Book excerpt: Two baby girls seating in the rear of a car are involved in a terrible accident and their mother dies. An alien spacecraft hovering in the storm above witnesses the event and teleports the girls from the burning car. The girls are taken to the alien's home world on the other side of the galaxy. On arrival, they are separated and never told they were saved from a burning vehicle on a planet on the other side of the galaxy. Twenty-six years later, they are headed to Earth on opposite sides of good and evil. However, they are not aware they are sisters, let alone earthlings. The younger sister is an agent for the alien, Captain Arantose, who wants to either conquer or destroy the Earth for its precious raw materials. The other sister's mission is to either protect Earth or let it be destroyed. The eyes of Earth can't see every inch of space and spot an intruder, with either good or bad intentions, which could sneak through and take over or destroy Earth. When these aliens arrive, can Earth survive? Will the leaders of Earth be able to negotiate and save its inhabitants? Will its inhabitants be ready to sacrifice everything or die?

Book excerpt: At the end of 1997, my wife Beverly and myself moved into Del Webb's first Northern California retirement community, Sun City Roseville, just outside of Sacramento. About two years later I was interviewed by someone from the Sun Senior News, a paper mailed to Sun City residents at the start of each month, because I'd started a New Yorkers club. When the interviewer found out I was a freelance writer for the Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee she suggested I write something for the Sun Senior News. I wrote a piece called "Observations after Two Years in Sun City," which was printed, then a few more "Observations," then it became a monthly feature and is still going on. This book is a collection of ten years of "Observations," from 2000 through 2009. As I put it together, I saw that I had gone from columns that were mainly about Sun City to columns on what was going on in the outside world. "Observations' allowed me to express my opinions on a number of matters. I enjoyed doing them, and hope readers will enjoy reading them. Martin Green is a retiree/free-lance writer living in Roseville, California. Starting in 1991, he started writing articles and for a time was a columnist for a weekly alternative newspaper in Sacramento, the Suttertown News. In the same year, he began free-lancing for the Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee, contributing over 100 articles until Neighbors was discontinued. Since 2000, he's been writing for a monthly newspaper, the Sun Senior News, which goes to over 10,000 households in two retirement communities, Sun City Roseville (where he lives) and Sun City Lincoln Hills. He contributes two features each month, one called "Observations" and the other called "Favorite Restaurants." In addition to his journalistic writing, Martin has had over 200 short stories published in online magazines, plus a few literary and "senior" publications. He has so far self-published three collections of these short stories (2006, 2007 and 2008) and has also self-published a longer work, "One Year in Retirement" (2009). Martin has been married to Beverly (a water-color artist) for 45 years, has three sons (David, Michael and Christopher), three grandsons (Logan, Mason and Morgan), one granddaughter (Stephanie) and two cats, (Bun-Bun and Shandyman).

Book excerpt: Following his hilarious introduction to Paris in French Like Moi, Midwesterner Scott Dominic Carpenter returns to the scene of the crime with more tales of intrigue. This time, though, the story starts with sorrow as Carpenter's wife struggles with dementia. Humor may be the best medicine, but even the antics of a vandal in their building can’t cement the tiles of her memory for long. Before he expects it, the author finds himself alone in a capital that is also blighted by the pandemic. It’s against this backdrop that the city comes roaring back to life. From bizarre encounters on the Metro to comical clashes with authority figures, and even a quixotic battle against a flock of migrant parrots, Paris Lost and Found unveils sides of the great city that are as quirky as they are authentic. With his unique blend of wit, insight, and wistfulness, Carpenter charts a path through his new labyrinth of solitude—only to emerge on the other side, squinting into the bright light of hope and new beginnings.

Book excerpt: From the author of When Audrey Met Alice comes a sweeping middle grade novel about a city girl forced to spend her summer in North Carolina, where she becomes involved in a centuries-old mystery, turning her once boring vacation into an adventure she never could have imagined. Nell Dare expected to spend her summer vacation hanging out with her friends in New York City. That is, until her botanist mom dragged her all the way to Roanoke Island for a research trip. To make matters worse, her father suddenly and mysteriously leaves town, leaving no explanation or clues as to where he went—or why. While Nell misses the city—and her dad—a ton, it doesn’t take long for her to become enthralled with the mysteries of Roanoke and its lost colony. And when Nell meets Ambrose, a quirky historical reenactor, they start exploring for clues as to what really happened to the lost colonists. As Nell and Ambrose’s discoveries of tantalizing evidence mount, mysterious things begin to happen. And someone—or something—is keeping watch over their quest for answers. It looks like Nell will get the adventurous summer she was hoping for, and she will discover secrets not only about Roanoke, but about herself.

In this journey we call life, there are always teachers and mentors who have gone before us and students who follow after us. Picturing this concept, I envision three people on a wooden bridge crossing a stream. The position of these three people shows the one in front, which would be the mentor, one in the middle, a student and also a mentor to the one following. In the broader picture each person has another in front and another behind capturing the idea we are always a mentor / teacher and always the student. My heart's desire with these stories is to both illustrate this principle and honor those who mentored me.

Further features are a substantial introduction to the travelogue and the writing of Italy, more than thirty illustrations visualizing the British experience of Italy, and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “By playing with notions of collecting and cataloging, this anthology offers a range of investigations into detritus and forgotten ephemera.”—Colin Dickey, coeditor of The Morbid Anatomy Anthology The modern age is no stranger to the cabinet of curiosities, the freak show, or a drawer full of odds and ends. These collections of oddities engagingly work against the rationality and order of the conventional archive found in a university, a corporation, or a governmental holding. In form, methodology, and content, The Year’s Work in the Oddball Archive offers a counterargument to a more reasoned form of storing and recording the avant-garde (or the post-avant-garde), the perverse, the off, the bent, the absurd, the quirky, the weird, and the queer. To do so, it positions itself within the history of mirabilia launched by curiosity cabinets starting in the mid-fifteenth century and continuing to the present day. These archives (or are they counter-archives?) are located in unexpected places—the doorways of Katrina homes, the cavity of a cow, the remnants of extinct animals, an Internet site—and they offer up “alternate modes of knowing” to the traditional archive. “An unruly―and much-needed―model for how to do the archive differently.”—Scott Herring, author of The Hoarders: Material Deviance in Modern American Culture “It was a pleasure to read through this collection, and I suspect some of the essays, if not the entire book, will find itself on the syllabus for my Archive and Ephemera graduate course.”—Museum Anthropology Review “A finely wrought collection of curiosities . . . A vital intervention into how we talk about the stuff that surrounds us.”—Colin Dickey, coeditor of The Morbid Anatomy Anthology

Book excerpt: First published in 1998, music scored for film has only relatively recently received the critical attention which it merits. Many composers in the twentieth century have written works for films or documentaries, a number feeling that this aspect of their output has been undervalued. This dictionary complements other studies which have appeared in recent years which look at the technical and theoretical issues concerned with film music composition. Arranged alphabetically by composer, the volume comprises over 500 entries covering all nationalities. Each entry includes very brief biographical information on the composer, followed by a list of the films (with dates) for which he or she has composed. Details of recordings are also given. The dictionary’s international coverage ensures that it will become a standard reference work for all those interested in the history of twentieth-century music and the development of film.

After graduation, working my way to nowhere, I got married, had children, and wanted desperately to lead a normal life. But I was living a lie. I had no idea what was happening to me. I felt like there were days I was losing my mind, but why? I wanted to be a good wife and mother, but my self-centeredness was shutting them out. It was my time all the time. That world became my life and my family was being left out. I was slowly slipping away, and my lifes ship was sinking fast. Then I found someone that loved me just the way I was and always forgave me; someone I needed my whole life and finally He was here. He changed my heart and my way of thinking. So as you read through each page, you may see your life mirroring mine, and you just might find what you are looking for!
