Book excerpt: ICU CLINICAL PEARLS summarizes the experience of 40 years of life in the intensive care units where the sickest patients come or are sent in the hope to return to a life of reasonable quality. Arguably the safest place in the hospital. A place where any of your actions or decisions would make a tremendous difference in the life of these patients, but also a place where any mistake could cost a life. Therefore, we must apply a philosophy of perfection, of extremely safe care, and use our best science and deepest spirituality. Although we favor practice of evidence-based medicine, the fact that every patient has his/her own characteristics makes it impractical to do it solely with a scientific basis, and it yields to the clinical intuition that you can only obtain with experience and it makes the practice of critical care medicine not only a science, but also an art. Dr. Huaringa was born in Peru. Educated at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. As student, he joined the Department of Anatomy Faculty and later the Department of Medicine Faculty as Instructor of Medicine and Intersnhip Coordinator. He then became Medicine Resident, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and Fellow Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and Master of Science Health Care Administration. His academic career continued working in the ICUs as Assistant Professor Tulane University-affiliated Alexandria VAMC, ETSU-affiliated Mountain Home VAMC, Associate Professor The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Professor of Medicine Loma Linda University School of Medicine/White Memorial. He is Fellow of the ACP, ACCP, ACCM and ATS. Professor Huaringa obtained Teaching Awards in all the institutions he worked for. He was awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa title, from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.

Many ICU survivors suffer from a range of long-lasting physical and psychological issues such end stage renal disease, congestive heart failure, cognitive impairment, neuromuscular weakness, and depression or anxiety, which affect their overall quality of life and ability to lead productive lives. This lingering burden or 'legacy' of critical illness is now recognized as a major public health issue, with major efforts underway to understand how it can be prevented, mitigated, or treated. The Textbook of Post-ICU Medicine: The Legacy of Critical Care discusses the science of the recovery process and the innovative treatment regimens which are helping ICU survivors regain function as they heal following trauma or disease. Describing the major clinical syndromes affecting ICU survivors, the book delineates established or postulated biological mechanisms of the post-acute recovery process, and discusses strategies for treatment and rehabilitation to promote recovery in the ICU and in the long term. The chapters are written by an interdisciplinary panel of leading clinicians and researchers working in the field. The book serves as a unique reference for general practitioners, internists and nurses caring for long term ICU survivors as well as specialists in intensive care medicine, neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical care medicine is a dynamic and exciting arena where complex pathophysiologic states require extensive knowledge and up-to-date clinical information. An extensive kno- edge of basic pathophysiology, as well as awareness of the appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments that are used to optimize care in the critically ill is essential. Since our frst edition 7 years ago, new information crucial to the care and understanding of the critically ill patient has rapidly accumulated. Because this knowledge base crosses many different disciplines, a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach presenting the information is essential, similar to the multidisciplinary approach that is used to care for the critically ill patient. We have strived to provide this content in an easily digestible format that uses a variety of teaching tools to facilitate understanding of the presented concepts and to enhance information retention. To meet the demand to provide comprehensive and diverse education in order to und- stand the pathogenesis and optimum care of a variety of critical illnesses, we have subst- tially revised the prior topics in the frst edition with updated information. We have also markedly expanded the number of topics covered to include acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome, an expanded discussion of the physiology and operation of mechanical ventilation, obstetrical care in the ICU, neurosurgical emergencies, acute co- nary syndromes, cardiac arrhythmias, role of whole body rehabilitation in the ICU, ethical conduct of human research in the ICU, and nursing care of the ICU patient.

Book excerpt: Winner of a Christopher Award—now with a discussion guide “Perhaps one lesson to draw from the pandemic, with help from books like this one, is that the ICU experience can be changed for the better” (The Washington Post) for both patients and their families. You will learn how in this timely, urgent, and compassionate work by a world-renowned critical care doctor. In this rich blend of science, medical history, profoundly humane patient stories, and personal reflection, Dr. Wes Ely describes his mission to prevent ICU patients from being harmed by the technology that is keeping them alive. Readers will experience the world of critical care through the eyes of a physician who drastically changed his clinical practice to offer person-centered health care and through cutting-edge research convinced others to do the same. Dr. Ely’s groundbreaking investigations advanced the understanding of post– intensive care struggles and introduced crucial changes that reshaped treatment: minimizing sedation, maximizing mobility, and providing supportive aftercare. Dr. Ely shows that there are ways to bring humanity into the ICU and that “technology plus touch” is a proven path toward returning ICU patients to the lives they had before their hospital stays. An essential resource for anyone who will be affected by illness—which is all of us.
