Book excerpt: Back in 2007, Philadelphia, aka "The City of Brotherly Love", was known as the murder capital, and averaged over a murder a day. This senseless violence has plagued our streets because of the mental state of we've been in. The only ones benefiting from this violence are the gravediggers and the prison systems. We all must play a part to end the violence and killings, especially those who added to the problem. If we try to ignore it, it will surely get our attention when it comes knocking at the door! We must learn to 'live and let live' and finally break away from the chains of psychological slavery. Without a change in thinking we may be physically free, but mentally, we will still be in prison, just minus the bars. The only way we can accomplish true freedom is by learning from life's experiences. There's nothing nice about laying in a casket and there is nothing sexy about wearing an orange jumpsuit and brown state boots.Life IS a struggle. We all know this, but we all don't accept it. If we live a bigger and better life we are going to be faced with new challenges. We must go through these challenges and allow them to build us up as stronger men and women. It is then our duty to pass down this knowledge and mindset to the next generations and break the unbroken cycle. Somebody dropped the ball many generations ago, so now, let's start to make things right.

Book excerpt: This volume explores multiple examples of how to connect classrooms to communities through service learning and participatory research to teach issues of social justice. The various chapters provide examples of how collaborations between students, faculty, and community partners are creating models of democratic spaces (on campus and off campus) where the students are teachers and the teachers are students. The purpose of this volume is to provide examples of how service learning can be integrated into courses addressing social justice issues. At the same time, it is about demonstrating the power of service learning in advancing a course content that is community-based and socially engaged. To stimulate the adaptation of the approaches described in these books, each volume includes an Activity / Methodology table that summarizes key elements of each example, such as class size, pedagogy, and other disciplinary applications. Book excerpt: Sport Policy: a comparative analysis of stability and change builds on the growing general interest in the comparative study of sport policy and the more specific interest in processes of policy change and issues associated with policy convergence. In stark contrast to many other areas of public policy such as education, personal welfare and health care there is a paucity of theoretically informed comparative studies in sport. Over recent years there has been a steady increase in public investment in sport and frequently, as a consequence, a sharper debate about how public resources should be used. However, there has been little analysis of the factors that shape the generation of domestic sport policy and little attempt to identify the variables that might influence the policy process. Sport Policy: a comparative analysis of stability and change provides a theoretically informed analysis of the sports systems in Canada, England, Germany and Norway. These economically advanced countries are carefully selected to enable the investigation of the significance of variables and because they share a number of socio-economic and sports-related characteristics, which provides the text with a unique breadth and depth of coverage. This text is a vital addition to the general paucity of literature in this area and is written by an internationally renowned author team.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and expanded third edition examines the significant changes impacting children in our society and is a significant revision of the second edition, presented 10 years previous. During that period, there have been many important “firsts” in the United States: the first African-American president; the first attempt at a health care system that includes everyone; the first time for gay marriage sanctioned by the federal government; numerous firsts in medical care; a growing globalization; and the ongoing technology revolution changing lives from day to day. At the same time, however, there have been reactionary pulls that have halted progress in many critical areas such as income inequality, racism, poverty, violence, terrorist acts, and critical flaws in the educational and criminal justice systems that continue to have disastrous consequences for children. The chapters in the book discuss the cost in human terms of some of the missing opportunities for urban children and youth and illustrate the impact of social welfare policies on children, their families, and on the broader society. To better prepare social workers to meet some of the pressing needs to children, three completely new chapters have been added to this edition: “Beyond School and Community Violence: Providing Environments Where Children Thrive”; “Urban Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Children”; and “Substance Use by Urban Children.” In addition to sections on “Economic, Social, and Environmental Factors Impacting on Urban Children,” and “Familial Factors Impacting on Urban Children,” a new section, “Behavioral and Physical Health and Urban Children,” has been introduced. This new edition provides a significant resource for students and professionals in social work, family counseling, human services, psychology, and criminal justice. Most importantly, the various chapters in this text will help social workers and social work students recognize the nature of some of the current problems affecting children and come up with innovative solutions for the future.

Book excerpt: From their earliest days in America, Catholics organized to initiate and support charitable activities. A rapidly growing church community, although marked by widening church and ethnic differences, developed the extensive network of orphanages, hospitals, schools, and social agencies that came to represent the Catholic way of giving. But changing economic, political, and social conditions have often provoked sharp debate within the church about the obligation to give, priorities in giving, appropriate organization of religious charity, and the locus of authority over philanthropic resources. This first history of Catholic philanthropy in the United States chronicles the rich tradition of the church's charitable activities and the increasing tension between centralized control of giving and democratic participation.
