Book excerpt: School psychologists have varying educational, theoretical, private practice, and district experiences, leading to different assessment strategies in identifying students with emotional disturbance (ED). An aspect of this variation is how often Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA), Positive Behavior Supports (PBS), and Response to Intervention (RTI) are utilized by school psychologists when classifying emotional disturbance. This dissertation researched current methods of assessment by school psychologists in their determination of ED; such methods included standardized testing measures, personality assessment, FBA, PBS, and implementation of RTI. This study evaluated methodologies in both school and independent practice settings. This dissertation researched the perceived usefulness of FBA, PBS, and RTI. A sample of 800 school psychologists surveyed was secured from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). From those 800 surveys, there were 201 respondents. The results were quantitatively analyzed. This research helped to ascertain the most current methods being used in the work of school psychologists. Results suggest that school psychologists consider Behavioral Checklists to be the preferred method of assessing ED whether at the district level and or if they were practicing in an outside setting. A significant number of school psychologists indicated that they utilize FBA, but many of them deem FBA to be effective or somewhat effective as opposed to very effective. RTI is utilized more often than PBS in making ED eligibility determinations.
