The crises recurrently challenging the global travel and tourism environment, including climate change, bushfires, extreme weather disasters, pandemics, and the financial crisis, show the weaknesses of neoliberal approaches and the collective economic dependency of countries on tourism that is vulnerable, if not completely unsustainable. This vulnerability asks for understanding that the collective future depends on developing entirely new approaches and interpretation of tourism to effectively respond to the human, societal, social, and climate challenges. This book offers a novel and original perspective entailing the application of a humanistic management approach to sustainable tourism, which is centered on the value of human life, the protection of human dignity and the promotion of well-being. Multiple theoretical approaches, methods, and practical cases, on an international scale, shed light on shared value creation and human dignity as a necessary condition for its achievement in different contexts. Per questo, essi richiedono un’attività di governo, la cui struttura, seppure specifica, può ricavare dall’analogia aziendale un importante contributo. Partendo da questi presupposti, obiettivo del lavoro è quello di analizzare, all’interno di una prospettiva economico-manageriale, i processi di formulazione delle strategie di offerta turistica del territorio, con enfasi particolare alla definizione delle strutture organizzative necessarie per l’azione di marketing. Lo sviluppo in chiave turistica è affrontato ponendo al centro il sistema territoriale e l’attività delle imprese operanti al suo interno: il territorio è inteso come un network di attori indipendenti, i quali, facendo riferimento alle risorse e alle competenze disponibili, propongono un’offerta di attrazioni sui mercati per attrarre volumi di visitatori coerenti con le proprie esigenze economiche, sotto-stando tuttavia al vincolo dato dalla capacità di carico che il territorio può sopportare. Un ruolo rilevante, in questo processo, è giocato dagli organi amministrativi locali, i quali, nella logica del new public management, hanno la responsabilità di promuovere e sostenere lo sviluppo locale anche attraverso la realizzazione di strutture ed infrastrutture, e la creazione di organizzazioni per la gestione dei processi di marketing.
