The very etymology of the word 'idiom' reveals what's so endlessly fascinating about the wide range of colourful phrases we use in everyday speech: their peculiarity. They're peculiar both in the sense of being particular or unique to the culture from which they originate, and in the sense of being downright odd. To cite three random examples - from American English, Dutch and Italian - what on Earth are a snow job, a monkey sandwich story, and Mr Punch's secret? Fascinating and illuminating, Idiomantics explains all... The ideal gift for word buffs and in fact, anyone who enjoys a good yarn, this playful book looks at 12 groups of idioms around the world, looking at subjects such as fun and games, gastronomic delights and the daily grind.

Book excerpt: From a critically acclaimed master of language, a look at the trends, phenomena, and battles on the front lines of modern American English. In You Need to Read This, language expert Ben Yagoda writes about the cuckoo things we have done to the English language. His witty, insightful, and wise observations and advice are gathered here together for the first time. From the phenomenon of curate, to the rise of the glottal stop, to the prevalence of starting sentences with so, to the story of an epithet of the moment (douchey), Yagoda chronicles the trends in our language. In the second part of You Need to Read This, he examines the issue of mistakes and “mistakes,” and the battles between prescriptivists, who nitpick grammar, and descriptivists, who defend new expressions and casual usage. Yagoda is on the front lines of the language wars, and you need to read this book to find out which side you’re on.

Book Synopsis Dickens's Idiomatic Imagination by : Peter J. Capuano
Download or read book Dickens's Idiomatic Imagination written by Peter J. Capuano and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickens's Idiomatic Imagination offers an original analysis of how Charles Dickens's use of "low" and "slangular" (his neologism) language allowed him to express and develop his most sophisticated ideas. Using a hybrid of digital (distant) and analogue (close) reading methodologies, Peter J. Capuano considers Dickens's use of bodily idioms—"right-hand man," "shoulder to the wheel," "nose to the grindstone"—against the broader lexical backdrop of the nineteenth century. Dickens was famously drawn to the vernacular language of London's streets, but this book is the first to call attention to how he employed phrases that embody actions, ideas, and social relations for specific narrative and thematic purposes. Focusing on the mid- to late career novels Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend, Capuano demonstrates how Dickens came to relish using common idioms in uncommon ways and the possibilities they opened up for artistic expression. Dickens's Idiomatic Imagination establishes a unique framework within the social history of language alteration in nineteenth-century Britain for rethinking Dickens's literary trajectory and its impact on the vocabularies of generations of novelists, critics, and speakers of English.
Book Synopsis Catch Phrases, Cliches and Idioms by :
Download or read book Catch Phrases, Cliches and Idioms written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catch phrases such as "shop till you drop," cliches like "life begins at forty" and idioms such as "talk the hind leg off a donkey" have long enriched the English language. Here is a collection of thousands of familiar expressions--a treasure trove of idea-starters and memory-joggers that will make for more imaginative creative writing. An advertising copywriter working on a campaign for, say, a granola-peanut product can easily find the instantly-recognizable phrase "Energy Crunch"--a clever and informative headline. Each phrase is cross-referenced by key word. Thus "raining cats and dogs," for example, appears under "cat," "dog" and "rain." In most cases, various forms of the word are listed under the root word. So under "run" you will find not only sayings that include the word "run," but those that include "running," "runneth," "runner" and "run-around."

Book Synopsis Food and Drink Idioms in English by : Laura Pinnavaia
Download or read book Food and Drink Idioms in English written by Laura Pinnavaia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idioms carry an aura of mystery for all speakers, owing to the discrepancy between their literal and non-literal meanings. This book clears up some of these ambiguities, by examining a series of expressions that have derived from the most instinctive and essential of all human behaviour: eating and drinking. The quantity and quality of 276 food and drink idioms are explored, investigating two hundred and fifty years of English monolingual lexicography and forty years of usage as attested by contemporary linguistic corpora. The examination of these idioms’ syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, historical, social and cultural characteristics will foster in speakers a whole new approach to idiom comprehension and usage, and will constitute thought-provoking ground for further research in other idiom domains.
