Book excerpt: The fifteen essays in I Will Be Sanctified: Religious Responses to the Holocaust serve as an introduction to the manner in which religious Jews attempt to contend with the Holocaust, and how Jewish thought grapples with the issues raised. Translated from Hebrew, all of the selections in this collection--with the exception of an introductory essay by Rabbi Sha'ar Yashuv Cohen, the Chief Rabbi of Haifa--were written by students who combine traditional talmudic studies with service in the Israel Defense Forces. The essays are intended for those who seek to gain a basic understanding of the Holocaust as it is addressed by traditional Judaism, as well as for those who already have a firm knowledge of the sources and halakhic issues under discussion. Much attention is focused on the concept of Kiddush Hashem (martyrdom on account of faith). In a 1994 speech, Rabbi Israel Lau, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, stated that the writing of books about the Holocaust is of increased importance and urgency in the present generation, which has seen the rise of revisionist historians'even while there are still people walking around with numbers tattooed in their arms. He said, "the very remembrance of the Holocaust is an actual commandment." It is hoped that this volume will serve as a path of remembrance and a way of honoring the memory of the victims in addition to offering insight into traditional halakhic principles as they are applied to unprecedented situations, all of which were matters of life and death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many popular views try to reduce the process of Christian growth to a single template: Remember past grace. Rehearse your identity in Christ. Avail yourself of the means of grace. Discipline yourself. But Scripture portrays the dynamics of sanctification in a rich variety of ways. No single factor, truth, or protocol can capture why and how a person is changed into the image of Christ. Weaving together personal stories, biblical exposition, and theological reflection, David Powlison shows the personal and particular ways that God meets you where you are to produce change. He highlights the variety of factors that work together, helping us to avoid sweeping generalizations and pat answers in the search for a key to sanctification. This book is a go-to resource for understanding the multifaceted, lifelong, personal journey of sanctification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books on the Christian life abound. Some focus on spirituality, others on practices, and others still on doctrines such as justification or forgiveness. Few offer an account of the Christian life that portrays redeemed Christian existence within the multifaceted and beautiful whole of the Christian confession. This book attempts to fill that gap. It provides a constructive, specifically theological interpretation of the Christian life according to the nature of God's grace. This means coordinating the Triune God, his reconciling, justifying, redemptive, restorative, and otherwise transformative action with those practices of the Christian life emerging from it. The doctrine of the Christian life developed here unifies doctrine and life, confession and practice within the divine economy of grace. Drawing together some of the most important theologians in the church today, Sanctified by Grace achieves what no other theological text offers – a shared work of dogmatic theology oriented to redeemed Christian existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical counselor Colin R. McCulloch retrieves John Owen’s theology of Trinitarian sanctification to address modern concerns in counseling methodology. McCulloch examines two divergent approaches to sanctification within the biblical counseling movement, suggesting that Owen’s emphasis on Spirit-infused habitual grace provides a more holistic vision for soul care. Far from a mere historical study, McCulloch’s incisive analysis will help pastors and laymen alike minister to sinners and sufferers in Christ’s church.

If you have ever wanted to be holy or to know what holiness is then this is a must read. In the past, God was ready to send His presence to change circumstances and empower missionaries to do harsh work on the frontline. This can happen again and for some Christians is happening now. What do you do when all your efforts in the Lord amount to trouble, despair, and the guilt of sins still committed? Sonia Okwum will show you in a humorous but serious way how to give 100 percent and get back 110 percent. God first is a term rarely used today. Analogies in the book will show you how and when.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this seminal work charts the unlikely theological quest for Christian holiness by founder Charles Harrison Mason and the Wesleyan-Holiness Pentecostal tradition known as the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States. Through fresh research and critical analysis, this book challenges existing assumptions by scholars and reveals how little-known black renewal movements informed Mason's theological understanding and that of the movement. The rich theological resources of this historically marginalized movement are not primarily accessible in academic journals, position papers, or theological treatises. Instead, these resources function as "lived religion," where the theological presuppositions are embedded in primitive worship, ecstatic religious practices, and countercultural distinctives. By unpacking the "lived religion" of this self-professed sanctified church, this book explores how sanctification and the practice of Christian holiness shaped and empowered the COGIC, its people, and its practices in creative and profound ways--resulting in a radical holiness ethic that emerged from an inexhaustible exilic vitality with personal, social, and political implications. Given the challenge of Christian nationalism today, this book provides a framework that informs Christian identity and faithful living for the broader Christian community.

Book excerpt: How does the doctrine of sanctification shape the Christian life? Offering a fully developed treatment of "accomplished" sanctification, Don Payne explains that the primary biblical focus in sanctification is not progressive growth but that which has already occurred for Christians to make growth possible, necessary, and grace-driven. As Payne explores the significance Scripture attributes to the accomplished aspect of sanctification, he helps us understand that we are already sanctified. Sanctification is not synonymous with transformation but undergirds strategies and resources related to Christian discipleship and formation.

Book excerpt: Wholly Sanctified was first published in 1890. A.B. Simpson preached these sermons then printed these shortly thereafter. As A. B. Simpson hoped the people would quickly endear themselves to the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. Simpson desired to see his congregations to follow full Godhead including the Holy Spirit and search and seek the full indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the sanctifying process within their lives. Based on the hope of true holiness. The chapters of this book are broken down into: Wholly Sanctified Sanctified Spirit A Sanctified Soul A Sanctified Body Preserved Blameless Even as He Legacy in Verse A.B. Simpson stated, "I prayed a long time to get sanctified, sometimes, I thought I had it. On one occasion I felt something, and I held on with a desperate grip for fear it would go, and, of course, it went with the next sensation and the next mood. I lost it because I did not hold onto Him."
