have made it his mission in life to steal M, the Sovereign, away from her bonded soulmate, Rigel. So now Molly’s mission as Handmaid is to keep Tristan as far away from M as possible—even if that means spending way more time in his company than she’d like. As expected, that kind of familiarity breeds contempt, on both sides. At first, anyway… The much-anticipated continuation of the electrifying Starstruck series, where teen romance blends with science fiction to open a whole new world of action, adventure and discovery!
