Book excerpt: The Present Book On The Iconography Of The Buddhist Sculpture Of Orissa Utilizes The Author'S Expertise Of Orissan Brahmanical Art To Develop A Similar Consistent And Reliable Iconographic And Stylistic Evolution For The Buddhist Arts Of Orissa And Its Adherence To, Or Deviation From, Surviving Textual Icono-Graphic Peculiarities. There Is Little Doubt That Orissa Played A Major Role In The Creation, Development And Dissemination Of Buddhist Doctrines And Concepts Throughout India And The Buddhist World, Particularly In Respect To Vajrayana Buddhism And The Iconography Of Sculptural Mandalas. Particular Emphasis In This Book Is Placed On The Reciprocal Influence Between Brahmanical And Buddhist Art In Orissa, Both Religions Expanding At The Same Time In Regard To The Proliferation Of Deities And Their Variant Forms, And Each Apparently Competing With The Other For Patronage And Converts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Indian Buddhist world abounds with goddesses--voluptuous tree spirits, maternal nurturers, potent healers and protectors, transcendent wisdom figures, cosmic mothers of liberation, and dancing female Buddhas. Despite their importance in Buddhist thought and practice, these female deities have received relatively little scholarly attention, and no comprehensive study of the female pantheon has been available. Buddhist Goddesses of India is the essential and definitive guide to divinities that, as Miranda Shaw writes, "operate from transcendent planes of bliss and awareness for as long as their presence may benefit living beings." Beautifully illustrated, the book chronicles the histories, legends, and artistic portrayals of nineteen goddesses and several related human figures and texts. Drawing on a sweeping range of material, from devotional poetry and meditation manuals to rituals and artistic images, Shaw reveals the character, powers, and practice traditions of the female divinities. Interpretations of intriguing traits such as body color, stance, hairstyle, clothing, jewelry, hand gestures, and handheld objects lend deep insight into the symbolism and roles of each goddess. In addition to being a comprehensive reference, this book traces the fascinating history of these goddesses as they evolved through the early, Mahayana, and Tantric movements in India and found a place in the pantheons of Tibet and Nepal."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This volume shows the iconic richesse of deities,e.g.Vayu has twentytwo forms from India,Nepal,Tibet,Mongolia,China,Japan, and Indonesia.Though some of them can be traced back to Classical texts, the others are derived from pantheons, paintings, sculptures and statuettes. Vikira a is one of the eight u as to crush passions,to undo evil karmas, and to remove obstructions to Bodhi.Vikira?a is the name of a samadhi in the Mah?vyutpatti 569 and in the ata-sahasrika Praaparamita 1420.18.He is also the central deity of the ma??ala both in anthropomorphic and form. The aesthetic lexicon of the thirtytwo forms of Yama with two, four or six arms poses the question:why so many forms and what do they transvalue?Does he also remotely reflect Yima and his Golden Age of the Iranian tradition? The iconography of Yam?ntaka is the most prolix in this volume:sixty forms with two, four, six, eight, and twelve arms.He is to be contra-distinguished from Vajrabhairava:he has a ferocious demonic face while Vajrabhairava has the face of a buffalo (mahianana ).The confusion in their identification is frequent, and hence special attention has to be drawn to their distinction. In his work on the Development of the Mongolian National Style Painting ?Mongol Zurag? in Brief (Ulanbator,1986),N.Tsultem identifies buffalo-faced Vajrabhairava as Yamantaka on plates 55 and 70.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Volume I of this two-volume monograph focuses on the deity pantheon of the sixteenth-century Mantramahodadhi, this volume compares for the first time deity descriptions extracted from two earlier and closely related texts, the anonymous Prapañcasāra (ca. tenth century) and Lakṣmaṇadeśika’s Sāradātilaka (tenth/eleventh centuries). The latter work, though based on the Prapañcasāra, treats the topics independently and incorporates new deity descriptions while omitting others. Both texts are still influential and are frequently cited. The Sanskrit text of the 78 deity descriptions extracted from the Prapañcasāra and the 101 descriptions from the Sāradātilaka is based on a comparison of different printed editions of these texts, as well as citations found in other works. The Sanskrit text is presented with a literal translation and remarks on the iconography. The introductory section addresses basic questions related to these two works. In addition, a new edition and translation of the important chapters I (on cosmogony) and 25 (on yoga) of the Sāradātilaka are presented in two appendices. A large number of illustrations of deities complement the volume. The print edition is available as a set of two volumes (9789069801193).
