Book Synopsis Slavery in Massachusetts by : Henry David Thoreau
Download or read book Slavery in Massachusetts written by Henry David Thoreau and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery in Massachusetts is a classis essay by the great American writer, naturalist and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau based on a speech he gave at an anti-slavery rally at Framingham, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1854, after the re-enslavement in Boston, Massachusetts of fugitive slave Anthony Burns. Henry David Thoreau (see name pronunciation; July 12, 1817 - May 6, 1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, yogi, [3] and historian. A leading transcendentalist, [4] Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry amount to more than 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions are his writings on natural history and philosophy, in which he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern-day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close observation of nature, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and Yankee attention to practical detail.[5] He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs.

Donnelly starting when he first let known his intentions of running for the United States Congress as a 26 year old Republican in Massachusetts. The people involved were all Massachusetts Government Employees. “As I would rather not go to prison, with the use of arms, against enemies so brazenly bold, I shall use a pen and ink, to overcome thier swords, their swords, that gleam crimson, ever brighter, from wounds they so did inflict upon myself, so bodly so. Only time will tell, if the saying is true. Is the pen really, mightier than the sword? This book is my call to arms. As no one should have to live through what I was forced to endure, all in the pursuit of running for political office, with just one goal in mind, to be the people's politician."
Download or read book Turn the Tide written by Michael L. Brown and published by Charisma Media. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the power of the Holy Spirit, we can change the world instead of the world changing us. This book will provide the information you need so you can be effectively used by the Holy Spirit to bring reformation to our society in the wake of spiritual revival. You will see how God can use you in both big and small ways to fulfill His great commission. How can a spiritual outpouring in the church become a cultural awakening in the society? How can we move from revival to reformation? In Turn the Tide, Michael L. Brown, PhD, lays out the key steps believers must take in this new season of revival--from the prayer room to the home, from the schools and universities to the worlds of finance and politics--to see lasting cultural change. Drawing from historical revivals and scriptural insights, Brown challenges readers to move beyond the boundaries of the church walls and engage in a transformative journey that permeates every aspect of society. He addresses topics such as how to: deepen our prayer base infiltrate the educational system be grounded in apologetics raise up godly leaders in politics engage the culture wars in the power of the Spirit walk in God's love and truth without becoming the morality police Turn the Tide is an urgent call to believers to rise above complacency and embrace their role as catalysts for societal transformation. It is an essential guidebook for those who long to see their homes, cities, and nations transformed by the power of God.
Book Synopsis The Poorhouses of Massachusetts by : Heli Meltsner
Download or read book The Poorhouses of Massachusetts written by Heli Meltsner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the English settled in America, extreme poverty and the inability of individuals to support themselves and their families have been persistent problems. In the early nineteenth century, many communities established almshouses, or "poorhouses," in a valiant but ultimately failed attempt to assist the destitute, including the sick, elderly, unemployed, mentally ill and orphaned, as well as unwed mothers, petty criminals and alcoholics. This work details the rise and decline of poorhouses in Massachusetts, painting a portrait of life inside these institutions and revealing a history of constant political and social turmoil over issues that dominate the conversation about welfare recipients even today. The first study to address the role of architecture in shaping as well as reflecting the treatment of paupers, it also provides photographs and histories of dozens of former poorhouses across the state, many of which still stand.
