Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History for Young People Although the number of works on Natural History might deter any new writer from venturing on so extensively handled a subject, there is at present no work of a really popular character in which accuracy of information and system atic arrangement are united with brevity and simplicity of treatment. All the best-known popular works on Natural History are liable to many obice tions, among which may be named a want of correct classification, the absence of explanations of the meanings and derivations of scientific words, the strange inaccuracy of many of the accompanying illustrations, and of the accounts of many animals. Nor do the conventional anecdotes chronicled in their pages evince that personal experience of the animal race which alone can repress romance and prevent inaccuracy. These deficiencies, it is hoped, are at all events partly sup plied in the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated Natural History Some Reptiles inhabit the dry and burning deserts; but the generality of these creatures are semi-aquatic in their habits, are fitted by their structure for progression on land or in water, and are able to pass a considerable time below the surface without requiring to breathe. This capacity is mostly the result of the manner in which the circulation and aeration of their blood is effected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hughes's Illustrated Anecdotal Natural History Without some means, however, of preserving the chisel-like sharpness of these teeth, the mere replace ment of wasted substance would be of little use. In order to obtain the desired result, the teeth are con structed after a very singular fashion. The body of the tooth is composed of pure ivory, coated on the outer surface with a thin layer of enamel, which being of a very much harder nature, is not worn away with the same rapidity. Besides this, the ivory nearest the enamel is harder than the rest, and the softer parts being easiest worn down, the edge of the tooth always keeps the same proportions, the actual cutting being performed with the edge Of the enamel. Our carpenter's Chisels are constructed on exactly the same principle, the chief portion of them being composed Of soft iron, while a very thin plate of steel is laid along the back and forms the cutting edge of the tool. So much for the characteristics of the rodents as a whole. Now for those of that group which are known as squirrels. Book excerpt: A significant expansion of the critically acclaimed first edition, Classics Illustrated: A Cultural History, 2d ed., carries the story of the Kanter family's series of comics-style adaptations of literary masterpieces from 1941 into the 21st century. This book features additional material on the 70-year history of Classics Illustrated and the careers and contributions of such artists as Alex A. Blum, Lou Cameron, George Evans, Henry C. Kiefer, Gray Morrow, Rudolph Palais, and Louis Zansky. New chapters cover the recent Jack Lake and Papercutz revivals of the series, the evolution of Classics collecting, and the unsung role of William Kanter in advancing the fortunes of his father Albert's worldwide enterprise. Enhancing the lively account of the growth of "the World's Finest Juvenile Publication" are new interviews and correspondence with editor Helene Lecar, publicist Eleanor Lidofsky, artist Mort Knstler, and the founder's grandson John "Buzz" Kanter. Detailed appendices provide artist attributions, issue contents and, for the principal Classics Illustrated-related series, a listing of each printing identified by month, year, and highest reorder number. New U.S., Canadian and British series have been added. More than 300 illustrations--most of them new to this edition--include photographs of artists and production staff, comic-book covers and interiors, and a substantial number of original cover paintings and line drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History: Birds The fuller and more technical description of the Birds runs as follows. They are vertebrate animals, but do not suckle their young, nourishing them in most instances with food which has been partially macerated in their own digestive organs, and which they are able to disgorge at will, after a manner somewhat similar to that of the ruminating quadrupeds. The young are not produced in an actively animated state, but inclosed in the egg, from which they do not emerge until they have been warmed into independent life by the effects of constant warmth. Generally, the eggs are hatched by means of the natural warmth which proceeds from the mother bird but in some instances, such as that of the tallegalla of Australia, the eggs are placed in a vast heap of dead leaves and grass, and developed by means of the heat which is exhaled from decaying vegetable substances, and which is generated to such an extent that in some cases, such as a wet haystack, it actually sets the seething mass on fire. Urged by alike instinct, our common English snake deposits its eggs in secret spots, such as dunghills and hotbeds, and there leaves them to be hatched by the constantly generated warmth. An analogous process has long been in vogue among the Egyptians for the hatching of young poultry by artificial heat, and has been, in comparatively recent years, introduced into this country. When the egg is first produced, the future chicken is merely indicated by a little germ-spot, barely the size of a single oat-grain, and does not attain the power of breathing atmospheric air, and receiving nourishment into its mouth, until a period of many days has elapsed. To watch the gradual development of the young chick is a most interesting experiment, and one which is full of suggestive instruction. There is but little difficulty in the matter, even in the very earliest stages of incubation, for the structure of the egg is so wonderfully balanced, that in order to view the little germ-spot it is only necessary to lay the egg on its side and remove a portion of the shell, when the germ will be seen lying immediately under the aperture. In whatever way an egg may be turned, the germ-spot invariably presents itself at the highest point, provided only that the egg be laid on its side, and that the living principle has not been extinguished, for life, however undeveloped, seems always to aspire. As the chick increases in size, the manipulation becomes easier, but it is always better to immerse the egg in water or other transparent liquid before removing the shell, and to keep it submerged during examination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Partridge Natural History Books on Natural History cover such a vast number of subjects that their writers necessarily find it impossible to deal with each in a really comprehensive manner and it is not within the scope of such works exhaustively to discuss the animals described, in the light of objects of sport. Books on sport, again, seldom treat at length of the Natural History of the furred and feathered creatures which are shot or otherwise taken and, so far as the Editor is aware, in no book hitherto published on Natural History or Sport has information been given as to the best methods of turning the contents of the bag to account. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History With Anecdotes: Illustrating the Nature, Habits, Manners and Customs of Animals, Birds, Fishes, Reptiles, Insects, Etc Illustrations are like windows to the house of knowledge. They let light in upon the understanding and they facilitate the outlook upon truth and beauty. To illustrate is to help one sense by the use of another, to reason by analogy and to teach the unknown by the known. When definition fails, illustration often carries conviction, and the most successful teachers are those who make the best use of sound and telling illustrations. How many lessons would have been wholly forgotten by us, but for the illustrations which made their meanings clear and left their truths for ever in our minds? The book of nature is full of illustrations which help the understanding of the book of life, and no illustrations are more valuable and fascinating, whether as revelations of the order and habits of nature herself, or as parallels and parables, full of suggestive application to the social and moral life of humanity, than those afforded by the study of Natural History.
