Book excerpt: Aquatic systems play a salient role in the complex processes of energy and matter exchange between the geosphere and the atmosphere. For example, reactions taking place in cloud water droplets can substantially alter the atmospheric budget and chemistry of trace gases; pollution induced weathering reactions at water/soil interfaces can affect the availability of nutrients and increase the concentration of potentially toxic metals in groundwaters. Moreover, the inextricable links between the water cycle, the geosphere and the atmosphere ensure that apparently localized environmental problems have increasingly impacts in other parts of the world. To identify local-to-global scale variables associated with environmental changes, a focus must be placed on the recognition of processes, rather than a continued reliance on monitoring state variables. However, in heterogeneous aquatic systems, small scale aspects of a process under observation may not be summed directly to obtain regional estimates because of process nonlinearities with change in scale. To understand this, the integrated use of measurements across a range of scales is required.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in theory and observations using passive microwave remote sensing have hightlighted the potential of spaceborne sensors for contributing to the required land surface measurements of soils, vegetation, snow cover and precipitation. Furthermore, the spatial resolution of passive microwave observations matches the special scales of large-scale models of land-atmosphere interactions both for data assimilation and validation. In order to stimulate and focus this research a workshop, sponsored by ESA and NASA, was organized to review the state-of-the-art in microwave radiometry related to land applications and to exchange ideas leading into new directions for future research. This volume contains the refereed papers from the aforementioned ESA/NASA workshop, which are arranged by topic, as well as the (edited) working group reports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing describes how remotely sensed data fields can be applied to help solve problems in ocean-related studies. This timely reference, written by and for oceanographers, emphasizes the application of data to particular physical, chemical, and biological processes related to the ocean and the ocean-atmosphere system. The organization of the book reflects this emphasis, with chapters arranged by process rather than by sensor characteristics. Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing contains comprehensive information on the application of such relevant data sets as sea surface temperature and topography, ocean circulation, sea level variability, wind speed and stress, wave height, solar radiation flux at ocean surfaces, and sea-ice characteristics and ice motion. It also discusses the reliability of remotely sensed data and provides information about the applicability of the various data sets to particular process studies. Its completeness and relevance makes Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing an important reference for modern studies of ocean and coupled ocean-atmosphere processes. Its unique coverage of the physics that govern satellite processes and their applications to oceanography ensures that it will remain an important reference as new satellites are introduced.

Book excerpt: The development of effective methodologies for the analysis of multi-temporal data is one of the most important and challenging issues that the remote sensing community will face in the next few years. The relevance and timeliness of this issue are directly related to the ever-increasing quantity of multi-temporal data provided by the numerous remote sensing satellites that orbit our planet. The synergistic use of multi-temporal remote sensing data and advanced analysis methodologies results in the possibility of solving complex problems related to the monitoring of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. This book brings together the methodological aspects of multi-temporal remote sensing image analysis, real applications and end-user requirements, presenting the state of the art in this field and contributing to the definition of common research priorities. Researchers and graduate students in the fields of remote sensing, image analysis, and environmental monitoring will appreciate the interdisciplinary approach thanks to the articles written by experts from different scientific communities.

Book excerpt: TOPEX/POSEIDON is a satellite mission that will use the technique of radar altimetry to make precise measurement of sea level with a primary goal of studying the global ocean circulation . The mission represents the culmination of the development of satellite altimetry over the past two decades. The major thrust of the mission is a commitment to measuring seal level with an unprecedented accuracy such that the small-amplitude, basinwide sea level changes that bear significant effects on global change can be detected. The mission will be conducted jointly by the United States National Aeronautics and the Space Administration and the french space agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales. The 3- to 5-year mission will study the long-term mean and variability of ocean circulation. This document provides brief descriptions of the planned investigation s as well as a summary of the major elements of the mission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 68. Human activities in the polar regions have undergone incredible changes in this century. Among these changes is the revolution that satellites have brought about in obtaining information concerning polar geophysical processes. Satellites have flown for about three decades, and the polar regions have been the subject of their routine surveillance for more than half that time. Our observations of polar regions have evolved from happenstance ship sightings and isolated harbor icing records to routine global records obtained by those satellites. Thanks to such abundant data, we now know a great deal about the ice-covered seas, which constitute about 10% of the Earth's surface. This explosion of information about sea ice has fascinated scientists for some 20 years. We are now at a point of transition in sea ice studies; we are concerned less about ice itself and more about its role in the climate system. This change in emphasis has been the prime stimulus for this book.

Book excerpt: This useful textbook/reference presents an accessible primer on the fundamentals of image texture analysis, as well as an introduction to the K-views model for extracting and classifying image textures. Divided into three parts, the book opens with a review of existing models and algorithms for image texture analysis, before delving into the details of the K-views model. The work then concludes with a discussion of popular deep learning methods for image texture analysis. Topics and features: provides self-test exercises in every chapter; describes the basics of image texture, texture features, and image texture classification and segmentation; examines a selection of widely-used methods for measuring and extracting texture features, and various algorithms for texture classification; explains the concepts of dimensionality reduction and sparse representation; discusses view-based approaches to classifying images; introduces the template for the K-views algorithm, as well as a range of variants of this algorithm; reviews several neural network models for deep machine learning, and presents a specific focus on convolutional neural networks. This introductory text on image texture analysis is ideally suitable for senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students of computer science, who will benefit from the numerous clarifying examples provided throughout the work.
