Book excerpt: There have been numerous debates and discussions on the use of ICT in education, especially in English language teaching and learning. In this book, readers will find it meaningful to further revisit and re-evaluate the existing practices of ICT use for teaching-learning of English. The main aims of this book are addressing some of the critical issues in the research and practices of ICT use for English language teaching and learning in South East Asia (SEA), and discerning the wide range and extent of ICT use in different English language classrooms, where ICT serves as a mediating tool for the facilitation process of teaching and learning. These aims are guided, and then supported by the pedagogical considerations and implications that are underscored as a result of the examination of ICT use and integration in the contexts. This publication would be among the first in terms of examining ICT and English language teaching and learning in the overall SEA context, whereby there are opportunities for readers to learn from different contexts and different countries.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems and possibilities of English language education in Southeast Asia from the point-of-view of researchers who are themselves also English language teachers. The researchers are from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and New Zealand. The articles in this edited book examine teaching and language learning goals in relation to the desired development of linguistic knowledge. More importantly, the articles also reflect on the nurturing of appropriate learning abilities and independent thinking that is framed by the expanding learner awareness of identity, culture, and society within and beyond the classroom. Ultimately, the book tackles issues that emerge from the fact that we teach and learn English in a region that is hugely multicultural and multilingual.

Book excerpt: Teaching and learning in the 21st century have new implications for English language education since the core focus of learning in the 21st century involves collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication. Re-orientation of current curriculum, syllabus and content in English language education may be required and this could be attained by creating fundamental understanding of the concepts in relation to the main skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), as well as other elements such as professional development of teachers, assessment and technology integration. This book aims to provide and facilitate such understanding to researchers, teachers, students and parents in deliberating, examining and resolving the main issues that beleaguer and challenge everyone and anyone involved in the teaching and learning in the 21st century. This volume draws together various researches, theoretical understandings, ideas and practices that reflect the above.

Book excerpt: Sets out a comprehensive framework of analysis for security studies, examining the distinctive character and dynamics of security in five sectors: military, political, economic, environmental, and societal. It rejects traditionalists' case for restricting security in one sector, arguing that security is a particular type of politics applicable to a wide range of issues, and offers a constructivist operational method for distinguishing the process of securitization from that of politicization. Teaching and Researching Language Learning Strategies redraws the landscape of language learning strategies at just the right time. In this book Rebecca Oxford charts the field systematically and coherently for the benefit of language learning practitioners, students, and researchers. Offering practical, innovative suggestions for assessing, teaching, and researching language learning strategies, she provides examples of strategies and tactics from all levels, from beginners to distinguished-level learners, as well as a new taxonomy of strategies for language learning. In demonstrating why self-regulated learning strategies are necessary for language proficiency, Oxford integrates socio-cultural, cognitive, and affective dimensions, and argues convincingly for the need for conceptual cross-fertilization. Providing clear and concise explanations of the advantages and limitations of the different approaches, this book is full of practical value and theoretical insights. The book is designed to guide the reader with the use of a range of features, including: key quotes and concept boxes preview questions and chapter overviews glossary and end-of-chapter further readings sources and resources section

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with television and computers before it, today’s mobile technology challenges educators to respond and ensure their work is relevant to students. What’s changed is that this portable, cross-contextual way of engaging with the world is driving a more proactive approach to learning on the part of young people. The first full-length authored treatment of the relationship between the centrality of technological development in daily life and its potential as a means of education, Mobile Learning charts the rapid emergence of new forms of mass communication and their potential for gathering, shaping, and analyzing information, studying their transformative capability and learning potential in the contexts of school and socio-cultural change. The focus is on mobile/cell phones, PDAs, and to a lesser extent gaming devices and music players, not as "the next new thing" but meaningfully integrated into education, without objectifying the devices or technology itself. And the book fully grounds readers by offering theoretical and conceptual models, an analytical framework for understanding the issues, recommendations for specialized resources, and practical examples of mobile learning in formal as well as informal educational settings, particularly with at-risk students. Among the topics covered: • Core issues in mobile learning • Mobile devices as educational resources • Socioeconomic approaches to mobile learning • Creating situations that promote mobile learning • Ubiquitous mobility and its implications for pedagogy • Bridging the digital divide at the policy level Mobile Learning is a groundbreaking volume, sure to stimulate both discussion and innovation among educational professionals interested in technology in the context of teaching and learning.

This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book essentially covers: Temporal and spatial distribution of total precipitable water (TPW), derived from ATOVS measurements and radiosonde profiling across different geographical regions and climatic seasons in Peninsular Malaysia. Distribution of TPW at different altitudes (atmospheric layers) namely upper, lower and middle layers. Computation of empirical models correlating TPW at middle and higher atmospheric layers with that of the lower layer in order to establish possible interlayer correlation. Development of models to estimate/predict layered (lower, middle and upper) and TPW using precipitable water obtained from ATOVS satellite data and surface meteorological data (temperature, pressure and relative humidity). Development and comparison of artificial neural networks (ANN) models with the multiple linear regression (MLR) models. Contrasting precipitable water data from ATOVS with radiosonde observations, portrays the former as suitable for studies on TPW. The two sources of water vapour profiles agreed reasonably well, both seasonally and spatially across the different geographical regions and climatic seasons in Peninsular Malaysia. The developed MLR based models provide excellent predictive capabilities with seasonal and spatial dependency, especially during the northeast monsoon and northwards across Peninsular Malaysia.
