Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new history of over 5,000 years of African art reveals its true diversity for the first time. Challenging centuries of misconceptions that have obscured the sophisticated nature of African art, Garlake focuses on seven key regions--southern Africa, Nubia, Aksum, the Niger River, West Africa, Great Zimbabwe, and the East African coast--treating each in detail and setting them in their social and historical context. Garlake is long familiar with and has extensive practical experience of both the archaeology and the art history of Africa. Using the latest research and archaeological findings, he offers exciting new insights into the works native to these areas, and he also puts forth new interpretations of several key cultures and monuments. Acknowledging the universal allure of the African art object, this stunning book helps us to understand more about the ways in which this art was produced, used, and received.

Book excerpt: Over the course of forty years, Oscar Norwich accumulated the world's greatest private collection of African maps. This catalog comprises a record of foreign knowledge of the continent from the "Age of Exploration" to modern times, and demonstrates how the rest of the world was quick to learn the shape of the African continent but slow to grasp the realities of its interior. From the fabulous creatures depicted on early maps to the blank "regions unknown" of later ones, from those that depicted the kingdom of the legendary Prester John to maps as late as the 19th century that still featured the imaginary Mountains of Kong, this collection documents a long and troubled history of developing knowledge of the continent. Each map is illustrated and carefully described, including bibliographical citations. Originally published in 1983, the book has been revised and edited by Jeffrey Stone for this second edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWII history examines Nazi air force operations in Egypt and Libya with more than 100 rare wartime photographs. When Mussolini’s army was defeated on the Libyan-Egyptian border at the beginning of 1941, Adolph Hitler had no choice but to send reinforcements to help his ally. The Luftwaffe deployed an air detachment, first to Sicily, then to North Africa. This volume examines the small expeditionary force, solely devoted to protecting Italian possessions in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern theater. When General Erwin Rommel launched his Afrika Korps to the east, the Luftwaffe had to go on the offensive to cover the advance. As British air forces were strengthened, German High Command was obliged to send more aerial units into what it had initially considered a peripheral arena of the war. Losses in bombers and fighters were high on both sides. By the time the Allies landed in Morocco and Algeria at the end of 1942, the Wehrmacht’s fate was sealed. The last German units capitulated in Tunisia in May 1943.
