Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its first complete Italian printing in 1872 up to the present day, Domenico Comparetti's Vergil in the Middle Ages has been acknowledged as a masterpiece, regarded by some critics as "a true and proper history of European consciousness from antiquity to Dante." Treating Vergil's poetry as a foundation of Latin European identity, Comparetti seeks to give a complete history of the medieval conception of the preeminent poet. Scholars of the time had transformed Vergil into a sage and a seer, a type of universal philosopher--even a Christian poet and a guide of a Christian poet. In the mid-twelfth century, there surfaced legends that converted Vergil into a magician, endowing him with supernatural powers. Comparetti explores the ongoing interest in Vergil's poetry as it appeared in popular folklore and legends as well as in medieval classical scholarship. This great synthesizing work, which has been unavailable for over twenty years, is now back in print, based on E.F.M. Benecke's 1895 translation of the Italian second edition. Comparetti begins with the period in which Vergil lived and goes on to evaluate how the later images, particularly the legends, of Vergil coincide with the more scholarly accounts of his life. The result is a grand sweep of literary history from the first century B.C.E. through the end of the Middle Ages, with implications for the nineteenth century and the rise of Italian nationalism.

Book excerpt: Papers presented at the Twelfth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1995 (see also Studia Patristica 29, 31, 32 and 33). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

It binds together an eclectic mixture of genresfrom theological treatises and spiritual autobiographies to allegorical fiction and philosophical discourse. The diversity present within this collection allows for a comprehensive exploration of Christian ideals, ethics, and spiritual struggles. Among these pages, readers will find seminal works that have shaped Christian thought and influenced global literary movements, providing insights into the perennial questions of faith, good and evil, and human destiny. The contributing authors and editors, ranging from early church fathers like Saint Augustine and Gregory of Nyssa to Renaissance luminaries such as John Milton, up to modern philosophers like Friedrich Nietzsche and G.K. Chesterton, embody a wide spectrum of theological, philosophical, and cultural perspectives. This diversity reflects the anthology's commitment to displaying the rich tapestry of Christian literature, encompassing various epochs, cultures, and doctrinal viewpoints. Their collective works chart the development of Christian theology and philosophy, engage with the socio-political challenges of their times, and continue to provoke thoughtful reflection on moral and spiritual questions today. This collection is essential reading for anyone interested in the depth and diversity of Christian literary tradition. It offers readers the unique opportunity to engage with a myriad of perspectives and voices, all united by the theme of exploring the Christian faith but varied in their approaches and conclusions. Whether one approaches these works with scholarly intent, spiritual seeking, or mere curiosity about the influence of Christianity on world literature, there is much to be gleaned from the dialogue these texts provoke. '50 Christian Books' invites a journey through history, thought, and beliefa journey well worth taking for the richness of its scenery and the company of its guides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores hybridity in early modern art through two primary lenses: hybrid media and hybrid time. The varied approaches in the volume to theories of hybridity reflect the increased presence in art historical scholarship of interdisciplinary frameworks that extend art historical inquiry beyond the single time or material. The essays engage with what happens when an object is considered beyond the point of origin or as a legend of information, the implications of the juxtaposition of disparate media, how the meaning of an object alters over time, and what the conspicuous use of out-of-date styles means for the patron, artist, and/or viewer. Essays examine both canonical and lesser-known works produced by European artists in Italy, northern Europe, and colonial Peru, ca. 1400–1600. The book will be of interest to art historians, visual culture historians, and early modern historians.

Book excerpt: The international workshop held in San Miniato (October 13-16, 2004) was a step forward within a larger project devoted to the study of synod and synodality in the governance of Churches. The repraesentatio conference was an attempt to initiate a sort of dictionary of the keywords implemented (or discarded) in the history of synodical government. With an interdisciplinary approach, the workshop's proceedings provide a deep analysis of reprÃ?Â?Ã?Â]sentatio as a keyword for all collective processes of governance.
