Book excerpt: This book investigates the possible circuit solutions to overcome the temperature and supply voltage-sensitivity of fully-integrated time references for ultra-low-power communication in wireless sensor networks. The authors provide an elaborate theoretical introduction and literature study to enable full understanding of the design challenges and shortcomings of current oscillator implementations. Furthermore, a closer look to the short-term as well as the long-term frequency stability of integrated oscillators is taken. Next, a design strategy is developed and applied to 5 different oscillator topologies and 1 sensor interface. All 6 implementations are subject to an elaborate study of frequency stability, phase noise and power consumption. In the final chapter all blocks are compared to the state of the art.

Book excerpt: Demonstrating how to apply financial formulas to prove or disprove the utility of 100% Nondesctructive testing (NDT), this book helps readers build the financial case for their NDT projects. It not only explains how 100% inspection by high-tech methods can save money for a manufacturing organization, but also how to justify this cost. Providing examples of successful NDT implementation drawn from factory situations, the author describes high-tech inspection technology in the context of modern ISO Quality Standards, TQM theory, and Statistical Process Control. Placing NDT in the historical context of quality and inspection, the book provides three methods of calculation for proving its validity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of software system with acceptable level of reliability and quality within available time frame and budget becomes a challenging objective. This objective could be achieved to some extent through early prediction of number of faults present in the software, which reduces the cost of development as it provides an opportunity to make early corrections during development process. The book presents an early software reliability prediction model that will help to grow the reliability of the software systems by monitoring it in each development phase, i.e. from requirement phase to testing phase. Different approaches are discussed in this book to tackle this challenging issue. An important approach presented in this book is a model to classify the modules into two categories (a) fault-prone and (b) not fault-prone. The methods presented in this book for assessing expected number of faults present in the software, assessing expected number of faults present at the end of each phase and classification of software modules in fault-prone or no fault-prone category are easy to understand, develop and use for any practitioner. The practitioners are expected to gain more information about their development process and product reliability, which can help to optimize the resources used.

In the case of the electrical industry, safety is critical and the codes and regulations which determine safe practices are both diverse and complicated. Employers, electricians, electrical system designers, inspectors, engineers and architects must comply with safety standards listed in the National Electrical Code, OSHA and NFPA 70E. Unfortunately, the publications which list these safety requirements are written in very technically advanced terms and the average person has an extremely difficult time understanding exactly what they need to do to ensure safe installations and working environments. Electrical Safety Code Manual will tie together the various regulations and practices for electrical safety and translate these complicated standards into easy to understand terms. This will result in a publication that is a practical, if not essential, asset to not only designers and company owners but to the electricians who must put compliance requirements into action in the field. - Best-practice methods for accident prevention and electrical hazard avoidance - Current safety regulations, including new standards from OSHA, NEC, NESC, and NFPA - Information on low-, medium-, and high-voltage safety systems - Step-by-step guidelines on safety audits - Training program how-to's, from setup to rescue and first aid procedures

Book excerpt: The most widely used technique for solving and optimizing a real-life problem is linear programming (LP), due to its simplicity and efficiency. However, in order to handle the impreciseness in the data, the neutrosophic set theory plays a vital role which makes a simulation of the decision-making process of humans by considering all aspects of decision (i.e., agree, not sure and disagree). By keeping the advantages of it, in the present work, we have introduced the neutrosophic LP models where their parameters are represented with a trapezoidal neutrosophic numbers and presented a technique for solving them. The presented approach has been illustrated with some numerical examples and shows their superiority with the state of the art by comparison. Finally, we conclude that proposed approach is simpler, efficient and capable of solving the LP models as compared to other methods.

Book excerpt: The only resource devoted Solely to Inductance Inductance is an unprecedented text, thoroughly discussing "loop" inductance as well as the increasingly important "partial" inductance. These concepts and their proper calculation are crucial in designing modern high-speed digital systems. World-renowned leader in electromagnetics Clayton Paul provides the knowledge and tools necessary to understand and calculate inductance. Unlike other texts, Inductance provides all the details about the derivations of the inductances of various inductors, as well as: Fills the need for practical knowledge of partial inductance, which is essential to the prediction of power rail collapse and ground bounce problems in high-speed digital systems Provides a needed refresher on the topics of magnetic fields Addresses a missing link: the calculation of the values of the various physical constructions of inductors—both intentional inductors and unintentional inductors—from basic electromagnetic principles and laws Features the detailed derivation of the loop and partial inductances of numerous configurations of current-carrying conductors With the present and increasing emphasis on high-speed digital systems and high-frequency analog systems, it is imperative that system designers develop an intimate understanding of the concepts and methods in this book. Inductance is a much-needed textbook designed for senior and graduate-level engineering students, as well as a hands-on guide for working engineers and professionals engaged in the design of high-speed digital and high-frequency analog systems.

Book excerpt: These Lecture Notes contain the material relative to the courses given at the CIME summer school held in Cetraro, Italy from August 29 to September 3, 2011. The topic was "Hamilton-Jacobi Equations: Approximations, Numerical Analysis and Applications". The courses dealt mostly with the following subjects: first order and second order Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, properties of viscosity solutions, asymptotic behaviors, mean field games, approximation and numerical methods, idempotent analysis. The content of the courses ranged from an introduction to viscosity solutions to quite advanced topics, at the cutting edge of research in the field. We believe that they opened perspectives on new and delicate issues. These lecture notes contain four contributions by Yves Achdou (Finite Difference Methods for Mean Field Games), Guy Barles (An Introduction to the Theory of Viscosity Solutions for First-order Hamilton-Jacobi Equations and Applications), Hitoshi Ishii (A Short Introduction to Viscosity Solutions and the Large Time Behavior of Solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations) and Grigory Litvinov (Idempotent/Tropical Analysis, the Hamilton-Jacobi and Bellman Equations).
