Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of conflict and war have forced millions of men, women and children to flee from their homes and seek refuge in other parts of the country or in foreign lands - Afghanistan is one such country. This book is a study of the displaced Afghan migrant population in India, in particular the persecuted Sikhs and Hindus who are religious minorities in Afghanistan and make up a majority of Afghan migrants in India. It explores the relationship between acculturation and identity development. By focusing on the interactions between the Afghan immigrant population and the Indian society, the author analyses how the community negotiates identity and marginality in a country that does not recognize them as refugees. The author explains how the Afghan migrant population manages and negotiates various identities, bestowed upon them by the societies in their home and host countries in their day to day existence in India. An important study of acculturation and adaptation issues of migrant groups in the setting of a developing country, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of refugee and migration studies, ethnography of (ethnic) identity, and Middle East and South Asian Studies.
Book Synopsis Intersectional Media by : Jane Campbell
Download or read book Intersectional Media written by Jane Campbell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intersectional Media: Representations of Marginalized Identities analyzes media depictions of a variety of intersecting identities. Through a study examining how components of identity such as race, class, ethnicity, age, ability, class, and sexuality mesh and form a unique worldview, contributors to this collection frame their understanding of media intersectionality as complex and multi-layered studies of identity. Rather than focusing on any one component of marginalized identity, this book broadens the scope of inquiry and encourages audiences to recognize the complexity of media analysis when a combination of marginalized identities is depicted. Contributors demonstrate their understanding of how different components of identity combine and create new, original components of identity, paving the way for new studies of both media and identity. Scholars of media studies, identity studies, cultural studies, minority studies, gender studies, race studies, and sociology will find this book particularly useful.

Book Synopsis Marginality and Crisis by : Akanmu G. Adebayo
Download or read book Marginality and Crisis written by Akanmu G. Adebayo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marginality and Crisis: Globalization and Identity in Contemporary Africa extends the scope and understanding of the effects of globalization and its forces on Africa. With each chapter written by specialists who recognize that the future of Africa is entwined with that of the rest of the world, this volume explains with fresh vigor the new thinking on the historical specificity, value, opportunity, and shortcomings of globalization for a continent many regard as marginalized and in crisis. In the face of much pessimism, several questions have engaged the attention of this young generation of African scholars: Where is Africa in relation to globalization? Where are the things that make Africa Africa (such as economy, politics, culture, identity, and human relations) headed? Are Africa's communities helpless against global forces or empowered by new avenues of access? How do scholars and policymakers engage the problems of globalization vis-^-vis Africa's ethnic, linguistic, and other identities? What are the economic and political trajectories in various countries and localities? An invaluable source for scholars, students, and the general reader, the essays in this book have confidently and clearly explored and explained the crises that have engulfed the continent in the age of globalization. Unlike other works that have dwelt only on the continent's victimhood, this volume identifies key areas in which Africa can become more proactive and outward-looking in response to the forces and values that take the globe as their reference points.

Download or read book Multiple Marginality and Gangs written by James Diego Vigil and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Marginality and Gangs: Through a Prism Darkly unravels the youth gang problem in a multidimensional approach that encompasses the place, status, social control, subcultural, and identity facets of urban street gangs. The power of place and the status of persons and groups are the major forces that generate the many situations and conditions that give rise to gangs. In its simplest trajectory, Multiple Marginality can be modeled as follows: place/status to street socialization to street subculture to street identity. It is the actions and reactions among them that we fathom. As we witness detrimental or absent family influence, we also observe weaker, underfunded schools that limit educators’ reach. At the same time, there has been an increase in the militarization of law enforcement to deal with the youth street populations, the heaviest hand is that of the police. There is a causal relationship between social marginalization factors and gang membership. A psychological analysis also entails how street socialization leads to a street identity. In a place and status group, the cascading effects of marginalization have certainly affected—and mostly thwarted—social control institutions.
Book Synopsis Language, Identity, and Marginality in Indonesia by : Joel C. Kuipers
Download or read book Language, Identity, and Marginality in Indonesia written by Joel C. Kuipers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia's policy since independence has been to foster the national language. In some regions, local languages are still political rallying points, but their significance has diminished, and the rapid spread of Indonesian as the national language of political and religious authority has been described as the 'miracle of the developing world'. Among the Weyewa, on the island of Sumba, this shift has displaced a once vibrant tradition of ritual poetic speech, which until recently was an important source of authority, tradition, and identity. But it has also given rise to new and hybrid forms of poetic expression. This first study to analyse language change in relation to political marginality argues that political coercion or cognitive process of 'style reduction' may partially explain what has happened, but equally important in language shift is the role of linguistic ideologies.

Download or read book Marginality written by Joachim von Braun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach on understanding causes of extreme poverty and promising actions to address it. Its focus is on marginality being a root cause of poverty and deprivation. “Marginality” is the position of people on the edge, preventing their access to resources, freedom of choices, and the development of capabilities. The book is research based with original empirical analyses at local, national, and local scales; book contributors are leaders in their fields and have backgrounds in different disciplines. An important message of the book is that economic and ecological approaches and institutional innovations need to be integrated to overcome marginality. The book will be a valuable source for development scholars and students, actors that design public policies, and for social innovators in the private sector and non-governmental organizations.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Issues of Identity, Marginality and Space by : Dr. Alka Singh
Download or read book Contemporary Issues of Identity, Marginality and Space written by Dr. Alka Singh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world identity based movement brings to the fore questions of one's space, displacement, community, identity and politics. The discussions in this volume are thought provoking and throw light on the relationship between a 'place' and what the 'place' stands for, which is 'ideological' but the engineering of 'space' into 'place' actually determines what is important and essential and what comes later on as an appendix. The effort is to portray a world and a temporality which is captive to the regime of representation and on the other hand a world moving towards a 'new humanism'. The essays attempt at a sustained argument on all aspects of women's existence, and an exploration of issues pertaining to space, identity, and the question of 'otherness' .It is an effort to define what we can be and what we have to struggle to go beyond.
