This publication exposes the major issues associated with programming environments for manufacturing and illustrates specific software systems developed for industrial application. Clear and concise statements are made on the state-of-the-art and recent trends in manufacturing languages and programming environments. The book discusses the diverse approaches that are currently under consideration in North America and Europe. It gives the reader an understanding of how manufacturing languages can be used to integrate computer controlled machines and intelligent sensors in automated manufacturing systems including machine tools, robots, inspection and material handling equipment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious exposition by Malik and Mordeson on the fuzzification of discrete structures not only supplies a solid basic text on this key topic, but also serves as a viable tool for learning basic fuzzy set concepts "from the ground up" due to its unusual lucidity of exposition. While the entire presentation of this book is in a completely traditional setting, with all propositions and theorems provided totally rigorous proofs, the readability of the presentation is not compromised in any way; in fact, the many ex cellently chosen examples illustrate the often tricky concepts the authors address. The book's specific topics - including fuzzy versions of decision trees, networks, graphs, automata, etc. - are so well presented, that it is clear that even those researchers not primarily interested in these topics will, after a cursory reading, choose to return to a more in-depth viewing of its pages. Naturally, when I come across such a well-written book, I not only think of how much better I could have written my co-authored monographs, but naturally, how this work, as distant as it seems to be from my own area of interest, could nevertheless connect with such. Before presenting the briefest of some ideas in this direction, let me state that my interest in fuzzy set theory (FST) has been, since about 1975, in connecting aspects of FST directly with corresponding probability concepts. One chief vehicle in carrying this out involves the concept of random sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most recent research results on modeling and control of robot manipulators. Chapter 1 gives unified tools to derive direct and inverse geometric, kinematic and dynamic models of serial robots and addresses the issue of identification of the geometric and dynamic parameters of these models. Chapter 2 describes the main features of serial robots, the different architectures and the methods used to obtain direct and inverse geometric, kinematic and dynamic models, paying special attention to singularity analysis. Chapter 3 introduces global and local tools for performance analysis of serial robots. Chapter 4 presents an original optimization technique for point-to-point trajectory generation accounting for robot dynamics. Chapter 5 presents standard control techniques in the joint space and task space for free motion (PID, computed torque, adaptive dynamic control and variable structure control) and constrained motion (compliant force-position control). In Chapter 6, the concept of vision-based control is developed and Chapter 7 is devoted to specific issue of robots with flexible links. Efficient recursive Newton-Euler algorithms for both inverse and direct modeling are presented, as well as control methods ensuring position setting and vibration damping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motion Control is a rapidly evolving topic, with a wide range of applications, especially in robotics. Speed and position control of a mechanical system has always been one of the main problems in automatic control, as the demand increases for advanced levels of accuracy and dynamics. The study of motion control aims to combine theoretical approaches with the realization of mechanical systems characterized by high levels of performance. The IFAC workshop focused on the evolution of: mechanical systems modelling; control strategies; intelligent instrumentation; dedicated microprocessor devices, and new fields of application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quantization errors that affect the practical implementation of a real-time digital system using fixed-point arithmetic are examined. A digital simulation scheme written in the C programming language suitable for use on a microcomputer is presented to help analyze these quantization errors. The digital simulation scheme presented is an interactive program that includes a graphics module that allows the user to change the characteristics of system components to show their affect on overall system performance. The simulation is used to analyze both a digital filtering and a computer controlled system. The results obtained from the digital simulation are compared to results obtained experimentally using actual real-time systems.

Book excerpt: With the approach of the 21st century, and the current trends in manufacturing, the role of computer-controlled flexible manufacturing an integral part in the success of manufacturing enterprises. will take Manufacturing environments are changing to small batch (with batch sizes diminishing to a quantity of one), larger product variety, produc tion on demand with low lead times, with the ability to be 'agile.' This is in stark contrast to conventional manufacturing which has relied on economies of scale, and where change is viewed as a disruption and is therefore detrimental to production. Computer integrated manufac turing (CIM) and flexible manufacturing practices are a key component in the transition from conventional manufacturing to the 'new' manu facturing environment. While the use of computers in manufacturing, from controlling indi vidual machines (NC, Robots, AGVs etc.) to controlling flexible manu facturing systems (FMS) has advanced the flexibility of manufacturing environments, it is still far from reaching its full potential in the environment of the future. Great strides have been made in individual technologies and control of FMS has been the subject of considerable research, but computerized shop floor control is not nearly as flexible or integrated as hyped in industrial and academic literature. In fact, the integrated systems have lagged far behind what could be achieved with existing technology.
