Book excerpt: Answers to environmental issues are not black and white. Debates around policy are often among those with fundamentally different values, and the way that problems and solutions are defined plays a central role in shaping how those values are translated into policy. The Environmental Case captures the real-world complexity of creating environmental policy, and this much-anticipated Sixth Edition contains 14 carefully constructed cases, including a new study of the Salton Sea crisis. Through her analysis, Sara Rinfret continues the work of Judith Layzer and explores the background, players, contributing factors, and outcomes of each case, and gives readers insight into some of the most interesting and controversial issues in U.S. environmental policymaking.

Book Synopsis Resolution of International Water Disputes by : Permanent Court of Arbitration. International Bureau
Download or read book Resolution of International Water Disputes written by Permanent Court of Arbitration. International Bureau and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth volume in the Permanent Court of Arbitration/Peace Palace Papers series reproduces the work of the 6th International Law Seminar held at the Peace Palace on November 8, 2002. The Seminar's distinguished panelists and participants focused on the settlement of international disputes over that most essential of natural resources water. They explored a range of questions: Which settlement mechanisms are most promising in the field of transboundary freshwater disputes? Is adjudication a suitable method of apportioning water rights which are vital not only to human life, but to the agriculture and industry of every nation on the planet? Given the need for "win-win" solutions to most water disputes, are negotiation and regional cooperation the only realistic and viable methods for settling them? What is the potential role of conciliation, mediation, good offices and other ad hoc mechanisms? This volume also contains the 1997 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses, a multilateral framework treaty dealing with transboundary freshwater, which provides a variety of tools (such as the submission of disputes to fact-finding commissions) for the peaceful resolution of water disputes.

Book Synopsis The Community of Interest Approach in International Water Law by : Julie Gjørtz Howden
Download or read book The Community of Interest Approach in International Water Law written by Julie Gjørtz Howden and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Community of Interest Approach in International Water Law, Julie Gjørtz Howden identifies the normative elements of the community of interest approach (COIA) in international water law, and demonstrates how the approach can provide a legal framework for common management of international watercourses. Through analyses of various features of international watercourse cooperation and common management, the book determines the main principles and the underlying values of the COIA, and discusses how the approach contributes to the development of international water law. Although the COIA is one of the central theories of international water law, very few analytical accounts of its legal features exist. Through The Community of Interest Approach in International Water Law, Howden offers a new and fresh approach to international water law that pulls together questions of holistic management, State sovereignty, public participation and river basin organisations into the analyses of the COIA and its relevance for managing transboundary watercourses today.
Book Synopsis Doing Environmental Ethics by : Robert Traer
Download or read book Doing Environmental Ethics written by Robert Traer and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 2009-02-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Doing Environmental Ethics is a brief, accessible applied-ethics book offering an inclusive and practical way for an individual to personally address the world s ecological crisis. Author Robert Traer builds on a commonsense understanding of doing what is right and being a good person and suggests how, with a deeper sense of self and one's place in nature, we can begin to change our "carbon footprint." To consider and understand public policies and personal environmental practices, Traer draws on secular and religious perspectives, as well as Eastern and Western traditions. Doing Environmental Ethics devotes central attention to considerations of duty (to other people, species, and ecosystems), character (personal traits and virtues), relationships (to people and the natural environment) and rights (of people to participate in land-use decisions that affect them). Discussion questions at the end of each chapter help readers clarify their reasoning and create action plans for change. Doing Environmental Ethics demonstrates how valuable defining one's own philosophy about the environment is to living with greater ecological awareness and sense of personal responsibility."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Tumor-Induced Immune Suppression by : Dmitry I. Gabrilovich
Download or read book Tumor-Induced Immune Suppression written by Dmitry I. Gabrilovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tumor-Induced Immune Suppression - Prospects and Progress in Mechanisms and Therapeutic Reversal presents a comprehensive overview of large number of different mechanisms of immune dysfunction in cancer and therapeutic approaches to their correction. This includes the number of novel mechanisms that has never before been discussed in previous monographs. The last decades were characterized by substantial progress in the understanding of the role of the immune system in tumor progression. Researchers have learned how to manipulate the immune system to generate tumor specific immune response, which raises high expectations for immunotherapy to provide breakthroughs in cancer treatment. It is increasingly clear that tumor-induced abnormalities in the immune system not only hampers natural tumor immune surveillance, but also limits the effect of cancer immunotherapy. Therefore, it is critically important to understand the mechanisms of tumor-induced immune suppression to make any progress in the field and this monograph provides these important insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically explores the legal tools, concepts, principles and instruments, as well as cross-cutting issues, that comprise the field of international environmental law. Commencing with foundational elements, progressing on to discrete sub-fields, then exploring regional cooperative approaches, cross-cutting issues and finally emerging challenges for international environmental law, it features chapters by leading experts in the field of international environmental law, drawn from a range of countries in order to put forward a truly global approach to the subject. The book is split into five parts: • The foundations of international environmental law covering the principles of international environmental law, standards and voluntary commitments, sustainable development, issues of public participation and environmental rights and compliance, state responsibility, liability and dispute settlement. • The key instruments and governance arrangements across the most critical areas of international environmental law: biodiversity, wildlife, freshwater, forestry and soils, fisheries, marine pollution, chemicals and waste, air and atmospheric pollution and climate change. • Crucial developments in seven distinct regions of the world: Africa, Europe, North America, Latin America, South East Asia, the polar regions and small island states. • Cross-cutting issues and multidisciplinary developments, drawing from multiple other fields of law and beyond to address human rights and Indigenous rights, war and armed conflict, trade, financing, investment, criminology, technology and energy. • Contemporary challenges and the emerging international environmental law regimes which address these: the changing climate, forced migration, marine plastic debris and future directions in international environmental law. Containing chapters on the most critical developments in environmental law in recent years, this comprehensive and authoritative book makes for an essential reference work for students, scholars and practitioners working in the field.
Book Synopsis International Water Law and the Quest for Common Security by : Bjorn-Oliver Magsig
Download or read book International Water Law and the Quest for Common Security written by Bjorn-Oliver Magsig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s freshwater supplies are increasingly threatened by rapidly increasing demand and the impacts of global climate change, but current approaches to transboundary water management are unsustainable and may threaten future global stability and international security. The absence of law in attempts to address this issue highlights the necessity for further understanding from the legal perspective. This book provides a fresh conceptualisation of water security, developing an operational methodology for identifying the four core elements of water security which must be addressed by international law: availability; access; adaptability; and ambit. The analysis of the legal framework of transboundary freshwater management based on this contemporary understanding of water security reveals the challenges and shortcomings of the current legal regime. In order to address these shortcomings, the present mindset of prevailing rigidity and state-centrism is challenged by examining how international legal instruments could be crafted to advance a more flexible and common approach towards transboundary water interaction. The concept of considering water security as a matter of ‘regional common concern’ is introduced to help international law play a more prominent role in addressing the challenges of global water insecurity. Ways for implementing such an approach are proposed and analysed by looking at international hydropolitics in Himalayan Asia. The book analyses transboundary water interaction as a ‘case study’ for advancing public international law in order to fulfil its responsibility of promoting international peace and security.
