Download or read book Daddy's Girls written by Suzanne Gold and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-11-17 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daddys Girls is a rich yet simple family tale of love, madness and spirit told in the three first-person points of view of its three women. Overlapping vignettes create a vivid patchwork of lifes defining moments to reveal dark forces lurking beneath the familys typical middle-class veneer as they struggle to love one another. The story is fiction with a dash of magical realism, but the inspiration is autobiographical. Daddys Girls recently received a glowing review from Terry Mathews of Bookbrowser.com. She calls it A book that will speak to you on many levels...that can alter your perception of the world, broaden your horizons and urge you to think outside the box. The best book Ive read since Cunninghams THE HOURS. And Ruth Williams, author of Younger Than That Now says Daddys Girls is a luxuriant narrative, telling the stories of three complex women two sisters and their mother and how their lives are impacted by the mental illness of one. A fascinating and obviously well-informed look at heartbreaking realities. This is a book written from the heart.

You will find out why furniture manufacturing in the Piedmont area of North Carolina was important in the author's life and the state of North Carolina. Depression era modes of transportation and communication come alive from her excellent descriptions. Due to a family incident religion's decline and eventual rejection unfolds slowly. An annual family event helps the reader learn about the homestead of a southern family who had owned slaves. Terms used in local government reminds the reader that North Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies and was settled from east to west. Public school education in her college town was so important the citizens paid extra tax for city schools. The end of World War II brought peace time production of everything. College and an education career as well as marriage led to the birth of a son and a move to Florida. More education in North Carolina and a return to Florida for the son's education was interspersed with a new marriage. Following traveling and house building in North Carolina came death and a move back to Florida to be near her successful son and twin grandsons. Her senior years of reading, writing and golf stopped due to illness. Recovery from illness and pursuit of academic endeavors concludes the book.

What makes the book so sympathetic is Cohen’s lack of self-pity and the straightforward tone. . . . [A] superb chronicle.”—People The Family on Beartown Road is Elizabeth Cohen’s true and moving portrait of love and courage. Elizabeth, a member of the “sandwich generation”—those caught in the middle, simultaneously caring for their children and for their aging parents—is the mother of baby Ava and the daughter of Daddy, and responsible for both. Elizabeth, a suddenly single mother with a career and a mortgage and a hamperful of laundry, finds her world spiraling out of control. Faced with mounting disasters, she chooses to confront life head-on, and to see the unique beauty in each and every moment. Imbued with an unquenchable spirit, The Family on Beartown Road takes us on a journey through the remarkable landscape that is family. Originally published as The House on Beartown Road

Book excerpt: The young woman watched me like a cat watches a rat he is going to catch for his dinner. As I walked up the stairs to let myself in the building she jumped in front of me. She pressed her face close to my ear. I could feel and smell her hot stinking breath as she whispered menacingly into my ear, "Open this goddamned door quick bitch. You better not scream or I will run this knife right through your side." I fumbled in my purse for my key. I tried to keep as still as possible because I could feel the knife pricking my skin every time I moved. I finally found the key and my hand was trembling so badly that I could barely turn the lock. "You better hurry up bitch if you don't want to die." Once I got the door opened the woman pushed me to the floor. She went straight to the cabinets and rambled through the vaccine bottles and other medicines that had been set aside for the research project. "You better not try anything." she yelled, while she rambled through the cabinets, She cursed and threw bottles on the floor as she pillaged through every cabinet in the office. She finally found what she was looking for. She headed towards the door, turned back, came to where I was lying on the floor, leaned close to me and yelled in my face, "You better not call the sheriff bitch, or I will come back, find you, and kill your fuckin ass."

Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize winner makes her debut for young readers. Abby Lovitt has been riding horses for as long as she can remember, but Daddy hasn't let her name a single one. He calls all their geldings George and their mares Jewel and warns her not to get attached. The horses are there on the ranch to be sold, plain and simple. But with all the stress at school (the Big Four—Linda, Mary A., Mary N., Joan—have turned against her) and home (nothing feels right with her brother, Danny, gone), Abby can't help but seek comfort in the Georges and the Jewels, who greet her every day with soft nickers. Except for one: the horse who won't meet her gaze, the horse who bucks her off, the horse Daddy insists she ride and train. Abby knows not to cross her father, but she knows, too, that she can't get back on Ornery George. And suddenly the horses seem like no refuge at all. From Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley comes an emotionally charged and action-filled novel for young readers, set in the vibrant landscape of 1960s California horse country.
Book Synopsis A Place to Dance by : Anthony Tovatt
Download or read book A Place to Dance written by Anthony Tovatt and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cuchat family of Dave, his wife, Martha, and children Robert (Bub) and Faye faced a direct threat from the local klan when a contingent of sheeted and hooded figures marched in military fashion and lined up on the road in front of the Cuchat's dance pavilion and little house. The leader made two charges: 1) David Cuchat operated an evil business, a dance pavilion, that threatened the morals of 100 percent Americans; 2) David Cuchat was a Catholic and thus was loyal to the Pope at Rome, not to the government of the United States. Told to leave with his family in one week or suffer the consequences, Dave declared to the klan his right as a U.S. citizen to operate a legal business and to attend a church of choice. To demonstrate how he would protect his family and his business, he blasted a series of clay pigeons out of the air with deadly accuracy. The klan left quickly. During the anxiety-filled summer, in which Dave's alcoholism added to the tension, his friends strove to help him short-circuit klan activities. In September, however, the family's constant fears were realized and they were plunged into numbing despair - a despair, though, that quickly turned to hope when their neighbors offered the Cuchat family a chance to build a new and larger place to dance and possibly other attractions on the shores of Lake Buffalo. Thirteen-year-old Bub tells the story.
