Some people will tell us to just get over it or just snap out of it. Such individuals usually don't understand depression or what it is really like to be depressed. Their suggestions, although perhaps well-intentioned, are of little help. If you have struggled with depression, then you know that there are times When You Can't Snap Out of It. However, it isn't impossible to find help, take charge, and overcome. Dr. Bevilacqua identifies the most common symptoms of depression and describes clear and practical guidelines for recovery. The strategies he describes are based in the theory of cognitive therapy, which is one of the most effective forms of treating depression. You can set yourself on the path to wholeness and happiness today. There is always hope for healing. 'Finally! After struggling for 30 years I have found a book with simple exercises that allow me to cut through the fog and begin my journey out of depression.' - K.J. 'I've struggled with depression since being a teenager. Dr. Lou's book is easy to follow, relatable, practical, and hopeful. It's a resource you will refer to over and over again.' – Lisa

Childhood abuse, car accidents, the sudden death of a loved one, the list goes on and on. You try and put things in the past and forget about them, but it can be hard to move on. Your friends and family tell you to “get over it,” “move on,” and “just snap out of it.” You try, but it’s not that easy. The more they tell you things like that, the worse you feel, because now you are a failure, in addition to everything else. But there is a better way. YOU CAN'T JUST SNAP OUT OF IT will teach you how to take charge of your recovery from psychological trauma. It gives you tools to put you on the road to recovery, like stress reduction techniques, meditation, mindfulness training, and anxiety reduction strategies, as well as changes in lifestyle that can improve your mood and how you feel about yourself. We also offer tips to partners and families to help them understand what you are going through, because loved ones may hold the key to your recovery. The book introduces the START-NOW Program, which we have developed. It incorporates an easy-to-remember acronym that spells out an eight-point plan to recovery, teaching principles like seeking safety, talking about trauma, learning altruism, and many others. This book lets YOU be in charge of your recovery, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Taking charge of your own recovery from psychological trauma is a powerful tool.

I had just come out of a six-month depression. I heard him speak to my heart, and he told me that he wanted me to write a book on what it looks like, feels like, and what it is to be in a depressed person's body. My purpose in writing this book is to help educate people about this debilitating disease so that they can become more compassionate and supportive of their loved ones, friends, coworkers, and depressed people in general. If you have never experienced depression personally, it is difficult to understand and hard to relate to. I found out in talking to many people that mental illness touches almost every family. There are so many suicides that are taking place in our world today. That is why it is so important to arm yourselves with the knowledge of the signs and symptoms of depression so that you can get that person help. In the book, "You Can't Just Snap out of It," there is also a message of hope. You don't have to suffer in silence any longer. There is help out there for you. All you have to do is ask.

Its popularity among society and the professional community is growing by leaps and bounds. What is it and what are its limits? What is the fundamental nature of cognitive therapy? It is, to my way of thinking, simple but profound. To understand it, it is useful to think back to the history of behavior therapy, to the basic development made by Joseph Wolpe. In the 1950s, Wolpe astounded the therapeutic world and infuriated his colleagues by finding a simple cure for phobias. The psychoanalytic establishment held that phobias-irrational and intense fear of certain objects, such as cats-were just surface manifesta tions of deeper, underlying disorders. The psychoanalysts said their source was the buried fear in male children of castration by the father in retaliation for the son's lust for his mother. For females, this fear is directed toward the opposite sex parent. The biomedical theorists, on the other hand, claimed that some as yet undiscovered disorder in brain chemistry must be the underlying problem. Both groups insisted that to treat only the patient's fear of cats would do no more good than it would to put rouge over measles. Wolpe, however, reasoned that irrational fear of something isn't just a symptom of a phobia; it is the whole phobia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David Jones has written a compelling book about the complex issues entailed in being family members of sufferers from mental illness. The book provides us with a critical appraisal of the sociological and psychological conceptual layers and the policy context necessary for understanding these issues, all too often missing in other books written about this subject... Through in-depth interviews of forty carers, coached in a way which enables the carers to talk in their own voice, we get the rare opportunity of understanding the world of these carers ... In letting the carers speak Jones is enabling all of us to listen to them with the respect they deserve... All of us - but especially mental health professionals, policy makers and researchers - need to learn from the methodology utilised in this study, and the content of the rich experiential seam Jones exposes, as to how to listen better to carers, and on which themes to focus in our working partnership with users and carers." - Professor Shulamit Ramon, Anglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge This book fills a gap in our knowledge about the experiences of families of people suffering from severe mental illness. Original research material is used to support claims that families are struggling with complex feelings such as loss, anger and shame. It is also argued that the ideas families themselves hold about mental illness form an important part of the cultural world in which mental illnesses are understood. This stimulating book challenges many conventional assumptions about family relationships by arguing that they have to be understood in terms of 'myths' that bring a certain amount of order to complex areas of emotional life. The author argues that families if properly understood, can provide significant support for people with severe mental illness.

Book excerpt: In the short but powerful book Snap Out of It, author Barry Bragg invites you to discover that a questioning mind, an independent spirit, and a sense of humor are the holy trinity of spiritual sanity. An honest examination of religion takes us to a place of humility, not rigid dogma or superiority. We discover, at long last, that the Universe does not behave in a way that makes us comfortable, and, in fact, is bursting with unpredictability and diversity. Doubt is essential, for illusion and self-deception are the hallmarks of the human mind. With wishful thinking on one end, and paranoid delusion on the other, the ability to see through these products of human imagination takes us to safety and sanity. This book gives you the information and inspiration to resist the pressure to conform to "shoulds," either from religion or society. Refuse to pretend you "know" when you don't know. Stand tall and celebrate the gifts of your innate reason, intuition and individuality. If you walk a spiritual path, make sure it comes from the light of your own being, a spontaneous, personal, free-flowing, natural spirituality. Traditional religion tells us the word of God is true. However, if you begin with the idea that whatever is true is the word of God, and make that search for yourself, you're on the journey to inner freedom. May this book be a source of light and liberation, and, yes, laughter. Reclaim your spiritual sanity and integrity, and know that the true will set you free.
