Book excerpt: Best-selling author Louise L. Hay has spent her life teaching people that their thoughts create their lives, and she has written numerous books for adults that have helped them discover their own self-worth. Similarly, Louise has always believed that if children could learn the power of their thoughts early on, their journey through life would be happier and more rewarding, with fewer struggles along the way. In this new book, Louise teaches boys and girls about the importance of affirmations—the thoughts and words we use in our daily lives that express what we believe to be true. Within these pages, there are wonderful examples of kids turning "negative" thoughts such as worry, anger, and fear into positive words and actions that express joy, happiness, and love. There are also tips that show children how they can apply affirmations to their daily lives. Vibrant illustrations and simple text make these concepts easy to understand for even the youngest child. Parents and children will have so much fun learning about the power of positive affirmations and what a difference they can make!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society is in the throes of a fundamental change with the ubiquitous presence of mobile phones. The exchange of ideas and opinions occurs instantaneously and across the globe, representing the apex of our achievement as a species, founded as it is on our ability to communicate and coordinate. Building on learned experiences, we disseminate, refine, and spawn innovative ideas. The pace at which we extrapolate concepts results in an explosive expansion of knowledge and supporting data. Social media as a technology is barely twenty-five years old, hinting at undreamed-of potential as it matures in the future. In parallel, harnessing our newfound communication tools, science continues its relentless march in exploring our place in the universe at the macro and micro levels. Unimagined possibilities lie before us such that it is folly to discard what currently seems unlikely. This forms the basis of the fiction in this book. In barely a century, DNA has traced how people migrated out of Africa to inhabit every corner of the world. Forensic science has also used this foundational building block of life to bring to justice so many crimes. It is entirely feasible that undiscovered technologies lie on the near horizon. What happens when communication, the cornerstone of our success, goes beyond the social media frenzy that is already pervasive?

Book excerpt: In this sweeping second chance romance from debut author Myah Ariel, the unexpected spark of two former flames may force them to choose between their dreams and each other. Kaliya Wilson has paid her dues. But all the years behind the reception desk at a flashy film studio have only pushed her movie-making dreams further out of reach. That is, until a surprise reunion presents an opportunity that could make her career, or break her heart…a second time. It’s been seven years since Kaliya’s whirlwind college romance with Danny Prescott went up in flames. While her passions have stalled, his career is taking off. So when the hot shot director reappears to offer her a job on his next production, it’s a shock to the system. Working with Danny may recapture the intensity of their film school days, but trusting him again won’t come as easily. As the pair allows themselves the openness and vulnerability to entrust their deepest truths to each other, the possibility of a true connection draws ever closer. But when Hollywood politics and scandal threaten to sink the production and her career, Kaliya may have to risk everything to do what’s right—even if it means letting go of the second chance love of a lifetime.

Book excerpt: Emotional breakdowns are never easy. With only one semester standing between her and her diploma, Sloan Kyler lost almost everything-her friends, her health, her home, her future, her family, her mind, and her will to live. After bouncing from one mandatory hospital stay to another, searching for the right doctor to listen and the right medicine to keep her lucid, she did the only thing she still could: writing. This collection of poems (purposely ordered non-chronologically) detail a struggle to cope with mental illness, loss, and loneliness, and ultimately how to move forward and begin to heal-and reminds us all that healing isn't always a linear process.

Book excerpt: In this “thought-provoking blend of history, biography, women’s studies, and travelogue” (Library Journal) Mia Kankimäki recounts her enchanting travels in Japan, Kenya, and Italy while retracing the steps of ten remarkable female pioneers from history. What can a forty-something childless woman do? Bored with her life and feeling stuck, Mia Kankimäki leaves her job, sells her apartment, and decides to travel the world, following the paths of the female explorers and artists from history who have long inspired her. She flies to Tanzania and then to Kenya to see where Karen Blixen—of Out of Africa fame—lived in the 1920s. In Japan, Mia attempts to cure her depression while researching Yayoi Kusama, the contemporary artist who has voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital for decades. In Italy, Mia spends her days looking for the works of forgotten Renaissance women painters of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and finally finds her heroines in the portraits of Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, and Atremisia Gentileschi. If these women could make it in the world hundreds of years ago, why can’t Mia? The Women I Think About at Night is “an astute, entertaining…[and] insightful” (Publishers Weekly) exploration of the lost women adventurers of history who defied expectations in order to see—and change—the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Homan Potterton was appointed Director of the National Gallery of Ireland in 1979 at the age of thirty-three, he was the youngest ever Director since the foundation of the Gallery in 1854. Who Do I Think I Am? is the sequel to the author’s best-selling childhood memoir Rathcormick: A Childhood Recalled. Written in a witty and amusing style, Homan Potterton regales the reader with tales of student days at Trinity, Dublin, summer jobs in London, carefree travel in Europe, and his unexpected journey to the director’s office of the National Gallery of Ireland, after his first museum job in the National Gallery, London. With a keen interest in people, an observant eye and a spry humour, Potterton describes the many characters and leading lights of Dublin and London society that he encountered during his rich and varied career, including Anthony Blunt, Michael Levey, Denis Mahon, Derek Hill, James White, Desmond Guinness and Charles Haughey. Befriending Sir Alfred and Clementine Beit, he helped secure the famous Beit Collection for the Irish nation, and, in a dramatic episode, describes how he worked with Gardaí to recover the Beit paintings stolen from Russborough House by Martin Cahill in 1986. In a shock resignation, Potterton left the National Gallery of Ireland after only eight years. Thirty years on, Who Do I Think I Am? is his charming and candid memoir; a beautifully rendered, acutely descriptive impression of the art worlds of Dublin and London in the years 1970–1990.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In third grade I started hearing voices, seeing people chasing me, feeling paranoid, confused, and delusional. I can’t remember before third grade, but it is likely that I have had schizoaffective disorder all my life. I was afraid to tell anyone about my issues because I was afraid that the voices would kill me. There were two main voices: the blue and the red. They sometimes just mimicked me, or made me feel guilty about being bad, but they were the most dangerous when they commanded me to kill other people or myself. I found refuge from the voices by cutting myself to see the blood. This is a habit that has been almost impossible for me to stop. In the seventh grade I threatened my friends and teachers by writing anonymous threat notes. I eventually got caught and I was sent to a psychiatrist by the school. This was my first trip to a psychiatrist and I was eleven years old. I hated it. I cursed at her and wouldn’t cooperate. I never went back. When I was twelve my family moved to Seattle, Washington. I thought I would be able to start over with my life and escape all my pain. Unfortunately, the voices and fears followed me. I was in eighth grade and I started hanging with a bad crowd. I used drugs and had sex. The voices were telling me I was a bad person, so I acted like a bad person. I almost got kicked out of school. I hit rock bottom on December 5, 1997. I attempted suicide. No one had any idea how much pain I was in and this really surprised them. My parents went into shock. My school counselor who had been helping had no idea that I was so severely ill. I told the doctors about the voices and the visions, but I couldn’t admit to being paranoid because I was so sure that my delusions were real. The doctors tried to help me, but nothing helped. I was in the hospital for most of my senior year of high school. Finally I turned eighteen and I was sent to the adult medical center instead of the children’s hospital and I was told that I would never be able to graduate college or live on my own. This did not stop me though, it inspired me. My family found a hospital for me in Massachusetts and I moved to Boston into an Adolescent Residential Treatment Center where I got to see a specialist in child psychotic disorders. She found a medicine that my doctors in Seattle had not thought of trying and it was like a miracle drug. Soon I was out of the hospital and I was back in school, part-time at Brandeis University. My whole family moved to Weston, MA and my little brother started high school there. My older brother went to college in Western MA. Although I was happy to be back in school, I was having a lot of side effects from the medications and I had a hard time concentrating. Brandeis did not have a lot of experience dealing with people with mental illness, or at least I don’t think they did because I felt very alone there. At Brandeis I was majoring in creative writing. After two years I transferred to Simmons College and I am a nursing major. I can’t wait to get my R.N. and help patients. My family is moving into Boston soon. My life is going great. I have had a lot of physical setbacks—heart problems, diabetes, seizures, hypothyroid, congenital adrenal hyperoplasia, stomach issues, and most recently gallstones. Still, my schizoaffective disorder has been the hardest thing to manage. I hope this book will help some families that are dealing with mental illness. It shows that kids can make it through psychosis. It also helps families understand what psychosis is really like.

Book excerpt: "Every bit as smart, sensitive, funny, and genuine as her phenomenally popular novels,"* a dazzling collection from the New York Times bestselling author of Prep, American Wife, and Eligible "I really loved all the characters in this book. They're so complex and interesting, and in every story, you'll find them going through these pivotal moments in their lives."--Reese Witherspoon (Reese's Book Club x Hello Sunshine Book Pick) NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PEOPLE AND USA TODAY AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post - NPR - Financial Times - San Francisco Chronicle - New York Public Library - Refinery29 A suburban mother of two fantasizes about the downfall of an old friend whose wholesome lifestyle empire may or may not be built on a lie. A high-powered lawyer honeymooning with her husband is caught off guard by the appearance of the girl who tormented her in high school. A shy Ivy League student learns the truth about a classmate's seemingly enviable life. Curtis Sittenfeld has established a reputation as a sharp chronicler of the modern age who humanizes her subjects even as she skewers them. Now, with this first collection of short fiction, her "astonishing gift for creating characters that take up residence in readers' heads" (The Washington Post) is showcased like never before. Throughout the ten stories in You Think It, I'll Say It, Sittenfeld upends assumptions about class, relationships, and gender roles in a nation that feels both adrift and viscerally divided. With moving insight and uncanny precision, Curtis Sittenfeld pinpoints the questionable decisions, missed connections, and sometimes extraordinary coincidences that make up a life. Indeed, she writes what we're all thinking--if only we could express it with the wit of a master satirist, the storytelling gifts of an old-fashioned raconteur, and the vision of an American original. *Booklist (starred review) LONGLISTED FOR THE CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE IN FICTION "At once psychologically acute, deftly crafted and deeply pleasurable."--San Francisco Chronicle "Witty and buoyant . . . Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal bestseller, now in paperback. Poker champion turned decision strategist Annie Duke teaches you how to get comfortable with uncertainty and make better decisions. Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time. There's always an element of luck that you can't control, and there's always information hidden from view. So the key to long-term success (and avoiding worrying yourself to death) is to think in bets: How sure am I? What are the possible ways things could turn out? What decision has the highest odds of success? Did I land in the unlucky 10% on the strategy that works 90% of the time? Or is my success attributable to dumb luck rather than great decision making? Annie Duke, a former World Series of Poker champion turned consultant, draws on examples from business, sports, politics, and (of course) poker to share tools anyone can use to embrace uncertainty and make better decisions. For most people, it's difficult to say "I'm not sure" in a world that values and, even, rewards the appearance of certainty. But professional poker players are comfortable with the fact that great decisions don't always lead to great outcomes, and bad decisions don't always lead to bad outcomes. By shifting your thinking from a need for certainty to a goal of accurately assessing what you know and what you don't, you'll be less vulnerable to reactive emotions, knee-jerk biases, and destructive habits in your decision making. You'll become more confident, calm, compassionate, and successful in the long run.

People sitting together in pews every Sunday feel like strangers and loved ones at the dinner table feel like enemies. Toxic political dialogue, hate-filled rants on social media, and agenda-driven news stories have become the new norm. But it doesn't have to be this way. Instead, we can bring the same care and respect to policy discussions that we bring to the rest of our lives. Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers, co-hosts of Pantsuit Politics, recently named an Apple Podcasts Show of the Year, give you all of the tools you need to: Respect the dignity of every person Recognize that issues are nuanced and can't be reduced to political talking points Listen in order to understand Lead with grace and patience Join Sarah from the left and Beth from the right as they teach you that people from opposing political perspectives truly can have calm, grace-filled conversations with one another. Praise for I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): "Sarah and Beth are an absolute gift to our culture right now. Book excerpt: Martha Welch felt lost. The wagon train left her and her uncle behind when he became too ill to travel. He'd passed on just hours after they left. She was fighting tears when Wyatt Peterson, a local ranch owner, came across her on his way to Green Falls. He drove her wagon into town, where she planned to get a hotel room for a few days. The hotel was full, though. The sheriff suggested Wyatt take her to his ranch, where he had plenty of room and his housekeeper could help her adjust and make some plans. They began having feelings for each other, even though they each tried to convince themselves it was the wrong time to get involved. Wyatt was sure he didn't have time to keep a lady from New York City safe on a farm in Kansas. Regardless of how determined they were, they soon found out things don't always go as planned. In fact, since they'd met, it seemed very little was even as it seemed, let alone going as planned.
