Book excerpt: Ice and Fire is a collection of nonfiction narratives from award-winning writer Stephen Osborne, who retains an abiding sense that the places and the people he encounters are still to be discovered. Negotiating the Trans-Canada Highway near Moncton during a whiteout, visiting Timothy Eaton's grave in Toronto, leaving offerings of tobacco at a Nez Perce battleground, drinking with his Japanese mentor in a revolving bar in Vancouver while debating Buddhism vs. class struggle--for Osborne, all of these are occasions to conjure our time and our place. Ice and fire are extremes of a Canadian North, from which several of these dispatches are written. But Osborne's special insight is that Kamloops, New Glasgow and even Toronto are as unknowable as Pangnirtung. We live in a country that can claim the world's only souvenir police force, and whose analogue is a department store; a country that believes itself to be part of a New World, even though people have lived here for ten thousand years. Smart, funny, moving, and full of wonder and surprise, the dispatches in Ice and Fire illuminate a very old world striving to make itself new.

If Meela and Lysi can't stop him, Adaro will use the deadly serpent to rid the oceans of mankind. With the American military using catastrophic weapons of their own to retaliate, Meela and Lysi must make peace between humans and merpeople before one race destroys the other. The journey will risk their lives and put their relationship to the test-but the vengeance that has been consuming Meela's thoughts, day and night, might prove even more dangerous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is about Induma: There are many creatures on this planet that is much like earth, it was ''made'' according to their belief by Evangeline-the ''Angel'' of redemption. Moriane was born on Evangeline's star but was banished for her bloodthirsty nature-Tarn the Demon of the underworld is much like we would see Hades but a little different-he has compassion. Anyway Induma has one sun (the Great Star) and two moons (the Arrents') the normal Stars they call 'Tears of the Angel' or simply 'Orbs of light, Sparks from the Life-bringer' (the sun). At night in the summer, sometimes (but only if there are no Arrents, the Plants' flowers will glow, sand, patterns on certain animals and such will shine-its kind of like camouflage) Induma is 'Destined' to fall right before the angel is healed and returns home. What survives her wrath and retribution will be lead by her healer in the second book. the healer is Arikka the daughter of Elysiums' king Matyus and Tartaroos' queen Lyndsey, but the child is ''illegitimate'' and her mom tried to kill her-later Jaysen adopts herKFor more read the book. This one is about Jaysen: He has cobalt blue eyes that are shot through with slightly tarnished silver. He is a knight and message bearer to both kingdoms-his heart belongs to his wife Marria pronounced Mariah, he is about 5'7'' and weighs roughly...135lbs. He has a generous mouth, chiseled features and usually has a 5 o'clock shadow. He is loyal to Tararoo and King Rodryc, he despises Elysium and King Matyus, has pity on Queen Shyloe and kills Queen Lyndsey. He adopts children and helps many others, but he usually does not keep the children he finds. His parents died of some illness when he was young and he was raised by the Klyne so he is a little detached and has a raw undertone. He doesnt really like the ''Angel'' Moriane but loves ''Her Consort'' Tarn. Jaysens' true name is Mitah while the name most know him as is Knight Jaysen Night or simply 'Messenger'. The knight likes helping and his greatest fear is that he will not make a difference in the world he so loves. Jaysen is...loyal only to those he really loves. He is human to a fault he is a telepath and a self-healer, he also can heal others. His blood creates roses (colored by his emotions, thoughts, or whim) in the great-stars' (the suns) light, the light is also the only was he can heal himself or others. Occasionally he cannot heal himself, and usually will not heal others especially if he has been sick, injured recently or suspects himself of being poisoned because his blood transfers the poison or illness. Not only that but it also hurts. Jaysen can kill without feeling until he is by himself or trying to sleep. The Pulkan (vampires, lycans, ect as well as gifted humans ect..) have a special interest in him because he is supposed to raise a child who is too heal Moriane (the angel) and send her back to her domain with Tarn, returning a different creature to look after the remaints of the inhabitants of Induma. (I hope you fall in love with him, I did..)

Book excerpt: This time, we have a pair of original mysteries—tales by Steve Liskow (courtesy of Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken) and M.A. Blume, plus a terrific tale by Steve Hockensmith (which typography nuts like me will enjoy, courtesy of Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman). The mystery novel is by Avery Gaul, and of course we have a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles. On the science fiction side, we have a novel by Golden Age author Arthur Leo Zagat, an early—and quite silly—fantasy from Harlan Ellison, space opera from Edmond Hamilton, and straight-up SF tales from John Victor Peterson and Manly Bannister. Lots of fun. Here’s the lineup: Cover: Ron Miller Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure: “The Grifted Age” by Steve Liskow [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “Deadly Reunion” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery] “i” by Steve Hockensmith [Barb Goffman Presents short story] “Pretty Is As Pretty Does,” by M.A. Blume [short story] Five Nights at the Five Pines, by Avery Gaul [novel] Science Fiction & Fantasy: “Classified Object,” by John Victor Peterson [short story] “The Annals of Aardvark,” by Harlan Ellison [short story] “The Great Illusion,” by Manly Bannister [short story] “The Star-Stealers,” by Edmond Hamilton [short story] The Two Moons of Tranquillia, by Arthur Leo Zagat [novel]

Book excerpt: “Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.

Book excerpt: Noting a marked lack of comprehensiveness and/or contemporaneity among typical reference works on chemical etymology, as well as a somewhat spotty coverage of chemical terms and their etymology in comprehensive dictionaries and textbooks the author decided to write an up-to-date desk reference on chemical etymology which would satisfy the needs of casual readers as well as those of more demanding users of etymological lore. Characteristic user-friendly features of the present work include avoidance of cumbersome abbreviations, avoidance of entries in foreign alphabets, and a broad coverage of all chemical disciplines including mineralogy. Biological, medical, geological, physical and mathematical terms are only considered where they appear of interest to mainstream chemists. This book does not provide definitions of terms (unless required in the etymological context) nor guidance as to the timeliness of different nomenclature systems. The typical user will from the outset be well aware of the exact meaning of the terms he or she focuses on and only require the etymological background to be used. Examples of sources which have been drawn upon in the preparation of this book, apart from the extremely useful Internet resource Google, are listed, but an exhausting enumeration would be tiresome and impractical.. * an up-to-date desk reference on chemical etymology * characteristic user-friendly features * broad coverage of all chemical disciplines
