Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen in England Since Ibsen has in uenced modern English drama as has no other single playwright, and since Ibsen aroused the most interesting controversy in the history of the modern English theatre, it is essential that the student of con temporary English drama should thoroughly understand the part that Ibsen played in the literary and theatrical England of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This thesis is the result of an attempt to gather together in a single volume the material necessary to an apprecia tion of Ibsen's place in the history of English drama. For much of the material on Gosse's introduction of Ibsen to England, I am indebted to F. C. Hansen's bac calaureate thesis on Ibsen in England, University of Wisconsin. In Dr. Lee M. Hollander's bibliography in Speeches and New Letters of Ibsen, there may be found a list of many of the translations, performances, and commentaries on Ibsen in England and America. As far as I have been able to ascertain, these have been the only detailed works on the subject of Ibsen in Eng land, and both Mr. Hansen and Dr. Hollander have limited themselves to only a portion of the field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen In these pages, where the space at my disposal was so small, I have not been willing to waste it by repeating the plots of any of those plays of Ibsen which are open to the English reader. It would please me best if this book might be read in connection with the final edition of Ibsen's Complete Dramatic Works, now being prepared by Mr. Archer. If we may judge of the whole work by those volumes of it which have already appeared, I have little hesitation in saying that no other foreign author of the second half of the nineteenth century has been so ably and exhaustively edited in English as Ibsen has been in this instance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen on His Merits The "excuse" for this volume is partly to be found in the recently revived interest of English people in the vogue of Ibsen; and partly in the fact that, with the exception of Mr. Bernard Shaw, practically no one in this country has had courage or encouragement sufficient to issue in permanent form any lengthy appreciation or criticism of Dr. Ibsen's works. A portion of Sir Edward Russell's contribution was originally delivered in the form of a public lecture, but is now carefully revised and brought up to date. Book excerpt: At first glance, Nora Helmer appears to live the perfect life. She is married to the ambitious banker Torvald and is well provided for. But when she is blackmailed by one of her husband's colleagues, she is forced to re-examine her life along with her role as a frivolous, scatter-brained wife. First published in 1879, A Doll's House scandalized contemporary audiences and rewrote the rules of drama. It challenged notions of women's place in society and questioned every aspect of what constituted good conduct in domestic life. Ibsen's masterpiece was the first serious play to focus on ordinary people in everyday situations rather than on the lives of the upper classes. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Arcturus Classics series brings together high-quality paperback editions of classics works, presented with contemporary graphic cover designs. Together they make a wonderful collection which is perfect for any home library.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen and the Drama But there are many who represent themselves as feeling no desire to discover whether the claims put forward on behalf of Ibsen are justifiable or not, and pretend that such questions do not possess the slightest interest for them. They affect to regard the whole matter as outside their province, and as one too common and profane for them to touch, and treat the supporters of either side with the superb indifference of the Grand Turk, when, according to Ibsen's own account, he said of the Emperor of Austria and the King of France, I don't care whether the pig eats the dog, or the dog the pig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henrik Ibsen: A Bibliography of Criticism and Biography; With an Index to Characters The following bibliography has been compiled to meet a general rather than a scholarly need. It is for this reason that the subject index has been expanded beyond the limits required by the Ibsen specialist. While it is hoped that the bibliography will not be despised by the expert, it has been the convenience of the library assistant, the college student and the ubiquitous club Woman that the compiler has had in mind throughout its preparation. No attempt has been made to compile a complete list of Ibsen's writings. The work of Dr. J. B. Halvorsen has rendered that service unnecessary. Therefore a brief list of the best Norwegian and English editions is all that has been included. The attempt has been made to provide a list of the best available critical and biographical material relat ing to Henrik Ibsen, and to present it in such a form as will meet satisfactorily the constant demand for information about special phases of the great dramatist's work. The bibliography has been compiled through examina tion of the books in local collections, in the Library of Con gress, in Columbia University Library, and in the New York Public Library. The American, English, French, Italian, German and Scandinavian national bibliographies, the gen eral and special indexes to periodicals and all available refer ence lists have been consulted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love's Comedy Love's Comedy is without doubt the finest of the few plays of Ibsen which still remain inaccessible to the English reader. It belongs, like Brand and Peer Gynt, to the early noontide of his genius, and exhibits in a cruder form, that union of philosophic reflection with the happy valiancy and abounding resource of youth, which is the special grace of the early thirties. To the reader of the Social Dramas, and especially to the reader who has enjoyed their subject-matter but resented their studied banality of form, Love's Comedy should be highly congenial; for it handles a kindred theme with radiant vivacity and verve, and presents, through a medium charged with eloquence and imagery, a picture not less dramatic and alive, of the same society. Ibsen had here, in fact, struck for the first time the rich vein which the last thirty years of his life have been devoted to working out; and he hewed it with ringing strokes in the first ardour of discovery. Love's Comedy marks the true inception of the Social Dramas it may even be held to contain them in the germ.
