Book excerpt: It was supposed to be only one night. When Delta walked into my hospital room dressed in the Jericho Brotherhood cut, he was the last person I wanted to see. But I needed him—and his brothers—if I was going to get away from the criminals who’d beaten me and dropped me like a bag of trash on the hospital lawn. I hated Delta, wanted him and trusted him more than any man I’d ever known, even though we were destined to fail. The Brotherhood had stolen everything I loved—my friends, my family, my hometown. Now I was in their debt. I was prepared to pay with anything except my heart, but that’s just what he demanded from me. Like a fool, I gave it to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together in one volume for the first time: The harrowing #1 New York Times bestseller with a new introduction, and its triumphant sequel. This volume includes two memoirs by Christina Crawford, recounting the abuse she endured as a child and her journey to recovery as an adult. Mommie Dearest: An unprecedented memoir of child abuse, Mommie Dearest also chipped away at the façade of Christina Crawford’s alcoholic abuser: her adoptive mother, movie star Joan Crawford. What transpired between a seemingly fortunate child of Hollywood and a controlling and desperate woman was an escalating nightmare and, for Christina, a fierce struggle for independence. This ebook features an exclusive new introduction by the author, plus rare photographs from her personal collection and a revealing one hundred pages of material not found in the original manuscript. “A horror story that goes beyond showbiz scandal-mongering . . . Delivers an unexpected charge.” —The New York Times “Probably the most chilling account of a mother-daughter relationship ever to be put on paper.” —Los Angeles Times Survivor: Mommie Dearest cast a spotlight on the unspoken horrors of family violence, but the years following its publication tested Christina Crawford’s resilience in unexpected ways: a backlash intended to shame her, a film adaptation that compounded the trauma, alcoholism, divorce, and a stroke that left her paralyzed. Staying true to her fighting spirit, the author made a remarkable comeback. Survivor is more than a memoir of triumph over tragedy. For anyone who has suffered challenging despair, it is a spiritual roadmap to recovery, finding peace, and celebrating a fulfilling life. “One closes this fine, moving read with great respect for Christina Crawford.” —Kirkus Reviews

Thompson's ether-fuelled, savage journey to the heart of the American Dream: We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold... And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.

Book excerpt: The 40th anniversary edition of the “shocking” #1 New York Times bestseller with an exclusive new introduction by the author (Los Angeles Times). When Christina Crawford’s harrowing chronicle of child abuse was first published in 1978, it brought global attention to the previously closeted subject. It also shed light on the guarded world of Hollywood and stripped away the façade of Christina’s relentless, alcoholic abuser: her adoptive mother, movie star Joan Crawford. Christina was a young girl shown off to the world as a fortunate little princess. But at home, her lonely, controlling, even ruthless mother made her life a nightmare. A fierce battle of wills, their relationship could be characterized as an ultimately successful, for Christina, struggle for independence. She endured and survived, becoming the voice of so many other victims who suffered in silence, and giving them the courage to forge a productive life out of chaos. This ebook edition features an exclusive new introduction by the author, plus rare photographs from her personal collection and one hundred pages of revealing material not found in the original manuscript.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hand book of complete English grammar - A comprehensive guide- by Prabir Rai Chaudhuri ABOUT THIS BOOK This book is intended as an introductory text for courses in English grammar at secondary and tertiary level. It offers an outline account of the most important and central grammatical constructions and categories in English. I have assumed only minimal prior familiarity with the structure of English: all the grammatical terminology used is systematically explained. The analysis draws on the descriptive and theoretical advances made in modern linguistics, and for this reason the book could be used for an elementary course on English within a linguistics programme. It is, however, intended for a wider audience: for any course aiming to present a descriptive overview of the structure of English. Significant departures from traditional grammar in analysis or terminology are pointed out, normally in footnotes. One distinctive feature of the book is that it discusses the major grammatical categories at both a language-particular and a general level. The language-particular account gives the distinctive grammatical properties of the various categories as they apply to English: it thus provides the criteria for determining whether some word is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb or whatever, whether some verb-form is a past participle, a past tense form, etc., whether some clause is declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamative – and so on. Analysis at the general level is concerned with what is common to the categories across languages, thus providing criteria for the application of the same terms in the grammars of different languages. Hope this book will remain as a “friend in need” in your daily life whenever you use English language as a communicative vehicle . - Prabir Rai Chaudhuri

Book excerpt: IF YOU PUT THIS BOOK DOWN IT WOULD BE A BIG MISTAKE So you have been coming here for a few years and you think you know all there is to know about Las Vegas. The Hotel and Casino management are awfully glad that you feel that way. Take it from me, that confidence you have is music to their ears that keeps them building more and more hotels. Why would you listen to me? Well if you haven't read Ashes On My Lollipop 1, you'd better. I came visiting Las Vegas for the first time in 1958. I continued to visit at least twice a year till 1988. I was the Controller of a Travel Wholesaler in New York that sent thousands of people to Las Vegas. In 1988, I moved here and had occasion to be in the Real Estate business in the height of the boom. I then spent about 5 years teaching in several colleges. I taught some senior citizens how to sell their own homes and became the nemesis of many realtors, who weren't allowed to sell a home in 10 days and get a 6% commission. People were selling their homes in California, which they had bought years ago for $90,000-. They were getting over $500,000- for them and moving to Las Vegas to find another $90,000- home, which rose astronomically until the inevitable slump that hit Las Vegas about 2008. If they had sold in 2005, they would have turned an enormous profit for the second time in their lives. But, WHO KNEW? I also taught Travel and Accounting in college. Then in 1998, I began driving a taxi. I did this for 12 years. Do you have any idea how much you can learn about a city with this job? This book is full of the inside scoop of this city. Tell me who else do you know that has been in my positions in Las Vegas since 1958? Just for the non-accounting minds out there, that's 54 years. You have a choice. Listen to the hype for this city and weep. I'd rather have you read this book and be aware. Because, through it all I still believe that Las Vegas is the greatest city in the world!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “brutal and unflinching” novel of fleeting love in Sin City inspired the film starring Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue (Jay McInerney, author of Bright Lights, Big City). John O’Brien’s debut novel, Leaving Las Vegas, is an emotionally wrenching story of a woman who embraces life and a man who rejects it; a powerful tale of hard luck, hard drinking, and a relationship of tenderness and destruction. An avowed alcoholic, Ben drinks away his family, friends, and, finally, his job. With deliberate resolve, he burns the remnants of his life and heads for Las Vegas to end it all in the last great binge of his hopeless life. On the Strip, he picks up Sera, a prostitute, in what might have become another excess in his self-destructive jag. Instead, their chance meeting becomes a respite on the road to oblivion as they form a bond that is as mysterious as it is immutable.
