Symmetry is when one shape looks the same if you flip, slide, or turn it. It's in words and even letters. It's in both nature and man-made things. In fact, art, design, decoration, and architecture are full of it. This clear and concise book explains different types of symmetry and shows you how to make your own symmetrical masterpieces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wildly amusing, unconventional shape concept book, Trapezoid is here to declare that he's a shape, too. He's NOT a type of dinosaur! Shape up, shapes! Triangle is hosting auditions for all the best shapes to be in his play. Circle, Square, and Star each get a part. But Trapezoid just doesn't "fit in." Is he even a shape? The others think he sounds like a type of dinosaur. Determined to show off his usefulness, Trapezoid tries to act like the other shapes, to no avail. Eventually, though, Trapezoid celebrates his own distinct shape properties in order to become part of the performance.
Book Synopsis The Classification of Quadrilaterals by : Zalman Usiskin
Download or read book The Classification of Quadrilaterals written by Zalman Usiskin and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph reports on an analysis of a small part of the mathematics curriculum, the definitions given to quadrilaterals. This kind of research, which we call micro-curricular analysis, is often undertaken by those who create curriculum, but it is not usually done systematically and it is rarely published. Many terms in mathematics education can be found to have different definitions in mathematics books. Among these are “natural number,” “parallel lines” and “congruent triangles,” “trapezoid” and “isosceles trapezoid,” the formal definitions of the trigonometric functions and absolute value, and implicit definitions of the arithmetic operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Yet many teachers and students do not realize there is a choice of definitions for mathematical terms. And even those who realize there is a choice may not know who decides which definition of any mathematical term is better, and under what criteria. Finally, rarely are the mathematical implications of various choices discussed. As a result, many students misuse and otherwise do not understand the role of definition in mathematics. We have chosen in this monograph to examine a bit of mathematics for its definitions: the quadrilaterals. We do so because there is some disagreement in the definitions and, consequently, in the ways in which quadrilaterals are classified and relate to each other. The issues underlying these differences have engaged students, teachers, mathematics educators, and mathematicians. There have been several articles and a number of essays on the definitions and classification of quadrilaterals. But primarily we chose this specific area of definition in mathematics because it demonstrates how broad mathematical issues revolving around definitions become reflected in curricular materials. While we were undertaking this research, we found that the area of quadrilaterals supplied grist for broader and richer discussions than we had first anticipated. The intended audience includes curriculum developers, researchers, teachers, teacher trainers, and anyone interested in language and its use.
Download or read book Shape Up! written by David A. Adler and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hands-on introduction to polygons that takes the fear out of math and puts the fun back in! Draw three dots on a piece of paper. Or maybe-- draw three dots on a slice of cheese. What happens when you connect the dots? With bright, colorful illustrations and a simple, funny text, Shape Up! introduces triangles, quadrangles, and other polygons to young readers, encouraging them to play along, and learn everything there is to know about shapes. Explaining basic geometric concepts and offering definitions for important vocabulary, this introduction to shapes, lines, and angles is to good to miss-- even if the jokes can be a little . . . cheesy. Created by a respected children's nonfiction author and former math teacher, this is a perfect grounding in basic shapes-- and a lot of fun, too.

Book excerpt: A collection of five essays discussing the origin, meaning, and relevance of the United Methodist Church's "Wesleyan Quadrilateral" which is scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. The authors agree that American Methodism theology should give scripture primary importance over the other areas, without negating them, in order to move past the current debate and into the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Euclidean Geometry in Mathematical Olympiads by : Evan Chen
Download or read book Euclidean Geometry in Mathematical Olympiads written by Evan Chen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a challenging problem-solving book in Euclidean geometry, assuming nothing of the reader other than a good deal of courage. Topics covered included cyclic quadrilaterals, power of a point, homothety, triangle centers; along the way the reader will meet such classical gems as the nine-point circle, the Simson line, the symmedian and the mixtilinear incircle, as well as the theorems of Euler, Ceva, Menelaus, and Pascal. Another part is dedicated to the use of complex numbers and barycentric coordinates, granting the reader both a traditional and computational viewpoint of the material. The final part consists of some more advanced topics, such as inversion in the plane, the cross ratio and projective transformations, and the theory of the complete quadrilateral. The exposition is friendly and relaxed, and accompanied by over 300 beautifully drawn figures. The emphasis of this book is placed squarely on the problems. Each chapter contains carefully chosen worked examples, which explain not only the solutions to the problems but also describe in close detail how one would invent the solution to begin with. The text contains a selection of 300 practice problems of varying difficulty from contests around the world, with extensive hints and selected solutions. This book is especially suitable for students preparing for national or international mathematical olympiads or for teachers looking for a text for an honor class.

Book Synopsis A Cornucopia of Quadrilaterals by : Claudi Alsina
Download or read book A Cornucopia of Quadrilaterals written by Claudi Alsina and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cornucopia of Quadrilaterals collects and organizes hundreds of beautiful and surprising results about four-sided figures—for example, that the midpoints of the sides of any quadrilateral are the vertices of a parallelogram, or that in a convex quadrilateral (not a parallelogram) the line through the midpoints of the diagonals (the Newton line) is equidistant from opposite vertices, or that, if your quadrilateral has an inscribed circle, its center lies on the Newton line. There are results dating back to Euclid: the side-lengths of a pentagon, a hexagon, and a decagon inscribed in a circle can be assembled into a right triangle (the proof uses a quadrilateral and circumscribing circle); and results dating to Erdős: from any point in a triangle the sum of the distances to the vertices is at least twice as large as the sum of the distances to the sides. The book is suitable for serious study, but it equally rewards the reader who dips in randomly. It contains hundreds of challenging four-sided problems. Instructors of number theory, combinatorics, analysis, and geometry will find examples and problems to enrich their courses. The authors have carefully and skillfully organized the presentation into a variety of themes so the chapters flow seamlessly in a coherent narrative journey through the landscape of quadrilaterals. The authors' exposition is beautifully clear and compelling and is accessible to anyone with a high school background in geometry.
