Book excerpt: The success of civil engineering construction in cold regions often depends on the assessment of the potential for frost heave. Over the past two decades two models have been presented to the engineering community to identify the frost heave potential, namely: (1) the segregation potential (SP), and (2) the discrete ice lens (DIL) models. These models are based on ice segregation parameters which can be obtained from simple laboratory freezing tests. However, the reliability of the ice segregation parameters obtained from the laboratory freezing tests is still in question. In recognition of the need to improve the reliability of the measurement of ice segregation parameters in a frost heave test, a study was conducted to: (1) investigate several improvements in the step freezing test used to measure ice segregation parameters, (2) examine several approximations used to interpret the laboratory step freezing test results, (3) demonstrate the compatibility of the SP and DIL parameters, (4) propose a method to obtain reliable ice segregation parameters, and (5) demonstrate the applicability of the DIL model to address field frost heave problems. The results of the study indicated: (1) the accuracy of measured ice segregation parameters may be improved if step freezing tests are conducted under shallower temperature gradients and the water intake velocity is accurately and continuously monitored, (2) inappropriate approximations may produce a significant error in the measurement of ice segregation parameters, (3) SP may be defined either by the ratios of the (i) heave velocity/1.09 to the overall temperature gradient of the frozen soil, or (ii) water intake velocity to the temperature gradient of the frozen fringe, (4) the SP and DIL ice segregation parameters are compatible, and (5) the reliability of both models is improved through the demonstration of the compatibility of the ice segregation parameters. The application of the frost heave prediction models was studied based on ice segregation parameters determined with the improved laboratory procedure. A practical method to predict the influence of the groundwater level using the DIL ice segregation parameters was proposed. A probabilistic approach for the DIL frost heave model was developed.

Book excerpt: The magnitude and variation of forces and shear stresses, caused by frost heaving in Fairbanks silt and the adfreeze effects of a surface ice layer and a gravel layer, were determined as a function of depth by using electric strain gauges along the upper 2.75 m of a pop pile, 30.5-cm I.D. x 0.95-cm wall, and an H-pile, 25.4-cm web x 85 kg/lineal m. The peak frost heaving forces on the H-pile for three consecutive winter seasons (1982-1985) were 752,790 and 802 kN, respectively. Peak frost heaving forces on the pipe pile of 1118 and 1115 kN were determined only for the second and third winter seasons. Maximum average shear stresses acting on the H-pile were 256,348 and 308 kPa during the three winter seasons. Maximum average shear stresses acting on the pipe pile were 627 and 972 kPa for the second and third winter seasons. Ice collars were placed around the tops of both piles during the first and third winter seasons to measure the adfreeze effects of a surface ice layer. The ice layer may have contributed 15 to 20% of the peak forces measured on the piles. A 0.6-m-thick gravel layer replaced the soil around the tops of both piles for the second and third winter seasons to measure the adfreeze effects of a gravel backfill. The gravel layer on the H-pile may have contributed about 35% of the peak forces measured. Maximum heaving forces and shear stresses occurred during periods of maximum cold and soil surface heave magnitude. These were not related to the depth of frost penetration for most of the winter since forst was present at all depths extending to the permafrost table. (mjm).

Book excerpt: Frost heave is typically associated with the formation of segregation ice in fine-grained soil. Coarse-grained soil is generally considered to be non-frost susceptible. Field observa-tions and laboratory experiments show that coarse-grained soil can be extremely ice-rich in specific conditions. Previous studies have shown that oscillation of the frozen-unfrozen boundary can lead to the formation of ice by a mechanism different from the segregation ice mechanism. Conditions related to the formation of ice in coarse-grained soil were in-vestigated using modern laboratory techniques. Fourteen tests were conducted on five soil types. The thickness of soil subjected to freeze-thaw cycles was varied and controlled by the magnitude and duration of applied soil temperatures. The thickness of the ice formed increased when the sample drainage was limited or prevented during cooling. Under spe-cific conditions, the formation of a discrete ice layer was observed in coarse-grained soils. Seven samples were scanned with the pCT scanner at the completion of the warming and cooling tests. The sub-samples scanned were analyzed in 2D cross-sections, and charac-terized as 3D reconstructions. Frost heave induced by the formation of ice was observed in both fine- and coarse-grained soils, including soils that were found to be traditionally non-frost susceptible.
