Book excerpt: A.D. 3596 While Xathen are of many body-forms, they are all Xathen, one and united. However, a billion years ago the Xathen fought each other in the bloodiest civil war the galaxy has ever seen. Trillions died and hundreds of star systems were extinguished as battles raged all across the Milky Way. They fought not over race or body-form, but over a single ideal: Thou Shalt Not Interfere. The losers fled the galaxy entirely, cast out into the great dark between the stars. The winners were left to play as gods with the Orion Spur, fostering one cluster of new intelligences after another, wiping them out, then starting again. We are the result of their toils. Now those who had fled have returned. They call themselves the True Xathen.

Book excerpt: A.D. 3487 Taylor Neeran, Star-Killer. That’s what she was being called throughout the Xathen dominion. Turn the minor star of the Franath binary system into a black hole, and they gave her that title. She was famous, infamous, whatever. It’s not like it was a handful of stars, one star wasn’t that many, the galaxy has billions of them. But sometimes it was the smallest of actions that got the most attention. One star to save a hundred unsuspecting worlds and a trillion lives, in some ways it was more than a fair trade. It wasn’t her fault the minor sun had failed to complete its transformation into a black hole. Instead, it had become a neutron star, a pulsar, spraying death across the Franath system. Franath was now spoken in whispers or not at all, as if the word itself was cursed. But she was going to fix it. In order to save eight billion souls, Taylor Neeran, Star-Killer and Spirit-Mother of Aeden was going to tame a star. Or die trying. Of course, not actually die, that would help nobody. But she was going to try really, really hard…

What, she asks, could possibly go wrong? Troubled Destiny begins just three months into Elaine ́s tour, and it seems Rachel, her sixteen-year-old daughter, has a different agenda. This becomes but one challenge for Elaine, however, when the torso of an American she recently met with floats to the surface of the Bosporus, leaving her with an uncertain danger and no clue as to why. So far, she can cope; but when Ryan, a young airman stationed in Istanbul, unveils his love for her, Elaine is plunged into a cauldron of desire and doubt that has her at wit ́s end. So far, she can manage; but when Paddy, a man she knew briefly before leaving for Turkey, arrives on the coast of the Black Sea, coping and managing are no longer an option. Elaine now enters into a tortuous period where she must face her own worst fears and decide who, if anyone, can share the love she holds.

Does heterogeneity - clude a stable democracy? Throughout history, ethnic, linguistic, or religious homogeneity whether by circumstance, coercion, or choice, has seemingly been conducive to democracy. In France, democracy was established after the impo- tion of religious uniformity and the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The United States pulled in immigrants who renounced their original affiliations to forge a new identity in a newly born state. Still, defying assumptions, democracies have emerged in heterogeneous states such as the Swiss Confederation, the Successor States of the Holy Roman Empire and, later, those carved out of the previous colonial empires. One common feature is the failure of – often violent – attempts to enforce homogeneity, or the lack of any such attempt in the first place. In the course of time, these divided societies have learned to live in diversity, to pacify their differences, and to find a path - wards peace or at least accommodation. In sum, they went beyond forms of se- rating powers to sharing power. Whether defined by ethnicity, language, religion, or even ideology, communities agreed to a pact on participating in a joint gove- ment based on proportional or even equal representation. It is noteworthy that political systems based on power-sharing were long marg- al in mainstream political science which laid an emphasis on democratic tran- tions in homogeneous societies and on socio-economic or cultural prerequisites that facilitate the rise of democracy.

Unsustainable farming practices often result in habitat loss, inefficient use of water, soil degradation, pollution, genetic erosion, among other negative impacts on human life, including hunger, low food quality, reduced access to food resources, as well as the abandonment of rural areas. Nevertheless, when agriculture is practiced in a sustainable way, it can contribute to the preservation of many habitats, to the protection of watersheds, to the preservation and improvement of soil health. The use of sustainable and ecological practices is the key feature distinguishing traditional agriculture from intensive one. It may not provide very high yields, but ensures sustainable harvests over time, thanks to time-tested technologies and traditional know-hows and also represent examples of adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. Based on this approach, in 2002, FAO launched the concept of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Programme, to identify and safeguard agricultural systems that are ensuring food and livelihood security, while maintaining magnificent landscapes, agricultural biodiversity, traditional knowledge, cultural and social values. This book presents 18 examples of these traditional agriculture systems around the world, with a special focus on Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America, as a result of the “GIAHS Building Capacity” project co-funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and carried out by the Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry (DAGRI) of the University of Florence (Italy).

Book excerpt: The greatness of a nation is less a function of its physical geography than it is of the quality of its human content. Any nation can rise to great heights if it has within its borders men and women who will dare to dream and see a life beyond the limitations of the times in which they live. These are people who know that however dark and bleak the night may be, there’ll be light at the break of dawn, and are willing both to persevere through the long, dark night and to help others do so. These men and women are those the world knows as patriots. In Dreams of a Patriot, Oluneye Oluwole confronts the monstrous subject of leadership crisis in Nigeria, not from the boring and tedious perspective of a political analyst, but from the refreshing, everyday angle of a common citizen who knows that a nation so great and so immensely endowed as Nigeria deserves more from her people. She lights a candle in the wind of our turbulent national experience and beckons on all who share in this dream of greatness to help shield its flickering flame from the extinguishing forces that have held her nation down all these years. In a subtle, unobtrusive way, it is an expression of the dreams and hopes of that pained and distressed patriot in every one of us.

Book excerpt: The first time she opens her eyes, Eve gazes on One whose beauty nearly blinds her, whose breath is in her lungs. Her Creator takes her hand and gives her to one like her and yet different. Together, she and Adam experience pure joy as they explore Eden. But her favorite moments are when the Creator comes to walk with them, day after day. Until everything changes. With one act of disobedience, Eve finds that her world is no longer a friendly place. With remorse in her heart, she must face the unknown future--the births, the deaths, the sacrifices, the loss of the one home she has ever known. Perhaps worst of all is the loss of trust, not only with her Creator but with the man who shares her life. How will they ever survive out of Eden? Bestselling biblical fiction author Jill Eileen Smith imagines the life of the first woman to ever live, unspooling a story of love, loss, and the promise of redemption.

Book excerpt: A.D. 3485 When it comes to First Contact, there are no second chances. Taylor went along for the ride to help her mother survey a new planet, and the offer of a few extra course credits for doing field work certainly didn’t hurt. A planet on the edge of disputed territory, sure, but the war with the Xathen had ended thirty years ago, and the Commonwealth had won. It didn’t matter that the first survey ship failed to return, things like that happened during wartime. But this was just term break, with two whole months to work alongside her mother and get to know her better while she sharpened her Xenobiology skills in a verdant paradise. With any luck, she would graduate early. But Taylor messed up, big time. Now she was lost, alone and struggling to survive, stranded ten thousand light-years from home.
