Book Synopsis Islamic Historiography by : Chase F. Robinson
Download or read book Islamic Historiography written by Chase F. Robinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Muslims of the classical Islamic period understand their past? What value did they attach to history? How did they write history? How did historiography fare relative to other kinds of Arabic literature? These and other questions are answered in Chase F. Robinson's Islamic Historiography, an introduction to the principal genres, issues, and problems of Islamic historical writing in Arabic, that stresses the social and political functions of historical writing in the Islamic world. Beginning with the origins of the tradition in the eighth and ninth centuries and covering its development until the beginning of the sixteenth century, this is an authoritative and yet accessible guide through a complex and forbidding field, which is intended for readers with little or no background in Islamic history or Arabic.
Book Synopsis Maimonides in His World by : Sarah Stroumsa
Download or read book Maimonides in His World written by Sarah Stroumsa and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the great medieval philosopher, theologian, and physician Maimonides is acknowledged as a leading Jewish thinker, his intellectual contacts with his surrounding world are often described as related primarily to Islamic philosophy. Maimonides in His World challenges this view by revealing him to have wholeheartedly lived, breathed, and espoused the rich Mediterranean culture of his time. Sarah Stroumsa argues that Maimonides is most accurately viewed as a Mediterranean thinker who consistently interpreted his own Jewish tradition in contemporary multicultural terms. Maimonides spent his entire life in the Mediterranean region, and the religious and philosophical traditions that fed his thought were those of the wider world in which he lived. Stroumsa demonstrates that he was deeply influenced not only by Islamic philosophy but by Islamic culture as a whole, evidence of which she finds in his philosophy as well as his correspondence and legal and scientific writings. She begins with a concise biography of Maimonides, then carefully examines key aspects of his thought, including his approach to religion and the complex world of theology and religious ideas he encountered among Jews, Christians, Muslims, and even heretics; his views about science; the immense and unacknowledged impact of the Almohads on his thought; and his vision of human perfection. This insightful cultural biography restores Maimonides to his rightful place among medieval philosophers and affirms his central relevance to the study of medieval Islam.

Book Synopsis Education and Learning in the Early Islamic World by : Claude Gilliot
Download or read book Education and Learning in the Early Islamic World written by Claude Gilliot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying education and learning in the formative period of Islam is not immediately easy, since the sources for this are relatively late and frequently project backwards to the earlier period the assumptions and conditions of their own day. The studies in this volume have been selected for the critical approaches and methods of their authors, and are arranged under five headings: the pedagogical tradition; scholarship and attestation; orality and literacy; authorship and transmission; and libraries. Together with the editor’s introductory essay, they present a broad picture of the beginnings and evolution of education and learning in the Islamic world.

Book Synopsis Travellers of the World Revolution by : Brigitte Studer
Download or read book Travellers of the World Revolution written by Brigitte Studer and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope, Struggle and Defeat: The Communist International and the Global Fight for Freedom The Communist International was the first organised attempt to bring about worldwide revolution and left a lasting mark on 20th-century history. The book offers a new and fascinating account of this transnational organisation founded in 1919 by Lenin and Trotsky and dissolved by Stalin in 1943, telling the story through the eyes of the activists who became its “professional revolutionaries.” Studer follows such figures as Willi Münzenberg, Mikhail Borodin, M.N. Roy and Evelyn Trent, Tina Modotti, Agnes Smedley and many others less well-known as they are despatched to the successive political hotspots of the 1920s and ’30s, from revolutionary Berlin to Baku, from Shanghai to Spain, from Nazi Germany to Stalin’s Moscow. It traces their journeys from revolutionary hope to accommodation, defeat or death, looking at questions of motivation and commitment, agency and negotiation, of life and love, conflict and frustration. In doing so, it reveals a forgotten Comintern, the expression of a multi-dimensional revolutionary moment, which attracted not only working-class but feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial and anti-imperialist activists, highlighting the role of women in the Comintern and the centrality of anti-colonialism to the Communist project. The book concludes with a reflection on the ultimate demise of a historically unique undertaking.
Book Synopsis Kitab Zahr Al-mantur and Min Tarassul Ibn Nubatah by : Andreas Herdt
Download or read book Kitab Zahr Al-mantur and Min Tarassul Ibn Nubatah written by Andreas Herdt and published by Ergon. This book was released on 2020 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Yemen written by Paul Auchterlonie and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yemen is both the least-known state in the Arabian Peninsula, and the one with the longest continuous history. Several vibrant civilizations flourished in South Arabia in the millennium before the arrival of Islam in 632 AD, and under the Rasulid dynasty (1229-1454), there developed an intellectual, commercial and artistic culture of considerable splendour. The country was occupied at various times by the Portuguese, the Ottomans and the British. When independence came in the 1960s, two separate states emerged; the Yemen Arab Republic in the North, and the (Marxist) People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in the South. Union was achieved in 1990, and despite the civil war of 1994, the wealth generated by the recent discovery of oil and the democratic elections of 1997 promise the new Republic of Yemen a positive future. This edition has been thoroughly revised to take account of recent scholarship.
