This long-running symposium series has established a reputation for providing high-quality and authoritative surveys of the state of research in this economically and politically important application area. The latest conference lives up to this reputation, and this proceedings provides a truly international snapshot of quality research into several areas of mining, mineral and metal processing (MMM) technologies. Historically, research into MMM has set the direction for other areas of automation, and this excellent collection of papers, totalling over 70, is well placed to continue in this tradition.
Book Synopsis Analysis and Evaluation of Fuzzy Systems by : Akira Ishikawa
Download or read book Analysis and Evaluation of Fuzzy Systems written by Akira Ishikawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuzzy knowledge and fuzzy systems affect our lives today as systems enter the world of commerce. Fuzzy systems are incorporated in domestic appliances (washing machine, air conditioning, microwave, telephone) and in transport systems (a pilotless helicopter has recently completed a test flight). Future applications are expected to have dramatic implications for the demand for labor, among other things. It was with such thoughts in mind that this first international survey of future applications of fuzzy logic has been undertaken. The results are likely to be predictive for a decade beyond the millenium. The predictive element is combined with a bibliography which serves as an historical anchor as well as being both extensive and extremely useful. Analysis and Evaluation of Fuzzy Systems is thus a milestone in the development of fuzzy logic and applications of three representative subsystems: Fuzzy Control, Fuzzy Pattern Recognition and Fuzzy Communications.

Book Synopsis Traffic Control and Transport Planning: by : Dusan Teodorovic
Download or read book Traffic Control and Transport Planning: written by Dusan Teodorovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When solving real-life engineering problems, linguistic information is often encountered that is frequently hard to quantify using "classical" mathematical techniques. This linguistic information represents subjective knowledge. Through the assumptions made by the analyst when forming the mathematical model, the linguistic information is often ignored. On the other hand, a wide range of traffic and transportation engineering parameters are characterized by uncertainty, subjectivity, imprecision, and ambiguity. Human operators, dispatchers, drivers, and passengers use this subjective knowledge or linguistic information on a daily basis when making decisions. Decisions about route choice, mode of transportation, most suitable departure time, or dispatching trucks are made by drivers, passengers, or dispatchers. In each case the decision maker is a human. The environment in which a human expert (human controller) makes decisions is most often complex, making it difficult to formulate a suitable mathematical model. Thus, the development of fuzzy logic systems seems justified in such situations. In certain situations we accept linguistic information much more easily than numerical information. In the same vein, we are perfectly capable of accepting approximate numerical values and making decisions based on them. In a great number of cases we use approximate numerical values exclusively. It should be emphasized that the subjective estimates of different traffic parameters differs from dispatcher to dispatcher, driver to driver, and passenger to passenger.
Book Synopsis Advanced Control and Supervision of Mineral Processing Plants by : Daniel Sbárbaro
Download or read book Advanced Control and Supervision of Mineral Processing Plants written by Daniel Sbárbaro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Control and Supervision of Mineral Processing Plants describes the use of dynamic models of mineral processing equipment in the design of control, data reconciliation and soft-sensing schemes; through examples, it illustrates tools integrating simulation and control system design for comminuting circuits and flotation columns. Coverage is given to the design of soft sensors based on either single-point measurements or more complex measurements like images. Issues concerning data reconciliation and its employment in the creation of instrument architecture and fault diagnosis are surveyed. In consideration of the widespread use of distributed control and information management systems in mineral processing, the book describes the platforms and toolkits available for implementing such systems. Applications of the techniques described in real plants are used to highlight their benefits; information for all of the examples, together with supporting MATLAB® code can be found at www.springer.com/978-1-84996-105-9.
