Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between bicultural identity integration, maladaptive parental styles, and depression among a sample of 144 immigrant adults. In addition, personal identity integration--critical in self-development--is explored as a mediator of this relationship. Previous research has explored the relationship between parental styles of indifference, abuse, and overprotection and various adjustment outcomes (e.g., depression). The current study is the first of its kind to examine an individual's cultural and developmental integration processes. It was hypothesized that (1) bicultural identity integration would be correlated with personal identity integration; (2) bicultural identity integration would mediate the relationship between parenting style and depression, and (3) personal identity integration would mediate the relationship between parenting style and depression. Results indicated that, while no mediational relationships were supported, (1) children who perceived their mother as more indifferent or overprotective reported lower levels of bicultural identity integration, (2) children who perceived their mother as overprotective reported higher levels of depression, and (3) children who perceived their father as more overprotective reported lower bicultural identity integration. The present findings expand and validate the relationship between identity integration, parental styles, and depression and merit further study in order to strengthen understanding.
