Book excerpt: Ijiti: Reflections of a Soldier presents a gripping memoir loosely based on the life of Femi Ijiti, a young US soldier of Nigerian ancestry. His story begins in Nigeria, where he first became acquainted with guns, power, and the Nigerian military. These early impressions formed the foundation for his active and long-term career as a soldier with the US Army. An honest portrayal of the military life, Ijiti highlights the hardships he faced immigrating to a new country as a young African. He talks about the challenges of making friends when you are an outcast by default and what it was like returning home from war in Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition to exploring the many facets of life as a deployed US soldier at war, Ijiti paints a raw picture of the destructive nature of PTSD and highlights the need for increased PTSD education in the army. Ijiti also considers the need for an increased presence of African Americans and Africans in the US military. Ijiti is an honest tale of an American and Nigerian soldier with ancestral origins far different from the usual American soldier, as well as the role that ancestry played in a distinguished military career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All structures suffer from stresses and strains caused by factors such as wind loading and vibrations. Stress analysis and measurement is an integral part of the design and management of structures, and is used in a wide range of engineering areas. There are two main types of stress analyses – the first is conceptual where the structure does not yet exist and the analyst has more freedom to define geometry, materials, loads etc – generally such analysis is undertaken using numerical methods such as the finite element method. The second is where the structure (or a prototype) exists, and so some parameters are known. Others though, such as wind loading or environmental conditions will not be completely known and yet may profoundly affect the structure. These problems are generally handled by an ad hoc combination of experimental and analytical methods. This book therefore tackles one of the most common challenges facing engineers – how to solve a stress analysis problem when all of the required information is not available. Its central concern is to establish formal methods for including measurements as part of the complete analysis of such problems by presenting a new approach to the processing of experimental data and thus to experimentation itself. In addition, engineers using finite element methods will be able to extend the range of problems they can solve (and thereby the range of applications they can address) using the methods developed here. Modern Experimental Stress Analysis: Presents a comprehensive and modern reformulation of the approach to processing experimental data Offers a large collection of problems ranging from static to dynamic, linear to non-linear Covers stress analysis with the finite element method Includes a wealth of documented experimental examples Provides new ideas for researchers in computational mechanics

Book excerpt: A politician's journey to bring home Mahatma Gandhi's teachings home to South Africa in the wake of WWII In November 1949, Davidson Don Tengo (D.D.T.) Jabavu, the South African politician, Methodist lay preacher and retired professor of African languages and Latin at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape, set out on a four-month trip to attend the World Pacifist Meeting in India. The conference brought together delegates from over thirty countries to reflect on how Mahatma Gandhi’s life and teachings could inform pacifist work in the post-World War II era. Jabavu wrote an isiXhosa account of his journey up the east coast of Africa and to different parts of India which was first published in 1951 by Lovedale Press. His narrative contains wide-ranging reflections on the fauna and flora of the changing landscape, on intriguing social interactions during his travels, and on the conference itself, where he considered what lessons Gandhian principles might yield for oppressed South Africans engaged in struggles for freedom and dignity. He incorporates accounts of chance meetings with important figures of post-independence India and of the anti-colonial struggle in East Africa, as well as with members of the American civil rights movement. His commentary on non-violent resistance, and on the dangers of nationalism when coupled with militarism and racism, enriches the existing archive of intellectual and political exchange between Africa and India from a black South African perspective. This new edition includes Jabavu’s travelogue in the original isiXhosa, with an English translation by the late anthropologist Cecil Wele Manona. Tina Steiner’s introductory chapter examines the networks of international solidarity and friendship that Jabavu helped to strengthen in the course of his travels. A chapter by Mhlobo W. Jadezweni, whose updating of the original isiXhosa orthography has made Jabavu’s text accessible to new generations of readers, considers the richness of Jabavu’s isiXhosa style as a contribution to the archive of great African-language literature. Catherine Higgs provides biographical sketches of D.D.T. Jabavu and Cecil Wele Manona which situate this travelogue within the broader context of their lives. Evan M. Mwangi’s Afterword is a reflection on the historical and political significance of making African-language texts available to readers across Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your fast-track to student engagement Everywhere Smokey Daniels goes-every school he visits, every workshop he leads, every keynote he gives-there's one teaching strategy that teachers embrace above all others. That single method for transforming students from passive spectators into active learners . . . for evoking curiosity, inspiring critical thinking, and building powerful writers along the way. Now, with Elaine Daniels as Smokey's coauthor, that best-kept teaching secret is revealed to teachers at large: Written Conversations. Just what make Written Conversations so potent? An ongoing, thoughtful correspondence between students, and between students and their teachers, Written Conversations, above all else, catch and ride the wave of social interaction, which in turn makes school matter to kids. It's that simple. Structure by structure, from beginning to end, Smokey and Elaine describe four variations of these "silent writing-to-learn discussions," during which all students in a classroom think and "talk" at once in writing, instead of one at a time out loud. How Written Conversations Work 1.It all starts with mini-memos, short student letters that teachers use to introduce, extend, and assess class work. 2.Then come dialogue journals, where pairs dive deeply into academic subjects. 3.Next, groups of three or four students join in extended written discussions called write-arounds. 4.Finally, kids take their thinking online, where they enjoy digital discussions with partners from their own classroom- and with kids from around the world. . . . all the while, you are supported by detailed descriptions of each structure, lessons, and annotated student samples-making this the most practical teaching book in recent memory. What kid wouldn't want to refine written argument skills, clarify a point, or defend another's viewpoint, when the "audience" is people who matter? And Yes, Written Conversations align with the Common Core Sta
