Book excerpt: Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands.

Book Synopsis Production Transformation Policy Review of Chile by : Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation
Download or read book Production Transformation Policy Review of Chile written by Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation and published by Organization for Economic Co-Operation & Development. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chile is a relatively stable, well-connected, open economy. Over the last decade the country has managed to increase its participation in global value chains and to export new products. However, its knowledge base is limited, productivity is stagnating and economic opportunities are still concentrated in a few places and limited to a few activities and firms. Today's global production revolution offers a window of opportunity for Chile to "update" its growth model to become more inclusive and sustainable. The Production Transformation Policy Review of Chile (PTPR) uses a forward-looking framework to assess the country readiness to embrace change, with perspectives on solar energy, mining and agro-food, and identifies priorities for future reforms. This review is the result of government-business dialogue and rigorous analysis. It benefitted from peer learning from Sweden, Germany and the Emilia Romagna Region in Italy through the OECD Initiative for Policy Dialogue on Global Value Chains, Production Transformation and Development.

Download or read book Forest Biomass written by T. Satoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.
Book Synopsis Operational Efficiency in Forestry by : B. Sundberg
Download or read book Operational Efficiency in Forestry written by B. Sundberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is our conviction - based on many years of teaching and practical experience - that professional skill in forestry will develop more rea dily and more efficiently if forestry students are presented with a clear understanding, at an early stage, of the impact of the physical factors that both enhance and inhibit forestry activities. Tnis know ledge is best aquired by adressing the physical world of forestry with a set of analytical tools through which an almost infinite number of variables can be listed in order, be measured and their interaction be explored and resolved. This is the main purpose of this joint effort, presented in two volumes, Part I and Part II. Part I is analytic, written as a basic text for undergraduates in cour ses such as logging, transport, forest engineering and even forest ma nagement. It deals with the fundamentals of technology in forestry as determined by the physical environment. Briefly it can be visualized as the application of forestry wi thin the parameters: space, time and energy. Forestry is a process with a long time horizon. Free solar energy creates biomass which, with the aid of other forms of energy, is converted into products and services. A knowledge of the dependecies and interactions is indiGpensible for the forestry profession. The analytic approach serves two purposes: to bring about a clear un derstanding of the real world of forest and to develop tools through which efficiency and productivity can be explored and improved.
Download or read book Biomass written by D. O. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1987-05-18 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first to give a truly international view on biomass. This international collection of contributed articles examines the use of biomass as a regenerable energy resource in a number of different countries. They look at the ways in which biomass can be used, in wood-burning stoves, as charcoal, biogas, or as liquid fuels. The influence of the uses of biomass upon people in developing countries and their environment is considered in detail. This volume will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone who is concerned with today's use of energy and its consequences.

Book Synopsis The Next Production Revolution by : Collectif
Download or read book The Next Production Revolution written by Collectif and published by OECD. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines the opportunities and challenges, for business and government, associated with technologies bringing about the “next production revolution”. These include a variety of digital technologies (e.g. the Internet of Things and advanced robotics), industrial biotechnology, 3D printing, new materials and nanotechnology. Some of these technologies are already used in production, while others will be available in the near future. All are developing rapidly. As these technologies transform the production and the distribution of goods and services, they will have far-reaching consequences for productivity, skills, income distribution, well-being and the environment. The more that governments and firms understand how production could develop in the near future, the better placed they will be to address the risks and reap the benefits.
Book Synopsis Utilization of Residual Forest Biomass by : Pentti Hakkila
Download or read book Utilization of Residual Forest Biomass written by Pentti Hakkila and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increase in the demand for wood results in improved recovery and less residual biomass in the forests. Paradoxically, interest in forest residue as a renewable source of raw material seems to be in a reverse ratio to its availability in a certain area. Finland and Sweden are probably more dependent on forestry and forest in dustries than any other developed countries in the world. A sufficiency of raw ma terial for integrated forest industries is vital for the national economy of both countries, and a great deal of attention is being paid to the long-term potential of unutilized biomass left behind in logging operations. Furthermore, since these countries possess no reserves of fossil fuels, and since their per-capita consump tion of primary energy is exceptionally high, they also consider unmerchantable forest biomass a realistic source of indigenous energy. A joint Nordic research project on harvesting and utilization of logging residue was carried out in 1969-1976 under the auspices of the Nordic Research Council on Forest Operations. This fruitful cooperation soon gave rise to related national projects in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, stimulating further research and producing practical applications. Concurrently, particularly after the worldwide energy crisis in 1973, research on all aspects of utilization of forest bio mass mushroomed in the United States, Canada, and the Soviet Union. An ex plosive increase occurred in both the number and diversity of biomass studies.
